That's largely because Oda cares a lot more about worldbuilding and politics in his writing than he does writing involved character dynamics. Other than Gosetsu and stuff in the Azim Steppe, Stormblood doesn't have as much great character writing as the expansions people praise for their story. The gameplay, content, and design in Stormblood was pretty great, though. And the story has since been vindicated because DT shows what it's like when you remove all of the "dry"/political DNA from the story and are left without the cohesive worldbuilding that makes the setting feel like it's populated by actual fucking humans and not Naruto characters. The early expansions had the feeling that it was a distinctly high fantasy setting with lots of magic but the people still behaved like humans and there were consequences for actions. Political intrigue had to be solved with actual wisdom and practicality, or else you'd end up with stuff like the Crystal Braves. I think a lot of that is owed to the same philosophy that made Stormblood very dry, because Stormblood is a very political story about revolution and nationalism. Similarly, the big criticism that Lyse sucked as a leading character has since been vindicated a bit because Wuk Lamat is actually guilty of the shit people accused Lyse of, and it's the worst shit ever.

The golden age of XIV will always be 2.0-5.0, which is honestly a very long time for an MMO. most fizzle out after the second expansion. Once SHB released, while things were still mostly solid, it immediately became a VN with gameplay the players tolerated so they could see their parasocial favorite NPC do an emote during cutscenes. Everything changed from then on, for the worse.

They ruined jobs to cater to hardcore raiders, who were the ones that bitched about balance or a job having friction that got in the way of optimizing fights. They also catered to raiders with all of the content that flopped (Chaotic, Quantum) because it's geared to be difficult enough for them, among other issues.Chaotic was not a hit. It was dead content in less than a month and has pretty low clear rates.
