Tekken 1-3 were in the span of three years in terms of releases, that’s different from the 6 years Capcom spent revising Street Fighter 2 five times and releasing three iterations of Alpha with the latter having most of the former’s roster on top of its own by Alpha 3. That’s not even counting the various crossover games like MvC. So imagine 6 years getting invested in these characters only for all of them to get tossed out save for Ryu and Ken by the time of A New Generation. Tekken didn’t have to deal with that. People knew Kazuya and Heihachi for two years before Jin took over and some characters have backstories so convoluted, see King(s) and Nina, that the timeskip may as well be irrelevant while saying Tekken 3 is the true start of everything.

Timeskips do not work if your franshise has no actual story and continuity. Without that you just end up with millennial puppets they never want to throw away and cry when there is a new one.Virtua Fighter not being that big on story and now going deep into it is the perfect moment to clean up some of the stinkers and breath some fresh life into the roster.The singleplayer just needs to be good and no one but the 20 japanese salarymen who still play VF5 will care that Chinese Guy O Long got replaced with by a character with interactions and motivations.
