What went wrong?, it got forgotten so fucking fast
>>
>>750563819
nothing went wrong. It was shit, so therefore it should be forgotten quickly
>>
>steamies actually thought this piece of shit would kill consoles
>>
>>750563819
>What went wrong?
Linux
>>
no one wants to pay 1300 for a shitbox. the appeal of a console is playing modern AAA without spending >1000 or dealing with setup. the appeal of a PC is having high end hardware to play the latest and greatest in max settings. the shit machine does neither and thus appeals to no one except gabe simps.
>>
>>750563890
>the appeal of a PC is having high end hardware to play the latest and greatest in max settings
that's not the appeal at all

It's a small and slightly underpowered computer you can't even buy unless you win a lottery. It's exactly as popular as it should be, the only thing it has going for itself is form factor. If they'd start mass producing and selling $100-$200 PC cases, i'd very strongly consider getting one and setting up a small TV companion PC, but I'm not dropping >$1000 on such an useless thing.

AI lol
>>
nothing
it's a pc that defaults into steam big picture that you use with a controller
it doesn't have anticonsumer tactics that force people to engage with it in a specific way
>>
It should have been 600€
>>
>>750563819
this whole conversation is so stupid, because the steam machine can't be sold for what it's actually worth, because ai fucked everything.
If they'd sell it for the rumored 800+ bucks (iirc) it'd be an awesome box for people getting into pc gaming
>>
>>750563819
>why did this system that was supposed to cost $700 at most before releasing for over $1000 and had an endless waitlist due to practically no supply stopped being talked about?
Why do people ask dumb questions they already know the answer to? Are you that bored?
>>
>>750563859
Consoles are totally fucked regardless of the steam machine's existence.
>>
>>750564229
Two more weeks.
>>
>>750564286
The Switch 2 is getting its games dumped and emulated in less time than that lol
>>
>>750563819
Gabe got really greedy shortly after the Deck released.
>>
>>750563819
It's pretty good for something that was targeting $750.
Price of hardware fucked Valve. Other hardware game companies are playing chicken with their next big releases, but it's getting very close to someone having to bite the bullet. Manufacturing has to start soon and the price of hardware still hasn't stopped.

Although I did hear that China's AI bubble burst this week, so who knows.
>>
>>750564286
Tick tock, drone.
>>
>>750563819
Nobody who has a gaming PC needs one, and it's too expensive for anyone who doesn't already have a gaming PC.
>>
>>750563819
Something went wrong? You mean them not being able to make 'em fast enough? My guess is that it's a component availability problem, they probably can't buy RAM or SSDs fast enough to match demand for these things, so they're waitlisted. Same thing is happening with the Steam Frame too.
>>
>>750563819
1) Killed in utero by hardware prices, could've been competitive or even popular if it was 30-40% cheaper
2) even if it was cheaper it would be mostly a hit in turd world countries because less people there can afford actual pcs but steam doesnt sell to turdies anyway
>>
I played some hard times 3 on mine last night
>>
>>750563890
Just like the other anon said, thats not the main appeal. Modern AAA is shit anyways. I built my 5070ti pc so that I could do 3d stuff and also emulate everything and pretty much play whatever I want
>>
>>750563819
Too much expensive for the hardware.
At that point, just bite the bullet and splurge few hundred bucks more for a much better result.
The only value is its form factor.
>>750564000
Even 700/800€ would've been acceptable, but more than 1000€ without even a controller is not.
>>
>>750563819
People talking as if something went wrong when it's not available for purchase due to demand. So I'd say nothing really went wrong in the way you're insinuating.
I wanted one as a console PC for my TV/couch set up.
>just use a regular PC
The main draws for me are HDMI-CEC, which is not supported by any motherboard I know of, and the ability to wake from sleep with Bluetooth, which has very varying levels of success on regular hardware.

For now I'm using my SteamDeck for this purpose, which support both of these. For heavier games I just stream from my desktop and it works very well.
>>
>>750563819
I still want one because it looks super small and cute, like my penis.
>>
>>750564176
Why didn't they risk doing that? They could have easily made the money back with Steam purchases. Gaben is fucking swimming in money, but now he can't take any risks anymore?
>>
>>750563819
High ram and ssd prices
>>
>>750563819
Nothing. Literally every valve tech was a failure. Steam link, steam deck, steam machine, steam controller (both) steam VR etc
All failed.

>>
>>750564364
Yeah just like Switch 1, Wii, PS3, literally every console. Nobody bought those, right? Two more weeks!
>>
>>750563819
The people that got one are enjoying theirs. The production run was limited to a few thousands at most.
I've been enjoying my Steam Frame, it's glorious. But you don't see me making threads about it.
I know a lot of people that have switched to SteamOS because of the launch of Steam Machine; they wanted to make their own - but more powerful - variant, so to speak. And that has always seemed the purpose behind the Steam Machine. To be a vessel for SteamOS
>>
>>750563849
He died of cancer.
>>
>>750566180
I can do all of those things on my 5060 with 8gb vram and even thats more than enough. emulation? lmao
>>
>>750569828
Yeah, emulation is almost outdated thanks to AI decoompers, but that was my original plan. At least now I can also fuck around with some lightweight llms
>>
>>750563819
The best PC right now in terms of value for money is a jailbroken PS5 Pro
>>
>>750566727
>They could have easily made the money back with Steam purchases.
That only works if they're successfully growing their audience, which for one means consistently sourcing those parts and for two only selling it in regions where the people buying it won't be existing steam users.
>>
>>750563819
>What went wrong?
Too expensive for what it is.
Out of stock.
>>
I wish I had not gifted away all my CS boxes and shit many years ago when they were dirt cheap.
I could've bought a machine with valvebux from them now
>>
>>750567009
Emulation isn't the reason consoles are fucked, but it will make sony and nintendo shit themselves in rage as they go down. Enjoy your final generation, bootlicking slave.

It was meant to be a budget friendly consolised PC, sacrificing top end specs/customisability for user value

Instead, it was expensive and mediocre performance wise...... actually now I've said it, it really WAS a console
>>
can you use AI on it
>>
>>750563849
If i pull him off will he die?
>>
>>750563819
The idea was good, the price was terrible. Valve should have cancelled it or made a paper launch over that shit show.
>>
>>750566727
Because the primary audience for the Steam Machine ALREADY bought all their games on Steam. It's prohibitively expensive to make more so any idea of expanding their audience went out the window since all the fanboys (and scalpers) would scoop them up first. They'd be selling at a loss to someone they can't get any more money out of. Jacking up the price and fleecing Valve enthusiasts was the only possible move they could make that would see any kind of return on it.
