Is like Xcom where you just eat shit for the first hours and the it gets brain dead easy, or more like Underrail, where you have to follow the correct party composition and trinkets for every specific zone and boss or just get fucked

Early on in dev it was closer to the first but never slipped in difficulty because the game could always throw you a totally fucked cuntroll and force you on the backfoot at any time, and it'd be a puzzle trying to snake your way out without losing a toon. You'd still want to bring the right party for the right job, but you weren't forced to.
Then after it got popular the devs started nerfing memebuilds that were popular online and punishing certain playstyles that "they didn't like", rather than buffing up the complete dogshit unusable skills to the point of basic viability, which made it closer to the latter except you just get fucked anyways, because omg omg darkest dungeon so brutal so hard need to maintain reputation omg omg.
Ironically, this just made the range of choices more and more limited, because you increasingly were forced to run and play a very specific (and unfun) way, because the meta-targeted nerfs would impact the dogshit that had no way to play around it harder than the meta. Low DPS parties in particular were megapunished, so if you didn't have the damage output to clear an encounter within ~5 turns, you weren't beating the dungeon because you'd flag yourself as stalling and get endless reinforcements thrown at you. Toons like Antiquarian went from meme dogshit to unusable dogshit, toons that needed setup like Musketeer or setups like movement or marking parties slipped further down, while upfront no-gimmick power classes like Jester and Highwayman just became even more mandatory.

>when nigga
Started when they kneecapped Man a Arms riposte memebuilds, Crimson Court was the last reasonable time to play, terminal after Stealth + the P2W Shieldbreaker DLC because tl;dr if you didn't have something that could deal with Stealth, you had no ability to prioritise units and were a sitting duck waiting to die (at the time only like 3 classes had a viable way to that didn't fuck their build plan).
Color of Madness onward it was fucking over.

You will see some true rape bullshit once you hit lv5 dungeons, everything before is babby mode

I noticed that with a lot of "tough as nails" indie games, the community finds a solution so they nerf it into the ground while ignoring giving out buffs unless explicitly requested by an e-celeb.
