Should I play the original or the remake? Which one is better overall?
Is 2 remake a good remake?
I just beat the first game and while it was great, it was a very easy game, which is the main issue most old, fixed camera horror games have. How's 2 in this regard? I know horror game remakes tend to be more difficult than their original counterparts, which is good, but I also believe the atmosphere and pacing are more important than combat in these games.
>>
2 is easier, probably its main flaw. The remake is more challenging but people who liked 2 being ultra easy whined and they patched it to make it easier too. But it's still more challenging than the original.
I think it's a pretty good remake but if you're playing the whole series it may be weird to play a modern game and then 3 after. Could save the remake for last and get a different ending from your OG 2 playthrough if you're doing the whole series.

I am indeed going for the whole series. So it has multiple endings then? Is it just good/bad ending or there are different routes or something?
>>
Do these games share a larger continuity or are they mostly standalone?

Original on PCSX2
Don't forget to look up the good settings and plugins to use as well as filters and hd patches

2 was designed to be a much easier game in direct response to 1's difficulty, many players couldn't even finish it at the time. If you truly value that then it does significantly matter as 2's remake completely revamps the original's casualized combat to be MUCH more mechanically intensive. It's not just about the timings but learning when and how to combine all of the camera's moving parts based on the situation. The revamped combat was designed by Team Ninja, so the remake plays more like a methodical action game. Having said all of this, the original remains exceptional in terms of atmosphere and pacing, and while the remake isn't bad in these regards it isn't quite as immaculate as the original either. What you get is a much stronger emphasis on camera mechanics.

The original version of 2 is very easy; it's definitely the easiest of the series by a significant margin. But I'd still recommend it over the remake anyway because being harder doesn't make the remake better. The remake completely changes the combat so every enemy is an HP sponge and you avoid enemy attacks with dodges so the combat could be more action-based. The end result is that the combat sucks because every enemy is tedious to fight and it isn't scary because they diminished the focus on first-person perspective in combat.
The remake is also graphically pretty but makes some very questionable decisions regarding art direction at some points because of course it does; it's a remake. Also the remake is censored because of course it is; it's a modern KT release.

Also just for reference the Wii version is terrible, easily the worst version of the game.

They're all part of the same continuity with shared characters and lore.

This merits elaboration. The pre-launch demo was indeed deemed too difficult, BUT once you play the full game for more than an hour you learn that an unupgraded camera is woefully underpowered and that the moment you spec into focal points, the game actually becomes playable. It was honestly an ill-conceived demo, and the first handful of fights are indeed an unfun slog until you can start unlocking the fun mechanics like half an hour in. It's a lot like how Mirror's Edge Catalyst doesn't have the skill roll at the beginning - you unlock it 10 minutes in, but those first 10 minutes without it fucking suck.

I'd say 4 is still easier than OG 2, excepting maybe two endgame fights. Also, enemies being HP sponges are a problem to solve, you can one-shot a lot of things once you know what you're doing, or at least cascade one well-landed shot into death.

I keep hearing /v/ cry that psxc2 is shit though?

What about the director's cut for xbox? Heard it adds some stuff. If the game runs well on an xbox emulator that is.

>>750581942
OG 2 is a baby game but neither demake really fixed that issue so they're not worth bothering with.

>>750584305
The Xbox version is a straight improvement of the original PS2 version with more content but I have no idea how it emulates.

The original 2 is the blandest of the series so I'd go with the remake which has more interesting gameplay.

Here's my controversial ranking
3 > 4 Remake > 2 Remake > 1 > 5 > 2
>>
>>750581942
2 is my least favorite of the original 3 personally, even though it's probably the most popular. To me it just feels much less scary when your sister is with you for much of the game CRAWLING WOMAN.
I'm a huge fan of 3 which is spooky as fuck most of the time.
Anyway, the remake has many more game mechanics like a s*ulslike st*mina mechanic of sorts. I'd say if you've already played 1, then just try out both 2 OG and remake.

Mayu spends the vast majority of the game bumbling around wherever like a retard or being trapped in some room, she's barely ever with you.

I don't think "bland" is the right word for 2, I would say digestible. It's the one with the lowest barrier of entry by far, but that has as much to do with polish as it does difficulty. I think most can agree that it overtuned the camera for the worse, but the actual storytelling is far from the series' worst. I'd rank them as such:
1 > 3 > 2 > 2R > 5 > 4

Censored, don't bother.

the original 2 remake got memory holed hard

It's the only major entry I haven't played. I've even played Spirit Camera.

the original is better, but the remake was a good effort.
the dodging gameplay is fun in the remake, but the original has a stronger atmosphere, one of the house dungeons in the remake is waaay too bright compared to the original

because it was wii exclusive and only got a PAL and JP release, no US one. Although I remember it getting decent traction online at the time because of all the horror jewtubers played that were playing it.

The 2 remake is good, but it will seem like every ghost has ridiculously too much health until you upgrade focal points. It’s so important that they should have just locked all upgrade options until you upgrade focal points, because basic fights will feel like boss fights if you don’t. Swapping lenses and film while dodging around and adjusting zoom and focus all feels good in combat - most fun in the series once you get the hang of it, but does also make it feel like enough of an action game that it cuts down on the spookiness some. However, I kind of hate how they made the dodge and the special shots use the same resource, because half the time you can’t use special shots because you’re always having to dodge (and frequently getting the whole meter drained by ghosts using their jumpscare attack on you anyways). Still a good game. I prefer it to the og version.

This can't be real. I beat that game yesterday without even touching stronger films, and with a year's supply of healing items.

1's generally considered to be the hardest entry in the series, with a second half ramp-up that can genuinely screw you over if you played the first half poorly enough. I'm surprised anyone who has actually taken down an old monk would say the game's particularly easy.

ALWAYS play the original game, no matter what.
Every single modern demake cuts, censors, and otherwise butchers the experience and atmosphere in numerous ways.

Start with the original PS2 FF1, and work your way up from there. If you've played classic Resident Evil or Silent Hill games, you'll be right at home.

>>750583074
The OG trilogy is all connected, with #3 closing up both 1 and 2's stories well, on top of bringing its own plot to the mix.

>The 2 remake is good,
Wrong. It's extra casualized over-shoulder slop, with somehow way worse cinematography.
