you had to level every pokemon individually for most of the game until you got xp share because people didn't have shit to do back then

Why would you level every pokemon?
If you want to beat the game the best way to play is to funnel all of your exp into your starter and overwhelm every gym with sheer stats, you can overcome any type disadvantage by pumping your poke full of X Specials

It should still only level up the pokemon you use in battles, but all (or at least most) battles should be doubles format and XP gain should be MUCH quicker, however you are level capped by badges. This also means gym fights can be balanced around that level cap, re-introducing tougher gym leaders.

For early gyms there would also be a gimmick that forces you into doing a questline. It can be as simple as 'gym leader X had a pokemon that has an impenetrable exo-skeleton; to break through it, you need to explore nearby cave/mountain/forest and capture the elusive Y pokemon that carries a item of exo-skeleton penetration'.

The pokemon you capture would also be super effective against the gym but would be a lower level so you would have to train it up if you want to use it long-term. This teaches items, encourages capturing pokemon, and shows how type advantage can make a big difference. All of that while allowing the gym leaders to actually be challenging while having a clear weakness that you are encouraged to exploit.

Latter half gym leaders would cover over type weaknesses, would not have a nearby counter pokemon for you to catch, and would out-level you; requiring you to come up with a good team comp and figure out their weaknesses (it wouldn't be as simple as just types in the end game; you would need to utilise trick-room or drizzle or shield breaking moves like psychic fangs to mess up their style).

Then when people end up playing ranked pvp they wouldn't be confused and terrible.
>>
>>750567868
you are retarded its the strongest starter by far.

It's not even an age thing. Most rpgs have always leveled the whole party or had multiple party members participate in battle to earn XP. Pokemon just sucked in this regard. SMT is the better monster catchan game because it's designed around demons being replaceable. When you catch something it already has a somewhat complete kit and if it's a shitmon you throw it into the blender and get something cooler. You don't need to catch something and do the whole menu switch thing like 50 times before it's useful.

>gen 5 is now as old as gen 1 was when gen 5 came out
>>
>>750565884
Look, there are legitimate reasons to think the original Pokemon games weren't that good, even by the standards of the time.
But needing to level up your Pokemon individually isn't one of them. The whole point is letting yourself get attached to your Pokemon as you make them better and better. Not knowing which moves they learn as they grow, not knowing what they evolve into. Figuring out what you want to use them for as their role in your party develops.

Of course, these games have been documented to Hell and back, and their own perpetual media frenzy makes it almost impossible to go in blind, which has killed a lot of the fun that comes naturally, leaving only what players can claw back for themselves by obsessing over optimization.

So to you, the term classic is simply a matter of age alone, disregarding any and all other qualifications? Interesting how language functions in the plebeian goy mind.

Blastoise has to be one of the shittiest starters I have ever used in-game. Fat fuck has surf and ice beam, but never kills the target and offers no utility like sleep or para. He is a glorified raft for your Nidoking.
>"But Meganium is even weaker"
Chikorita had goddamn early reflect and Bayleef had synthesis + body slam. The line was nearly unkillable at the time despite being a grass type in a region where everything had a type advantage over it. Meanwhile the Treecko line did fuck-all and die constantly until the Grovyle learned leaf blade halfway through the game, possibly even slightly later if you had a large, balanced team.

What part of "If you have to switch, your pokemon loses" do you not understand?

This is why Charizard is the best starter. It almost never has to switch when anything that can't be brought down with fire spam is easily KO'd by scratch and slash. You just choose an attack, KO the pokemon, and move onto the next one next turn. Even normies get it, which is part of why they love Charizard so much. The fire breathing dragon actually kills shit.

There was a time when people claimed Typhlosion and Houndoom were the best fire types in the game because they could hit water types hard with thunder punch and STAB crunch. The days when people bragged about their salac berry + swords dance Blaziken that had never once seen a sand stream in its life.

Twenty years have passed, and the flying typing everyone once made fun of twenty years ago is now the very reason Charizard fights for the top fire type of gen 3 with fellow fire/flying Moltres.

I used to hate the EXP share affecting the whole team but it actually makes it possible to use more than 6 Pokemon throughout the game and that's pretty cool.
>>
>>750565884
You rotate them out when a pokemon starts getting above the level curve or level them all evenly. I don’t see the problem. If anything the problem with modern games is that the exp share is forced and the games aren’t balanced for it.

Stopped reading there.
There is zero point to a leveling progression system if you’re going to ignore it.
You literally just test your game based on player grinding habits and figure out the how much easily accessible exp you will give the player.
You do not remove the choice of grinding either you simply make it harder.
Its not rewarding otherwise
>>
>>750565884
I know i beat it reacently

I loved using Starmies tho, Misty's team is OP
This game is literally only hard on Brock then maybe Misty can filter you if you didnt catch a Clafairy or whatever can use Mega Kick but after that its smooth sailing. It's hyper easy.
Too many monotypes. It's hyper unbalanced.
Its not even worth it having a flying type until Dudrio tbqh or that Farfetch trade to use Fly.

You absolutely need a water pokemon or one of those OP surf users like the Nidos or Snorlax.
The game gives you 2 Snorlaxes... 1 Lapras.
Which are insanely tanky in this kind of game.

You can just overlevel your starter to steamroll ~90% of the game. For the other ~10% you can usually catch a pokemon eith a type advantage near each gym and use it near the level you catch it to steamroll. The only thing you'd probably need to grind for is the elite four, and yeah that's a little annoying, but I don't think the game would be better if every pokemon you have were automatically arbitrarily hiked up to a certain level based on where you are in the game or how much xp your starter has.
The xp algorithm in gen 5 where the difference between your guy and the enemy scales the xp you get, is one of the biggest imrpovements they've ever made to the series in my opinion. It makes it a lot easier to have 6 pokemon around the required level for each boss, and much harder to have one guy 5-10 levels above the level curve that hogs all the xp. All this without allowing you to just level a pokemon up without ever having it out in battle.

Beedrill made sense in the context of gen 1 bug being super effective against poison, FRLG took away its niche
>>
>>750574825
>One bug move in the entire fucking game
>50 BP
>A whole 100 BP if it's super effective
>EQ and dig are 100 BP without any effort
Nah it's shit

More like 5-6 at the most. Zard had long been shelved as far back as gen 2 after bellyzard and sunnyzard bombed. It wasn't until Moltres struck it big that people began to try out what many had long theorized to be a poor man's mixmence. The beat up tech hardly even existed until after Zard had proven itself to be OU material on mixed offense teams.

Nigger what? Extremely few abra line users and even then zam has the same base speed

While we are bitching about starters, I hate using empoleon in platinum.

Piplup is the only starter that could lose to roark to to bubble being shit

Only starter to have no chance against mars purugly

Has no ice move for gardenia, gets shit on

Fantina shits on all three starters

No niche against Marlene’s unlike the other two

Wake is ok with grass knot, without it you are walled

All starters destroy Byron, but even then it’s the only one that struggles with magneton.

Actually good against Candice, just not better that infernape

Cyrus is fine except the gyarados with earthquake

Volkner sucks

Aaron would be fine if not for heracross

Bertha and flint are shakier than they should be due to the part steel typing

Lucian has a lot of fighting and ground moves

Cynthia’s garchomp, togekiss, lucario and Milotic all threaten it.

You just had to send the Pokémon you are leveling out first then swap into a type advantage, then once it's leveled enough go and fight stuff it's got type advantage against.

Anyway you end up catching all the legendaries which replace some of the underleveled shitter's you have been dragging along all game

whats the good part though? this shit is toddler difficulty

Venusaur is a good starter because it frees up your water and fire slots for something like Arcanine and Dragonite. He’s also tanky as fuck and is extremely good with the first two rounds of the elite four.

In firered too, the elite four is actually challenging so having a strong and balanced team is necessary.

Pluck is not killing roserade before roserade kills it.

>this shit is toddler difficulty
I always find it weird people talking about single player Pokémon like there is a need for a metagame, while every elementary schooler finished it without having even used the internet ever
>>
>needing to grind for the elite 4
Are these people retarded. You can clear any elite 4 with a team all in the 45-50 range which you will easily hit just playing the game and fighting trainers normally.
>>
>>750575871
People want to min max these games because they can’t let them go and play a superior monster collector like dragon quest joker.

Eevees are rabbits. I don't care if they have tails. They're rabbits. Bulls don't have three tails, but we still call Tauros a bull.
>>
>>750576049
Rabbits do have tails, what the hell are you talking about?
>>
>>750575946
Think it would be adequate to just catch the 3 legendary birds and have a lv50 starter, probably don't even need that
>>
>>750576141
Long tails. You know what I meant.
>>
>>750575946
They’re a noticeable step up from the rest of the game, many people skip trainers and the game actually encourages you to do so. FR/LG probably have the most challenging elite four. Most of the other games they’re pretty easy.

If you beat every trainer you will have a party of 5 at around level 50 when you get to the elite four, which is barely enough to clear it.

I know this because I literally just did this last week.

Pre physical/special split is, and always has been, classic Pokemon
>>
>>750565884
Pretty sure even the originals had training centers to park pokemon there and level them up, but I haven’t played since ruby/emerald
>>
>>750568834
It's a remake of the first game and for the most part just cleans up bugs with a little extra content. Sure it has abilities but it's classic enough.
HGSS does more so I consider that a gen 4 companion.
>>
>>750575946
Gen 1 actually has a noticable level jump for the E4 even if you do your due diligence of beating every trainer. Only game where I have to sit around grinding some levels before I give it a real attempt.
By grinding I mean spending all my money and then just fighting and losing the elite four over and over until they get me up to speed of course.
>>
>>750571561
Nah, because a film adaptation of a myth is not even the same wheelhouse of thing while a video game in the same series that is nearly isomorphic to the original is pretty close.
A closer analogy to FRLG would just be another modern translation of the Odyssey
>>
>>750576049
there's nothing rabbit like about eevee. they're foxes except espeon
>>
>>750571115
the series began with party wide exp.share
>>
>>750565884
Pokemon is slow as shit even for the time. Just look at Golden Sun that has 4v4 battles moving faster than FRLG at 2x emulator speed
>>
>>750565937
Try leveling a Magikarp or Dratini. It's a slog to switch over and over
