What do you think of the OG Metroid trilogy /v/?
>>750580468I think the original holds up better than what most people may expect.I don't know why I ever thought II was better than the original.Love Super, simple as.
>>750580468stupid
>>7505804681 and 2 are good for the time, Super Metroid is great even by today standards
we need a prequel with loli Samus.
>>750580468Metroid is good for the NES.Metroid II is good for the Gameboy.Super Metroid is still good today. In my personal nostalgia, pre-SNES games can be fun but they aren’t quite fully formed.
NEStroid is a lot of fun. Pure unadulterated exploration adventure with the least guardrails in the series. the only gates are missile doors and you find a tank within 5 minutes of starting the game. unparalleled atmosphere, you really feel alone and isolated, no ship hub to go back too, no friendly animals or save rooms, its just room upon room upon room of shit that wants you DEAD. Thre's no map, you have to either memorize your surroundings and get familiar with the layout, or make the map yourself(or look up a map like a weenie). Her arsenal is great, minus not being able to have wave AND ice for some reason. The bosses really arent great(sans the MB fight) but look, it was 1986, cut it some slack. it couldnt even fit 1MB of code on it. Love the OST, its a thrilling mashup of beep boops and dripping, cold atmosphere designed to really make you feel like youre alone in the world. Ultimately its not perfect obviously, as the MB fight has a TON of sprite flickering and slowdown(again, 1986 tho) and respawning with 30 health sucks, but as an overall package its a very enjoyable experience to kick off sammy's series1/3
1 is a pretty good game mechanically but it is terrible because of no minimap or SRAM saving, it's unplayable without hacks for those.2 isn't very impressive but it's a good game considering most OG gameboy games were just terrible and not worth playing, 5/10.Super is one of the best video games ever made and it spawned countless romhacks, it's so good indie games are still aping it.
>>750581576II is an ambitious sequel, and in my head plays the closest to samus as an actual 'bounty hunter', but fighting the same metroids over and over and over again loses its luster after awhile and it doesnt do much to punch its weight outside of that. great sprite work. The spiderball is really cool and enables more exploration than "lets randomly put electronic tracks on this wall or ceiling" like the prime games do, and it actually feels like youre on some alien world rather than a jungle gym the chozo set up for you to find alter. Her arsenal is fine, but I dont think the small screen size does it any favors. I know, its gameboy, it HAS to be small, but even on SGB on an SNES, its still cramped. The boss fights are pretty good, I dont remember much about them though. better graphics obviously, definitely helps to accentuate samus's suit. I give it a 7/10Samus returns 3DS is fine as a remake, but there's an over reliance on the parry mechanic that deviates too far from natural combat and ultiamtely, its STILL just fighting the same metroids voer and over and over again. Which obviously, you cant make a remake and change the whole game, but there still isnt enough to make it that exciting to go back to2/3
>>750580468The best 2D games. May Allah smite sakamoto for the direction he put the 2D games on after he tool over
>>750582043Super is obviously the big one, and while I do think it lives up to its reputation as a series staple, anyone calling it a flawless masterpiece are delusional. Maridia sucks ass, plain and simple. Its an exercise in frustration and it feels less like a gauntless you have to adapt to and overcome and more like a slog that you have to endure until you FINALLY get gravity. Just put up with ALL the bullshit until you finally can move again. Controls are very solid, and I wish we'd go back to diagonal aiming instead of the 180* aiming dread and SR have, but I'm sadly the minority on this one. SM can obviously be broken wide open, but there are still annoying gates to stop you like super gates and doors(seriously, why does this even exist?) so for all for its speedrunning tech its still arbitrarily gated for no real reason. LOTS of mobility options, plenty of neat weapons and exploration, it is SOUNDLY the best option to really FEEL like samus aran. it introduced shinesparking, a series staple now but so wqell built into the game world that you can fly up, left, or right(or diagonally) and feel like youre just rocketing around like superman. Subweapon switching on select is kind of annoying ergonomics-wise and the xray scope stopping you in place(sprite limitations, I know) is as well. Really not a fan of the boss fights desu, Draygon and phantoon suck fucking ass and one of the fights is ltierally a dragon playing whack a mole. Mother brain's fight is fun, but its a drag to have to sit through the metroid cutscene evry single time. Great atmosphere and soundtrack, very capable sammy, great spritework, fantastic arsenal, a quintessential pillar of the franchise. 8.5/10thank you for coming to my TED talk
>>750582138This, everything post-Super is absolute trash that raped Metroid and left it for the retards and faggots.
>Metroid 1For what it's worth, the game is pretty damn good and once you figure out the map, the replay value comes from being a speed game, which is a genius design idea even if the game is buttfuckingly punishing. Call me crazy but this sort of game feels like something you'd see on an arcade, think Gauntlet where you're on a timer but you can insert a coin to play for longer, but if you get to 1CC, bikini samus greets you. That's the vibe i get out of this game, but i will say that aiming in this game is AIDS, i hate that samus' shots are tiny and fly over enemies heads just by standing still, Megaman did shooting better.>Metroid 2Pretty damn good game even if the chiptune ambiance is too ambitious for what it is (you will hear blips and boops more than the banger overworld theme of SR388), better controls than 1 for sure and all the better for it. Does suck that it got a remake way after R&D1 (the nintendo devteam that made the GBA Metroids) was rehauled. >SuperThis game is the GOAT, every single metroidvania game owes it to Super Metroid (except Cave Story, that game is more like Metroid 2 but with good music) because more than 3 decades later, Super is still the gold standard upon which every game of the genre is held up to. The ONLY flaw i can say about Super is the shitty firerate for your beams, though this is just bias considering other Metroid game (even NES and GB2) let you machinegun the uncharged beam. Playing ZM or Fusion before Super will have you bemoan the slow firerate.
>>750582043I really adore what sound design adds to Metroid II, giving you tense metroid encounters, funky alien world ambiance, the sense of adventure when delving deeper in the main cavern, and the ending run and credits to the ship. Excellent game and while I think AM2R is the best way to play it, I concede that Mercury Stream was warming up and I am enjoying Dread, even though it feels like I backteack a lot.
>>7505804681 is bad but fun and novel, i really like how it looks and sounds2 is garbageSuper is a masterpiece
>>750580468I've been playing Samus Return for the OG gameboy. Surprisingly good.
>>750583275>bad but fun
>>750581576Agreed, NEStroid's atmosphere is amazing. Approaching the game on its own terms creates an experience vastly different from Zero Mission. I just wish you spawned with a bit more health and the health drops had more HP as well>>750582043Similarly to Metroid 1, Metroid 2 on the gameboy has a whole unique atmosphere, like you said because the spiderball lets you explore the caves in its entirety. The moment it dawned on me that the abandoned lab I entered physically existed in this space and I could climb on its ceiling was amazing. It's a crazy leap from the NES game>>750582573I think the bosses are pretty good. I recently replayed it and I beat every boss with like less than 100hp left, like it balanced perfectly. Plus killing Draygon with the electricity thing is fun
>>750581576>respawning with 30 health sucksNot only sucks it sucks ass iy ruins the game for me because dying means having to grind for life next to a super mario pipe for 20 minutes later in the game.I love how Samus moves, she is tiny and the screen is huge but her jump is high amd gives you a lot of options on how to land. Also yout morphball is bouncy as hell, pretty fun to bounce down one of the many vertical shaft of the map.
>>750582573You don’t have to do anything in maridia until you get gravity
>>750583658>Plus killing Draygon with the electricity thing is funit is, but thats pretty much the ONLY way to fight her besides an AWFUL hit and run battle with her spider web things>>750583912>dying means having to grind for life next to a super mario pipe for 20 minutes later in the gameiirc you get better health drops from fighting enemies that down spawn from the pipes>he screen is huge but her jump is high amd gives you a lot of options on how to land.yes, the platform sections over lava felt specifically designed to be just enough space to run off the platforms and naturally fall onto the next one below you. I like how the screw attack worked too
>>750580468Games the newer entries can't measure to flesh out or make justice at all. At least Prime trilogy was a great reimagination of the concept
>>750581576Thoughts on Zero Mission since you brought up Samus Returns?
>>750580468I actually just finished Metroid II for the first time a couple days ago, which is the last of the three that I played. I thought Super Metroid was great, but I absolutely loved the original NES Metroid. Everything about it. I was obsessed with it the entire time I played it. Every time I turned it off to go do something else I'd just end up going right back to it within 10 minutes. I don't know if any other game I've played gives me the feeling of power that getting a single upgrade in Metroid does. I need to replay it and get the bikini ending, then I'll probably go back and replay Super Metroid again once I beat Fusion, since I might appreciate it even more now. Metroid II fucking sucked.>>750581132Metroid: -1 Mission
>>750580468Metroid 1 starts to become more recognizably Metroid-y after the first hour. It's a lot more complicated game than it first suggests. The best looking rooms are deep in the game. Metroid 2 is a black and white game in very low resolution with tinny sound. I've never been able to bring myself to complete it. Who knows, perhaps I would change my opinion on it the way I did on Metroid 1?Super Metroid is excellent, however the rom hacks that have been released in recent years are actually even better games and are some of the best rom hacks ever produced for any kind of game at all.
The lovely thing about the original trilogy, in particular with 1 and 2, is that their respective remakes do not really replace them.Zero Mission may be a speedrun game with how much emphasis it has over how fast you can go and how many built-in shortcuts there are over the map, But Metroid 1's experience is more of an arcade game, a REAL arcade game from that era. You run into dead-ends because that shit is there to somewhat punish you, you respawn with pp ass HP because the better option is just to start from a fresh save than trying to fill up 5 e-tanks, and Metroid's shooting may be worse than what came after (or even what came at the same time in the same hardware, Megaman and Contra definitely had better shooting than Metroid even if the genres are extremely different). ZM is an update to Metroid 1, sure, but it is not an upgrade that makes Metroid 1 redundant to play, game's better than what the general sentiment of "BOO HOO THE GAME CONTROLS LIKE SHIT" spiel from late 2000's reviewers on youtube give it.And hell, the same goes for Metroid 2, AM2R is a phenomenal game and Samus Returns is pretty good on its own terms, but one thing that felt missing from said remakes was the feeling of isolation the og title gave you. The chiptune didn't do justice to the ambiance, but it did set the isolationist tone compared to AM2R just remixing pre-existing metroid music in Prime's soundfont, or SR's own tracks that don't feel the same. None of the remakes really capture the feel of isolation than the part before you get on the Metroid Lab, just pure loneliness as you roam around alone.
>>750582573>Maridia sucks ass, plain and simple. Its an exercise in frustration and it feels less like a gauntless you have to adapt to and overcome and more like a slog that you have to endure until you FINALLY get gravity.???In the "invisible hand" intended progression route you never step foot into Maridia without the Gravity suit.
>>750584664its a great game, but it completely misses the point of NEStroid which is taking in your surroundings and fighting for survival. The chozo statues suuuuuuuuck and it feels like they're holding your hand to make sure you always know where to go next or recharge your health so you can finish the game in like an hour. Really not a fan of the giant bumble bee boss either, it felt like a mindless run and dodge fight that was just out of the blue and served no purpose other than to block a route through the world. Mechanically? superior in every way. Walljumping is always a plus in a metroid game and you can equip different beams now without having to go bacak and get ice, and the boss fights are MUCH more polished and fleshed out. I've played Zero and super like 50 times and for some reason still struggle with kraid every time. much better graphics, very cute sammy cutscenes, not a huge fan of the ZSS segment but if they made her movement a little better I think people would like it more, it felt clunky to me. Not a fan of MB's optic blast but its great to not have sprite flicker and slowdown anymore. Love having super's, not a fan of them being basically worthless other than being used to get more supers8.5/10
If the original Metroid NES had1. a save feature like the FDS2. let you save at elevators or upon death3. respawned you with the health of your last save (or 30 if you died and saved)I think a lot more people would have completed it for real instead of using the Justin Bailey code.
>>750585480>2. let you save at elevators
Pure kino even if 1 and 2 are a pain in the ass to actually play
>>750585653>even if 1 and 2 are a pain in the ass to actually play>>750585571
>>750580928I prefer playing it in Mesen with the MetroidHD modification. Makes for a very solid playthrough, with just enough QoL to make it a legitimately okay Metroid game.I do switch out the sounds/music for the original NES sounds though.
>>7505804681 would be a lot better if you didn't need to write a fifty page essay as a substitute for save files, and started you at full health/missiles.Of course, the famicom disc version DOES let you save and avoid that shit, but unless you lived on a single tiny island nation, this isn't relevant.Loved super as a kid.Now it's.... not as appealing. My main problem with it is that it's just too damn easy.People love to shit on fusion because of wordswordswords, but it really doesn't have THAT much dialogue. It has quick, snappy controls, and is one of the harder games and even had a hard mode for those that want a bigger challenge. It's always been my favorite.
I first played them recently and I think all three hold up.
>>750582043The newer metroids don't take enough from the cool ideas Metroid 2 brought to the table. Spiderball for crevaces and the map feeling more like real places(spatially) instead of crammed corridors.
>>750583554Kusokino
>>750580468Garbage, I played them two years ago and the first two were a 6/10 at best with the guide being mandatory. Super Metroid which is supposedly une of the best games of the entire genre was mid too so I didnt even finish it to this day and havent played a Metroid game since. I guess I will just be a larper.
>with the guide being mandatory.
>>750580468Unplayable garbage until Super
>>750585025>better option is just to start from a fresh save than trying to fill up 5 e-tanks, and Metroid's shooting may be worse than what came afterThis
>>750580468Hard carried by Super.
