Yes. The setting was great and ripe for dozens of games.
They fucked it all up though.
>>
>>750559262
It didn't, but after 2 it fell off a cliff, even though 2 itself was kino, 10/10 and elevated the franchise after an excellent first game, and then took it even higher.

ME3 is where shit went wrong, and they forgot to ask themselves if the approach they were taking even was the right way to handle it. But of course they didn't because it wasn't the original 5 writers talking about it anymore, it was Casey Hudson and the Ship of Theseus.

I swear the secret asian shit is gay and you faggots have been shilling it for years, even back when the games were an ongoing series so I wasn't surprised at the trailer and happy it died because fuck bioware retards sank their own ship for actively antagonizing their longtime fans in favour of woke faggots that down even play their games

It’s difficult to be excited about what it could have been, because they didn’t hire developers based on ability, but rather what poitical opinions they supported on social media.

People who swear by Mass Effect 2 are cut from the same cloth as the retards who think Inquisition is the best Dragon Age.
>>
>>750559456
Yep. For far most people it went the way of GoT S8, and if you ask innumerable GoT fans you used to talk to (like actual normies) about it now they just go "I don't even wanna talk about it bro."

Same thing with Mass Effect. It was JUST becoming mainstream with 2, and I had all sorts of unusual parts of my friend groups be like "You played that game? Hell yeah! Me too, who was your favorite?"

and then with 3 someone would come at me afterwards like "You picked the ending, but it doesn't change anything LOL!" and that's the last time they talked about the series.

The #SaveMassEffect are just all of the humiliation-ritual or actual trannyfags who have latched onto BioWare as their Safe Space mascot.

Endings are not unimportant to the whole of a story.
Kingdom Hearts will be looked back on with rage if they suddenly fuck it up in KHIV as well.
Typically it's really simple things like, if you're GONNA kill off the main character, is it earned? Or if you definitively ruin a fundamental relationship that drove the heart of the series (Last of Us 2) instead of maybe doing something else to land it.
And with Mass Effect some say it was the choices, but that doesn't fly with me. By the time you even get to the end of 3 the choices hardly mattered at all, and really really huge decisions were dropped on the floor in plain sight, like when you go to Cerberus HQ and see they have half of the Human Reaper in there, but you chose "Destroy the Collector Base". And Udina is always the Councilor. By the time I got there I had already given up about "choices mattering" so the unique hatred I felt for the ending has to stem from something else. And what it is, is simply story.
If you strip all 3 games of choices and even if you pick the worst options as the linear story through the entire journey, you'll still mostly end up emotionally attached by the time you're near the end of 3, and you'll still find that what the Catalyst says about the Reapers and the nature of the "cycles", and how Shepard fits into that sequence as a protagonist, just is not an emotionally compelling or intellectually insightful way to end the series.

They made the whole trilogy suddenly about "how Machine Intelligence always gets created and then destroys everything" even though that description neither fits the Reapers cuz they don't kill "everything", and it doesn't describe various AI creations of Shepard's life-time, like the Geth or EDI, because those aren't fucking gonna destroy everything.

It's as if you reach the ending and suddenly the writers forget what story they're writing for, like they just watched I-robot the night before and made a fanfiction ending for that.
>>
DA2 was quite a big shift in knowing where EA wanted to take things with Bioware. Even if you have hangups with the things ME2 did, it's still a solid entry and arguably very comparable to ME1 for different reasons. DA2 was the start of things to come, and ME3 despite having similar great story moments ended up suffering with rushed development and lack of cohesive vision all the same. Everything afterwards was a dumpster fire attempting to chase trends without the time or talent to actually execute properly. DA:I was a shitty singleplayer MMO with character and lore assassination. Anthem had potential but Bioware somehow forgot you need an end game for something of that genre. DA:V was horrendous and it full on showcased the problem with management and the issue with having politically aligned "fans" running your development.

The same shit happened to Blizzard. Zero talent. Trend chasing and development based on what their shitty college courses taught them. No inspiration, no fantasy and entirely rampant with ideas by people with zero world experience and simultaneously forced real world current events and political ideologies.

They basically invalidated all the players choices, it was massively important when the game sold itself on the idea of player choice mattering. its hard to do that though. Is it just a coincidence that Mass Effect is dead and AI is thriving?
>>
>>750559681
ME2 improved moment to moment gameplay, but then went and started giving explanations to things it really shouldn't have. Just like 3 introduced the DLC that explained how the Reapers were the creation of giant squids with the express purpose of stopping the lesser races from wiping themselves out with AI...only for the very same squids to be near exterminated by their creation. Meaning the Reapers aren't "beyond our comprehension" but a digital construct doing exactly what it was programmed to do the entire time.

>>
>>750559262
It didn't suck, but it wasn't that good. Bioware is one of those developers that was really AA quality and ability, but was given the prestige and praise (and later budget) of AAA developer because they were the only ones who consistently made the type of RPG they specialized in, people were obsessed with a game's potential to be reached in a sequel (that never ended up happening), and pathetic obsession around companions and romance. Technically they were always well behind other AAA companies, and barely better than their AA rivals by sheer virtue of how bland and safe Bioware tended to play it with their titles. In terms of writing they rarely achieved higher than YA book level, and were rightly mocked for the Bioware Chosen One template that they followed.

Bethesda is another AA developer treated as a AAA developer, and just like with Bioware, as more actual AAA developers start to make games in their niche the lack of quality and competence becomes more and more undeniable.

>ME3 is where shit went wrong
Because Drew Karpyshyn only wrote the script for first two games and then he left
And the game was instantly polluted with sudden faggots (literal) on your team telling you sob stories about his husband (imma throw up wait a sec)
BLLLLLEEEEEEERGHHHHHHHH
Ohhh
Ugh
Pah
Hick
So where was I
Right, and then there was a brown gorilla that disobeyed Shepard (the most influential man of the entire humankind, the first human Spectre). Femshep took off after ME3 too. Probably because the new lead writer wanted to be a woman. It led to the appearance of a lot of 3d porn with her which I personally have no interest in, but at least it's something I guess.
All in all ME3 is a shit game
And to think about it, they had that big DLC for ME2. And I thought to myself "holy shit, ME3 will surely be fucking amazing, because this DLC is cool as fuck and improves the already fantastic ME2". But all the shit was scrapped and they had a new story with a pathetic homo Spepard who thinks about a boy for the entire game (maybe he was a pedo) even though he literally saw entire races being massacred before and didn't care. BUT THIS BOY....
Disgusting. Fuck EA. Fuck Bioware. They were dead to me after ME2
>>
This guy in another thread is so right about ME3 and why everyone gave up on the series.
And he totally isn't me.
>>
>>750565013
>Because Drew Karpyshyn only wrote the script for first two games and then he left
That in itself wouldn't be such a huge problem if he had only passed the baton to someone who "got it", but he didn't because they'd be either Casey Hudson or Mac Walters, and i really think ME3 happened where Casey did the thing that some directors do when they don't have someone else make the plot for them. They resort to "logical" similarities, and end up making a plot that... sounds right on one level, but it actually totally isn't going in the same direction as was sort of foretold from earlier. Similar shit happened between Batman Arkham City and Arkham Knight, where you can see the story credit change from "Paul Dini & Sefton Hill" to "Sefton Hill with a bunch of Game Designers". and then the plot is kinda sick in Arkham Knight but it also FEELS like it isn't the kind of plot that would've normally come after City, where it's now EXTRA brooding, and it's like so grim and serious, and Scarecrow is basically a completely different character all of a sudden, and everything is more like the Dark knight movie and not the cartoons anymore.

Casey Hudson already cited his sources for 3. He thought it should be Gladiator, and the whole idea of the boy was that he saw Gladiator and felt like the whole thing of like "The guy thinks dying is victory because he can see his family in the afterlife" and he ACTUALLY wanted that plot for Shepard and the boy that dies.

>>750559297
I think they probably wouldve dialed the wokeness back from veilguard slightly but no way would it have been less than andromeda level. bioware never wouldve made another game not aimed at liberals so i don't mind them shutting down in the slightest
>>
>>750559192
What could've been is another dogshit game from a studio that has been making nothing but dogshit games for more than a decade, and this one would've been even worse since the quality of Bioware games has somehow continued to slip despite already being dogshit 10 years ago.
>>
>>750565226
Bold of you to assume they'd dial any of their gay liberal bullshit back even when faced with financial destitution. Because they fucking didn't put on the breaks for the last game they made and just went even further than what they'd done with Inquisition.
>>
>>750564842
>me 2 > me 1 is a normie take
It's a taste preference. All the ME games are for normies, retard
ME1 had a somewhat shitty gameplay even back then (being a console game does that, and it first came out on xbox 360, mind you), but a grander story (in scale)
ME2 had a way better and more polished gameplay (it wasn't just a console port now), but they had to scale it down and give it a somewhat filler story (which is still fucking amazing with a shitton of great characters) because they wanted to go all in on the next, third game.

It's not like ME2 had a """worse"""" (by your logic) story because they suddenly became incompetent. It was intentional, and they did great at what they planned
>>
>>750565159
I agree. I like 2 or 1 more depending on the mood of the day.
2 is way more pristine and has an even balance between being an action game and an RPG. It really fulfils the mission statement of taking the BioWare RPG but making it into much more of a hybrid action/tactical experience.
ME1 is a delicious RPG where you just happen to be shooting guns, but you have to think of the shooting like combat in RPGs like KOTOR. Accuracy affecting the aiming reticule so badly is not a flaw, it's just them trying to RPG-ify the third person shooter controls, and get the player invested in skills and upgrades. But this does have a problem because the gameplay interface of aiming and shooting does clash with this philosophy, because I'm literally aiming directly at the enemy, so why is it dicerolling the shot?

KOTOR doesn't take skill to execute attacks, it just takes strategy and well timed abilities.

And there are other big differences to cutscene flow and presentation, and the level design.

ME2 also cover a lot more ground (without copypasting environments and cutscene templates) than 1 does, and that's largely thanks to a lot of simplifications they made. And that made ME2 feel actually large to me, despite how small scale a lot of locations feel, and how intimate the scope of the plot is this time.

In the end I just like ME1 for the context it establishes, and the richness of the sort of Dark Soulsy level layout to areas like the Citadel, where there's so many to talk to, but I still appreciate how they did a lot of the same stuff in 2 but without the Dark Souls style complex level layouts and without the same density of "people to talk to" if it means you just get "overall more to talk to" over the span of much more corridors and other small, but still additional hub locations.

I just feel like ME2 is still a very huge game, and its naysayers are too quick to write it off as a "smaller game" or something.
>>
>>750565289
im not certain because, yes, their instincts would no doubt have been to double down, but veilguard to me felt a bit like a turning point where even some non chuds went this shit is fucking gay

This. Mass Effect 1 was pure Bioware RPG kino. 2 started the trend of "Hollywood EXPLOSIONS, DRAMA FIRST, RPG and setting uh never, we're just typing random shit on the keyboard now".

It is the start of the sharp decline in Bioware writing. It is still carried somehow by the lore and setting of the first game, so it isn't as bad as ME 3, but it's the very start of everything going wrong with Bioware.

People just like it because the setting was so well written and so well loved that it could survive for a bit (one game, as it happens) STUPIDITY, DRAMA AND EXPLOSIONS. ME 3 went full retard, ME 2 was just half retard.

Go ahead then, post the explanation ME2 gave for the Reapers suddenly arriving. Why could they suddenly use other mass relays when ME1 said they would be stuck in dark space?
>>

>Why is shepherd on trial

Literally all of this was side plots and unimportant to the main story of mass effect from 1 - 3

Why did shepherd die just to be brought back to life
Why did the normandy get blown up just to give you another one
Why did they have to put shepherd on ice for a couple years to justify a time skip and have your crewmates scattered all over the universe - why not just, DO a timeskip?
Why make Shepherd not be in Alliance military allied with humans anymore and make him work with a terrorist organisation, just to once again make him alliance military and fight against the same terrorists in me3?

All the other new characters like mordin, edi, legion, are just characters you could introduce in me3. Saying "Yeah the plot was completely inconsequential but they introduced new characters that went on for the most part to do nothing of worth because the devs could never be certain if they surivved the suicide mission or not" does not mean me2 was important to the plot.

Ah thanks. So the insanely detailed explanation I missed by not playing ME2 is "they just drove there I guess"
Most of your points are like that by the way.
>why is Cerberus suddenly so important?
They just are
>how did Wrex become leader?
He just did
>how did Liara become the borker?
She just did
ME2 is shit
>>
>>750567584
>Why is Shepard on trial?
DLC
>The Reapers just suddenly arrived? How did that happen?
DLC
>What happened to the original Normandy?
Lmao who cares, just a ship
>Who's EDI and why does Joker like her?
VIs been a thing in the series since 1
>Why is Cerberus so important?
Not explained in 2
>Who is this Illusive Man guy?
Who cares?
>Why is Liara the Shadow Broker now?
DLC
>How did Wrex become the leader of the krogan?
Not explained in 2
>Who's this Mordin guy and why is he so important?
He really isnt, litterally replacable if he dies in 2
>Who's Legion? The geth can talk now?
Geth talked in 1 and obviously could communicate since they worked for/with Saren and her big tiddy mindbroken asari mommy
>Who are all these other characters that Shepard seems to recognize for some reason?
You mean like the iconic ME2 character "gay call of duty man" and his gay shuttle pilot friend?

I think what you meant to say was ME2 DLC added some things, but 99% of ME2 is irrelevant to 3
>>
>>750567813
>yeah none of it mattered except for all these plotlines and characters that carry over to 3
>b-but 3 could have just rushed to introduce all of them!
Stop being retarded.
>>
>>750567905
>plotlines and characters
So you admit that ME2 did absolutely nothing for the actual galaxy-ending apocalpytic threat, it just introduced some characters? Thanks for conceding.
>>
>>750567887
>>750567894
You being dismissive of plotlines/characters doesn't change the fact 2 introduced and developed so many things that carry over to 3.
If 2 didn't exist you would just complain that 3 felt even more rushed and lazy.
>>
>>750567947
The Collectors are pawns of the Reapers no different from Saren and the geth.
We learn about how new Reapers are created and Harbinger is introduced as their leader. We see the Reapers launch their fleet to invade the galaxy.
>>
>>750567971
Okay, so you're saying if the series suddenly made Cerberus go from a niche terrorist group to a shadow organization that rivals the Alliance between games, that would be incredibly rushed and lazy? So ME2 is rushed and lazy then
>>
>>750567971
>less is less than more
these insights brought to (You) by the finest minds on /v/, on the next episode we will cover

>>
Why can't the IP be handed off to another studio like Baldur's Gate was?
>>
>>750568047
>that rivals the Alliance between
Anon ur being disingenious, Cerberus rivals the combines might of all other governments in the galaxy including the SA. Bitch ass Saren needed a Reaper to attack the Cuckadel, Timmy boy just did it.
>>
>>750568026
>without ME2 we wouldn't know that Reapers are artificially created (we already knew this) or that they're coming (we already knew this)
Harbinger is not their leader by the way, why are you dicksucking a game you haven't played?
>>
>>750568047
At least 2 establishes they're wealthy enough to resurrect Shepard, rebuild the Normandy, and have big projects like Overlord and the dead Reaper. 3 went too far giving them an entire army and making the Illusive Man crazy/indoctrinated but that's not the fault of 2.
>>750568048
Seethe more.
>>
>>750559192
It's a conversation in circles with fake gamers. I can sniff them out easy. Some games just have a vibe. NBA2k, Fortnite, Roblox, Fallout, Elden Ring, etc. You know when you're talking to someone that just plays youtube advertisements.
>>
>>750568064
The Baldur's Gate IP was never owned by Bioware/EA, it's owned by Wizards of the Coast so they can license it to whoever they want. Mass Effect is owned by EA so unless they decide to sell it or let someone else develop it it's never happening, and if you look at EA's history of killing IPs, good fucking luck.
>>
>>750568156
>At least 2 establishes they're wealthy enough
I don't even know what kind of fallacy this is
>Cerberus suddenly can literally resurrect people after just being a terrorist group in 1
"This is okay, the game establishes this"
>Cerberus suddenly can wage wars after just being a terrorist group in 1
"Lazy and rushed, the game establishes this but it doesn't count"
>>
>>750568115
>Reapers are artificially created (we already knew this)
Where in ME1 do they explain that Reapers are made from liquified organics? That Reapers have to harvest species to reproduce?
You yourself said that ME1 makes you think the Reapers are trapped in dark space/won't reach the galaxy for many years. 2 makes them a more urgent imminent threat.
>>
>>750568218
Cerberus in 2 was a wealthy shadow organization, not a full on military.
The Illusive Man went from being George Soros to Big Boss.
Hope this helps.
>>
>>750568223
You still haven't posted an explanation for why the Reapers can suddenly arrive faster. Your central claim is that if the Reapers were suddenly there between games, it would make no sense
Well, the Reapers are suddenly there between the end of ME2 and the start of the DLC. Explain that
Explain why they can suddenly use a mass relay.
I will not engage with your deflections further. You claimed that ME2 explains why the Reapers are suddenly there. Post the explanation
>>
>>750568223
Ah so if in ME4 they establish that you also need to add strawberry jam to the organic goop thats (somehow) used to make metal machines you say that jam is very important to the setting?
You are getting really hung up on ulitimately trivial details autismbro
>>
>>750559192
>jrpg disguised as a western space opera
>somehow starfield fullfills it's space travel fantasy better
Do people still talk about this series now?
>>
>>750568278
Again, we see the Reapers launch their invasion fleet. Them moving so fast is dumb, I agree. But them suddenly appearing at Earth like you seem to want would be even more retarded. Shepard delaying their invasion by blowing up the Alpha Relay is a big deal buying the galaxy more time to prepare.
>>
I still can't believe they introduced a human reaper as the final boss and then retconned that they look like the species they harvest one DLC later
>>
>>750568306
You're free to not like it but it's an important part of explaining the Reapers. They're not just robots, they're organic/synthetic hybrids.
>>
>>750568397
So the explanation is "there was a shot of the fleet"
The entirety of ME2 saying nothing of the Reapers arriving quicker is irrelevant, but a 1 second shot at the very end of the DLC adequately explains it?
Elaborate on why ME3 saying "oh shit the Reapers launched an invasion fleet and got here faster" is not valid, but a shot showing it at the end of the ME2 DLC is valid. No more (you)s either way since you're either baiting or retarded
>>
>>750568413
It would have been cool if every Reaper looked unique depending on the species they harvested. But that would have taken too much effort. Easier to just copy and paste squids.
>>
>>750568460
You would hate ME3 even more if 2 never existed. This is a fact. Thanks for understanding.

Yes Mordin and Legion were good characters. I liked them. That doesn't mean ME2 had a good plot or was important to the overall story.

Jesus christ I feel like I'm asking you how you'd feel if you didnt have breakfast this morning
>>
>>750570619
The Suicide Mission and who lives or dies on it are the most impactful choices in the whole trilogy.
>>
>>750570671
The large majority of 3's plot (everything with Cerberus, Tuchanka, and Rannoch) rely on things that were set up in 2. The dark energy plotline was also established before they gave up on it and replaced it with organics vs synthetics at the last second.
>>
>>750570490
In essence they already are. Only reason they were absorbed into Bethesda is Todds laziness and refusing to make TES6 and a Fallout games. Obsidian was only kept because they made New Vegas 15 or so years ago. All their other projects were stopped and they got told to make a Fallout game. And Todd was told to make a TES6. If each of them fails they're kaputt.

>Cerberus, Tuchanka, Rannoch
Explain why these hinged on ME2 events. Becuase you only go to Tuchanka for Grunts loyalty and the Tuchanka plot is about a krogan female and doesnt really change if Grunt is there or not. The bigger impact is whether Wrex is leader because he survived 1 or not.
>Cerberus
The cerberus plot in 3 makes less sense than if it had just followed on from 1. Because they spend the entire time in 2 trying to justify cerberus as a "morally grey, actually not as bad as you think" faction in 2, and even give you several chances to side with TIM. Only for them to become a full "For the evulz" corrupted faction in 3.

Bioware has been done for more than a decade, even if you count Inquisition as a win. Retconned into always existing in 2 even though them having 0 use in ME1 retroactively makes no sense.
>We learn about how new Reapers are created

No, knowing that underneath each Reaper there's a giant robot human or giant robot asari or giant robot volus is so much more relevant and totally doesn't make for a hilariously stupid final boss.
>We see the Reapers launch their fleet
You see 5 unearned seconds at the end of the game of some copypasted Reapers moving towards a Milky Way .PNG with zero change from their state of being between the ending of ME1 and the ending of ME2 because the Collector's plan of taking who knows how many decades if not centuries to build a Reaper had nothing to do with their intended arrival.

Hello newfren. We had endless ME1 vs. ME2 threads before 3 came out
>>
>>750571830
>aura
The Illusive Man was a thoroughly retarded badly written writer's pet. Think about what we know about the Shadow Broker based on ME1: shady info broker, powerful, secretive and knowledgeable. Now think about what we know about Cerberus based on ME1: almost nothing. What little the game shows reveals that they’re evil, stupid and incompetent so a normal player will either be indifferent or hostile towards them, and towards the forced and senseless status quo shakeup for the sake of shock value. Which is bad btw, 'cause the game really really wants you to believe whatever TIM is saying, and the game thinks he's the coolest bloke around.
Shepard was narratively pretty independent in ME1, being able to deny Mikhailovich board the Normandy and hang up on the fucking Council. Come ME1's direct sequel and Shepard has all the liberty he could wish for in this galaxy as a Spectre + a ship + an established crew that's all in on his mission, some because they're Alliance and some because they've become interested in the mission like Garrus or Liara. Instead you're put on a tighter leash. The middle of the trilogy, the game where you should've had the most freedom to investigate and find out *how the fuck* we stop the Reapers, and you're forced to take orders not from the Council, or Anderson, or Hackett, but from the new writer's pet: fucking TIM. Mr. Glowie is the one calling the shots, he picks the crew, he holds the intel, he chooses the missions and come the main quests like Horizon or the Collector Ship he decides when you’re forced to tackle them. What this means is that if you were into the promise ME1 left with: Shepard, the Reapers, the Spectres, the Alliance... then the gap between the player and Shepard in the world widens like a motherfucker, because you *wouldn't* work for the retarded Cerberus; who the hell in their right mind would? Well apparently Shepard, if the script forces his hand. And yours.

The Nomad handles the best but is unarmed and the open world segments in Andromeda have a ton of unmarked side quests that broke the game.

>>
>>750571830
>>750573626
So at no point can you push back by bringing up Cerberus's past crimes, the mess at Project Lazarus, or any of the other reasons Cerberus has such a bad rep. You can’t argue idealism against his practical points. You cannot mention Akuze and how Cerberus murdered your entire squad and gave you the "serious emotional scars" Hackett talks about during ME1's intro. Instead resisting TIM in conversations just makes Shepard come off as a whiny pussy, with lines like "you have to earn the right to talk to me that way". Yeah you sure fucking showed him. Fuck me.
And for what? As huge and as stupid a change as being forced to work for the enemy should require immaculate writing and reasoning to sell it to people. Instead, all this drama; all this disconnect, is in service of a giant sidequest about things made up for this very game that lead nowhere like the donutseel Collectors kidnapping humans and this time around, again because the script dictates it must be this way, the Alliance just... doesn't care. Even though we later see the Collectors running scared because Shepard activated ONE (1) turret at the end of Horizon. It's fucked. Burn it all fucking down. The conversations supposedly 'convince' Shepard, but they're never written to convince the player which is the most important element of the two. What that ends up meaning is that if you think working with Cerberus is a mistake when you first meet TIM, nothing he says is likely to sway your thoughts given the dialog wheel won’t let you express your objections for them to be addressed and the game cares more about the side content where you resolve someone's daddy issues for the nth time.

Why the fuck would Shepard end ME1 with "the Reapers are still coming and I'll find a way to stop them" if they wouldn't show up until he was dead several times over?
>>
>>750573943
No fucking up the Reaper plot so badly in 3 is what doomed the franchise, retard-kun.
>>
>>750573861
ME2 Insanity is easily solved by bringing Miranda + any other tech user + (You) not being a biotic

They wanted ME2 to be a Gays of War clone and overnerfed biotics, thus even turning OP characters like Jack and Samara to be fucking useless

In ME3 they reverted almost every nerf but placed all biotic powers under a global cooldown ensuring the best Insanity squadmates are James + Garrus armed with the N7 Typhoon or Particle beam

well said. they basically do it all again at the beginning of 3 too. let's say you were playing a lunatic full renegade shep and you wanted to agree with the illusive man and try to beat the reapers through all their crazy projects and experiments. mass effect 2 lets you express this to some degree, culminating with the option to save the collector base for tim at the end. well now fast forward to the beginning of 3. Shepard has turned themselves into the alliance for some reason. rogue stealth ship with full freedom, loyal squadmates, gave the illusive man what he wanted. the moment 3 starts this is all just ignored, youve gone back to the alliance just so you can sit in a cell and be their bitch while they deny the reapers exist still and one mission later the illusive man is sending an army to kill you and steal shit on mars with no option to even negotiate with them. also even though Tim was famously behind 7 proxies on every cerberus project he dealt with, he somehow got pretty much instantly indoctrinated between 2 and 3. total garbage.

2 was a masterclass of covering up the immense deficiencies of gameplay and storytelling with a few cool moments. I swear to god everyone wanks off the suicide mission as being the best thing ever but it has almost nothing to do with the rest of Mass Effect, like most of 2 it's just an excuse for something cool to happen while ignoring the actual plot of 1 and refusing to setup for 3 to happen

That's what happened to Mass Effect, and unless they went back to retcon and remake shit, it was gonna be that way forever. That's a large reason why people either wanted BioWare to die, or see these new games fail no matter what. Because the mere canonization of a game taking place "600 years after the game that fucked up the setting/story/lore" is enough for people to wanna strangle something, and personally I would've also rather had nothing.

I want Mass Effect 3 to not exist, so it feels like in order to achieve it, MEA shouldn't have released, and this new project should not go forward with its current template, but it would've salvaged something for me if it wasn't a time-skip and it actually said "look, we decanonized the worst aspects of 3 and the galaxy is more or less in the same state as ME1 or ME2, but it's after the Reaper War so things are a bit effed."

I would've been cool with that, because no matter how ME3 would've gotten made it would've involved a lot of destruction in the galaxy, so that's kind of easy to communicate while holding on to lore otherwise, that seems to line up with the first two games, which were great games in my opinion.

It kinda did but it also oversaturates the "banter" IMO. Realistically, I'm sure on a ship there'd be a lot of jokes between everyone, but I dislike how much of the player-focused design is stripped away in service of basically
>The player walks into a room
>Does nothing at all
>While game hits "Play" on voice acted lines
I prefer ME1 and ME2 where walking around the ship is 100% about Shepard (the player) going up to someone to extract knowledge, story or relationship building from it.
I do care that characters develop relationships to each other, but I actually think the ship hub is an extremely misunderstood method of achieving it.
In their later stages BioWare really just became a "meandering companion slop producer" where the Companion system rests on its laurels, and you just have these boring cuddly conversations between characters, inconsequential to the main plot, and done instead of using the main plot to set up a character plot between some of the characters.
A companion is always either completely unnecessary to the plot, or they're tangential to it, and they don't develop arcs between each other. At some point I think BioWare games got formulaic about this and they never got to the point of realizing that maybe the Companion system isn't actually the "Greatest Thing" about their games, as it's rather self-indulgent, and not very good storytelling, and also kinda not very good player-centric design honestly.

What is starting to get on my nerves are all the Bioware devs coming out now and claiming the game was going to be amazing. They are claiming all this cool shit they were going to let the player do and all that "your choices will really matter this time" crap. They're full of shit though. It's real easy for them to make all these outlandish claims now that the game is cancelled and they'll never have to actually deliver on those claims.

The truth is that Bioware has been trash for a long time now. EA and their new Saudi masters shit canning the whole studio was a rare EA decision that I actually agree with. Now some people will say that it was EA that ruined Bioware. And they're right. However that's irrelevant. It doesn't matter why Bioware went to shit, all that matters is that they went to shit and deserved to be shut down.

Indoctrination Theory is retarded. Literature is littered with books that botched their endings so hard that people insist it was, "all a dream." That's all Indoctrination Theory is, "this ending was so bad that I need to say it never happened, and was either the delusion of a dying mind or a dream." Indoctrination Theory is not smart, it's a stage of grief.

Yes.
But desu at this stage I don't have the story concept for the Rachni's writing, and I want to avoid the Project Variety effect where a character was just added and then they talk at you, but it doesn't fucking matter.

The best thing you can do without violating the pre-existing plot (which is so fucking tempting if it didn't require so much near-impossible work) is to do something thematically interesting. So write dialog that supplements the questions the player sits with in tandem with the main plot's themes.

My ideas so far is that the Rachni are old enough that they carried pre-prothean folklore from the protheans, and in this lore there's another anecdote about how and why the Reapers were fought and never survived, and the situation with the Rachni is also a bit similar to the ending's idea of the Reapers being "secretly non-evil", where you have to trust a previously "evil" ancient and mysterious species to let it roam free, and forgive the past. So I guess I'd like to write something supplemental to the ending long before that part of the game, and ask more questions about the issue of the "cycles" -- basically comparing prior cycles to Shepard's, and pondering if maybe there's a reason why everlasting peace doesn't seem to occur, but maybe this time is different.
>>
>>750559458
Disagree. Shepard's story was really the only story worth telling in the setting. Yeah a lot of the narrative problems in the setting since the conclusion of Shepard's story can be chalked up to bad writing, but I think those stories still wouldn't be nearly as captivating as Shepard's story, even if they did have good writing.

I'm struggling to find the perfect words to describe what I'm feeling about this tweet, but it really does have the energy of a NEET trying to weasel out of an ultimatum their parents gave about getting a job. BioWare has no intention of making a good game, they just want two more years of living off the teat of a bigger company. That's all these people want, an adult daycare to pretend to work at.
>>
Why?
>>
>>750575701
So, I believe the real value of the "setting" is largely just a comparison to human history, same as Dragon Age, with the only difference being that Dragon Age is purely a historical re-examination through fiction, so we have empires and the bible but it's called "Tevinter" and it's called "The Chantry", and Mass Effect is also a historical examination but done through Sci-fi. So the Citadel is actually the European Union, or collective Western Liberal Democracy, and the Batarian Hegemony is Mother Russia, or North Korea, the humans are Mutts, Salarians are asians, and so on.

And in that context there's more to do than Shepard, and one of the really obvious ones to me is a slightly smaller scale story set after 3, with a new protagonist who grows up into the post-war depression where the Citadel is weaker than it's ever been, which gives rise to more galactic fractioning. As Batarians actually survived despite what we thought we knew about them, they have a new and more radicalized leader (like in nazi germany) who will take no more belittlement from foreigners, and they also have a bit of USSR in them, where they form a "New Hegemony", and begin efforts to reactivate and rebuild more Mass Relays and colonies than the Citadel, inside and outside the Terminus region, and as they help people out of suffering more and more species are actually joining them, so by the new game's point the Citadel are weakened good guys, but up against an army of New Hegemonists and there's poverty on Earth, and species who still can't get off, and homeworlds that struggle to rebuild, which gives the new protagonist a nice excuse to shoot some aliens same as always, visit Palaven and Thessia outside the context of total war, and find macguffins that can help everybody rebuild, and ultimately determine the fate of the galaxy's future being in the hands of either the Citadel or the New Hegemony, while fighting this Batarian Overlord, and helping a Batarian squadmate. etc.

>>
>>750575760
I had no plans for Javik in this area, because I think he's a crux, and I didn't really like his inclusion in the story. In fact, most of my playthroughs of 3 I entirely skip his DLC because I think 3 has stronger mysteries if you don't have an actual prothean around constantly telling you how simple everything is. The moment on Thessia where you basically find another Vigil could've been something special, but with Javik around the two of them just start bickering and honestly you don't really learn that much from Javik, other than the similar stuff I mentioned. He's there to foreshadow the ending concept, but a lot of what he says is so on the nose I think the canon is better off without it. Like oh "we also had a Geth called Zha'til and it totally proves the ending about organics vs synthetics is great writing etc." and "Cerberus? In our cycle we also had seperatists who wanted to control the Reapers but were indoctrinated."

I believe Reapers are acting on cycles, and ironically causing parts of the cycles, but the way they wrote Javik is a bit too on the nose for me.

God no. That's the fast track to ruining a setting. People like to point to the few gems that approach made for 40k and Star Wars, but conveniently ignore the mountains of dogshit that far outweigh the gems that approach created as well.

About the only thing further I'd like to see from Mass Effect is to maybe do what StarCraft did and release a tabletop wargame for the setting. For Mass Effect they could even release two: one for ground battles and one for space battles.

Sniper is for open areas which there are many due to the game's more open nature in uncharted planets and MQ locations like Feros or Noveria's outskirts.
Pistol is for cutscenes and weaker combat classes like Adept or Engineer.

2 fucked up the balancing my turn everything into a corridor and introducing SMGs which don't even get a new slot on Shepard's armor, they just clip with pistols.

We don't have nothing, we still have the original trilogy. Also the IP isn't dead, just this one entry to it is dead. EA is still going forward with the Amazon show.

It's such a waste of a good universe. The potential for kino will always be there, in the hands of the right devs.

Hasn't it been stuck in pre-production for years? I wonder if they even have a script ready for it.

It wasn't the former until ME2 retconned them as such, lorelet. You don't get to complain.

The DLCs are worth playing if you ever get the chance, especially Leviathan and Citadel

More coherent than being forced to give an iota of a fuck over 2's derailment of the trilogy, yes.

It's because the characters feel alive. The squad doesn't interact with each other in 2, they all live in their own bubbles in the Normandy they never leave outside of the Jack/Miranda-Tali-Legion conflict cutscene. 3 adds scenes where characters actually move around the ship, you have Garrus calling Liara or Kaidan moving up to Joker, Tali using the bar or James using the poker table. Nobody moves in 2, everything is static, and once you see it you cannot unsee it.

Harbinger takes whatever Sovereign built up and throws it out the fucking window by acting like an annoying 12yo acting superior for the nth time while you BTFO his host body 5 seconds after spawn and he keeps repeating pic related bullshit that the writers probably thought was super ebin cool and not at all tryhard. Harbinger comes across as an absolute joke, and him having 0 lines in ME3 was an upgrade.

People's opinion of James as a character is a litmus test on whether they're easily impressionable or not.
>>
>>750577890
Given it would've made 2 actually worthwhile narratively and taken a load off 3's shoulders in trying to fix what went wrong and being allowed more room to breathe and a clearer direction, I disagree. 2 not being about... anything, MQ-wise, is what led to disaster.
>>
>>750578150
Nah. Many characters and plotlines in 3 needed 2 to establish/develop them.

I hated him initially. After 20 or so playthroughs of the trilogy though, he's kinda grown on me. He's really the only squad mate who doesn't fall for the "legend of Shepard" and just treats him (yes, Shepard is canonically male, I don't give a fuck what anyone else says) like a regular guy. Like he sees and recognizes Shepard's abilities, but also knows that Shepard is still just a human, and humans can fail and make mistakes.

None needed its godawful main quest. You can have a second entry that features Omega or Tuchanka as side content hubs with side missions like Mordin's, which is how both are presented in ME2, but with a main plot that doesn't hinder everything around it past and future.
>>
>>750578636
At worst it's filler the Collectors existing doesn't negatively impact anything. We could have had ten more games like ME2 and 3 would still be disappointing because there's no good way to explain/destroy the Reapers.
>>
>>750559192
>Mass Effect 4,5,6
>Post war power struggles, as each side tries to get the upper hand / reunite / fuck over other races, politics etc.
>Ends in 6 with option to have everything restored, relative peace among citadel races, coming full circle to how things were at the beginning of ME1 basically.
It was that easy.

Andromeda reaction post-announcement, pre-gameplay showcase
Decade long asking for a new entry
Industry-wide constant comparisons to ME when the likes of TW3, Cyberpunk or BG3 rolled around
Normie excitement over ME4's anniunceme in 2020
Reaction and huge success of the Legendary Edition
Favorable reevaluation over time of ME3 (and unfavorable reevaluation over time of ME2 even with normies, >>750573775)
Constant fear and care for ME after Veilguard was a mess
>>
>>750578808
>At worst it's filler
Yeah that's kinda the point. One out of three games, the middle one, being filler killed the momentum and the franchise-wide narrative capabilities.
>the Collectors existing doesn't negatively impact anything
>We could have had ten more games like ME2 and 3 would still be disappointing because there's no good way to explain/destroy the Reapers
Oh nevermind I thought I was discussing something with a normal anon not the ME2 schizo. (You)
