Is there any reason why people collect old video game stuff other than just to collect it? What I mean is there any disadvantages to emulating these things? I emulate but wonder if I'm missing out on anything.
>>750556586>Is there any reason why people collect old video game stuff other than just to collect it?Isn't that reason enough? If its something you played as a child then it gives you a tangible physical connection with your childhood, and that's something you can't get from an emulator.
just let people enjoy things
>>750556586>? I emulate but wonder if I'm missing out on anything.Yeah, it's basically sanding off all the edges and approximating all the finer details. Eliminating some of the senses that are engaged with by playing with the real thing. Suddenly it becomes homogenized as you aren't interacting with any hardware, you're doing the same actions you would take to open explorer.exe. You open a program, click file->open and double click a game rom. You're not feeling the texture of the console, handling the games, the distinct feel of the buttons on the console and controller. Flipping thru the manual or swapping discs, popping a cartridge in and feeling the friction of the contacts, the weight of a light gun in your hand and the tension is stacks up on your wrist and trigger finger. That's one of the senses that gets its stimulation muddled. For collectors half of the fun is in the social element. It's one thing to learn about all of these toys and games and gadgets on forums and youtube videos, but another to discuss them in person and share first hand experience, to meet new people and see new games that come into stores and pick up new titles first hand instead of staring at a black and white windows display on your desktop.Emulation is the casual way of doing this. It's admitting you aren't getting everything but you get that bare minimum of access to the games. You can even dress it up with the baggage of modernity, hacks and high res. Hot dang, you can use a keyboard and mouse to play thunder force 4 or something. Why would you want to? Hey isn't one of the main points in playing old games is to experience the old ways of playing? Ah whatever play on a touch screen, plug in a 360 controller.
>>750556586There's tons of disadvantages to emulating, bro. It's basically the worst way to play any retro game. The refresh rate, monitor size, cpu speed all matter immensely and not a single emulator ever truly gets its right. Some roms are almost entirely different games with how different the timing is compared to running it on OG hardware. What kind of idiot stupid question is this?
>>750556586Owning both physical and digital ensures that if I lose one, I still have the other. And having physical games on my shelf is a more genuine and fulfilling way of expressing passion for my hobby to me than having 100 ROMs and ISOs inside a hard drive folder ever will.
>>750556586Emulation isn't perfect. Its good enough to not be noticeable for most games, but some games have small issues here and there, and a tiny number of games have glaring issues. Then there's retro PC gaming, which has so many obscure and boutique hardware configurations that its basically impossible to create an emulator that perfectly emulates every possible hardware configuration, so you end up missing a lot of features. For PC, if you want the authentic experience, or if you have some obscure game that has some weird boutique midi sequencer supported for its best audio options, then you'll need real hardware to properly get those features.Oh, and retro PC games running at native resolution literally can't be integer scaled properly on LCD displays. It doesn't matter the resolution. DOS games were drawn at 320 x 200 and stretched to 4:3, so if you want that to look right, you'll have to get a CRT and a graphics card that can output plain VGA signals. Hell, I emulate through DOSbox and I still have to do that to get a proper picture.
>>750556946this is 4chan
Tbh emulation is superior. It’s free, it’s more accessible, emulated games look better, the load times are significantly faster, and you save a ton of physical space. A 2 pound hard drive could hold literally tens of thousands of games in it.But idk, there’s something about collecting old games, having the cases there, looking through old game guides and manuals, having that original experience. Just something about it that I really do love. Plus going to old game stores for rare finds is always a massive treat. It’s mostly just a hobby that brings me joy.
>>750556586It's just something to have, like a boomer collecting football jerseys or whatever the fuck boomers collect.I have some old games with physical hardware and I still choose emulation when I actually want to play the games because it's a lot faster than hooking up an old console.
>>750556586Emulation isn't perfect. Old vidya hardware and software appreciates in value so if you're in a bind, you've made money just by holding onto it and can sell it. Collections look nice. Playing with the original controller is a unique experience compared to just hooking up a dualsense or 3rd party controller (and in SOME cases a BETTER experience). And idk, I'm not a piratefag. How's emulation for gimmicky shit like using wiimotes, 3DS 3D, Eyetoy, etc? If I wanted to take my 3DS on the plane and use the 3D, is there an option that emulates that experience without using the real deal for instance?
>>750556586I held onto all of my old games and consoles because they're relics and memories from an era that I can't ever return to, with people I'll never see again. It's less nostalgia for me (but that too) and more sentimentality. A lot of games from various milestones.>the snes i got in christmas of 1991>favorite game i got for my tenth birthday>another game that my non-gaming dad would always play with me>first sleepover game>game i was playing with my first gf>console that i bought with my very first paycheck>last game i ever played with my best friend before he diedList goes on. Everything has a story and I'll treasure them forever. The monetary value is limited, but the sentimental value is through the roof.
>>750556586>celebrating console slopAll old video games are mogged by ai and consoles are irrelevant the shitch poo is fully blown open by ai exclusives and consoles are dead pc won >>750556993>>750557028Seething luddites your precious cucksoles will be scrapped to support SI
>>750556586Some prefer to be more purposeful with what they are doing. By that I mean, they wanna get up and choose a game to play, not have 100+ different options available at a click of a button while sitting down. This is why I still listen to music through records, CD and cassette - I don't have a single subscription for this shit.
>>750558573You can play it natively on pc thanks to claude your just a slave if you keep a console
I waiting for some neckbeard nepobaby to come along whenever I have garage sale and overbuy my old vidya. I have a bin of old video games when individually added up in price comes to about $3800. So when some bald fuck as for video games I pull out this tote and ask for $4000. This has happened three times and one 300 pound fuck would pay $3000 I told him to fuck off.
>>750556586i don't understand trying to collect the gifts that were given to unknown children for their birthdays and christmases and etclike, you may have it, but that wasn't for you, why do you want it? you can just download it and it's not weird then, but you make it creepy by trying to hoard the gifts given to people that weren't you
>>750558735Just have ai recomp it for you, you aren’t a snailcat luddite are you?
>>750558628I don't listen to anyone dumb enough to outsource their thinking to AI and can't grasp basic spelling. Sorry, kiddo.
>>750556586>I emulate but wonder if I'm missing out on anything. There's a certain ritual aspect to having physical stuff.Having a giant library, looking at the cases and artwork, choosing a game, looking at the boxes, taking the cart out, plugging it in, flipping the switch. It sounds ridiculous if you've never experienced it but there is a real and genuine charm about having the actual stuff right there in front of you.In terms of technicalities, emulation is pretty much identical for a lot of systems. 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th generations. Beyond that, things can start to get a bit glitchy in the graphics and sound departments.t. i emulate with CRT Emudriver and CRT TV's, but i've also got a massive collection (which i stopped using once i figured out 240p emulation). However I've recently gotten flash carts though and i've been using them heaps.
>>750557028>The refresh rate, monitor size, cpu speed all matter immensely and not a single emulator ever truly gets its right.Yes they do. Retroarch has an option to output at the EXACT original refresh rate. So does Groovymame. They've had this option for years.Seriously man are you living under a rock?
>>750556586You're an idiot.Next
>>750557686>but some games have small issues here and there, and a tiny number of games have glaring issues.I notice people who repeat this nonsense from Frank Cifaldi never ever give examples. In terms of generations 3-6, you can't tell the difference between emulation and hardware.>if you have some obscure game that has some weird boutique midi sequencer supported for its best audio options, then you'll need real hardware to properly get those features.NOBODY plays stuff like that.
>>750558379>Emulation isn't perfect.SNES emulation is literally, empirically, quantifiably and objectively perfect. And most other old systems from that era are so close to perfect there isn't a person on the planet that can tell them apart from hardware.
>>750557028Kek, imagine not enjoying the benefits of emulation these days. You can fastforward to skip loading screens and long attack animations in turn based games. You can savestate to skip long walkbacks if you die on a boss, or to skip having to redo an easy phase 1 of a boss if you die on phase 2.You can outright skip boring grind sessions by poking RAM.You can skip time-consuming RNG grinding (like getting summon drops in FF4) with cheats. You can use lua scripts to do many awesome things, like drawing maps of levels (very useful for old 2D platformers where every screen looks the same). Recently I told Claude to write me a lua script for Pokemon FireRed that will force encounters with pokemon I haven't caught yet. You know how there's tons of those 1-5% low encounter rates pokemon? You no longer have to waste dozens of minutes to find them. You can force games to run at smoother fps and at progressive resolutions instead of interlaced. You can increase internal rendering resolution too.You have to be retarded not to emulate these days bro.
>>750558379Kek, emulation of most old systems is so good that you can even sync TAS runs made on emulator back on console. Also dumb retard, you can plug the original controller into PC with adapters. I'm playing all emulator games with DualShock2 controller.
>>750556586Tech billionaires are trying to take control of history by buying up all the physical media so they can put it through their AI machines and destroy the originals so the AI will bring up what they tell it to about any subject.
>>750558735Anon, usually people accept less than the individual sum of games they have because they're doing you a favor and buying everything all at once. 3000 is probably pretty fair for a set of games that individually adds up to 3800.
Video game collecting and video game playing are very different hobbies. And there is a clash that confuses people. Because there is a non zero chance someone would actually want to play a real game on their real console. And this is because the market hasn't matured yet.You put quarters in the vending machine. Currency is meant to be spent after all. However, coin collectors exist. You get a new issue from your want list at the comic shop and read it. Comics are meant to be read after all. However, comic collectors exist. However when it comes to gaming the discourse is roughly:>I can't believe bro just spent $1500 on Kuon he too dumbda emulate :skull:
Kinda funny how PCfags need the most coddling and constant reassurance. If you were happy and secure with what you got you wouldnt keep looking over the fence. I know i dont give a shit about what pc peeps do.
>>750559330There's actually no cycle-accurate SNES emulator.
>>750556993Emulating is for people who like gaming, collecting is for failed normies with psychological complexes about mommy not buying the games they wanted as kids
>>750559294>NOBODY plays stuff like that.Nobody you know. I can give two examples, Clint from Lazy Game Reviews and Ross Scott of Accursed Farms. Both of them regularly have issues like these and they act as a case study for the two solutions. Clint buys obscure legacy hardware, while Ross uses Dosbox and its SB16 emulation, and lives with sub par emulation. If you want an example Veil of Darkness is one.Even Doom is a bit like this. It sounds way better with a proper MIDI device like a Sound Canvas than it does with the in built emulation you'd get in GZDoom. I think there are ways to emulate it through DOSbox, but those weren't always there and for a long time the standard was OPL adlib farts for music when you played in DOSbox.I can't speak for consoles, since I haven't really messed with modern emulation software. The last emulator I used seriously was ePSXe. I do hear OG Xbox emulation is still relatively new and has some problems. And of course 7th gen consoles are still hard to emulate even for modern PCs.
>>750558573Known feelsIt's almost certain that I'm never going to play the SNES I still have from my teens again (if I'm in the mood I'll break out the SNES Classic or use NSO), but I just couldn't ever part with it or the games. It's like it's absorbed a piece of my soul
>>750556993The pricing, storing and managing make it unappealing. But I do agree on having the real thing. I used to have a snes and PS2 but gave them away when I upgraded to another console. Horrible mistake
>>750558628You do not understand it's the value ascribe to mundane things like videogames that makes them worth it. Even before AI you could in theory set up an emulator and play any pre-2020 game for free on your pc, so you could play everything you ever wanted. But I bet you didn't.
>>750559991You are a retarded child.
>>750556586CRT+ real hardware is a pretty big deal. It's a transformative experience I would say, but when it comes to the games you can just use flashcarts, hardware mods or custom firmware. It's fine to own a copy of your favorites but wherever the game runs from the original cart or an everdrive it makes zero difference, people who collect games are just hoarders.
>>750565236Why?
>>750559991>You can fastforward to skip loading screens and long attack animations in turn based games.>You can savestate to skip long walkbacks if you die on a boss, or to skip having to redo an easy phase 1 of a boss if you die on phase 2.>You can outright skip boring grind sessions by poking RAM.>You can skip time-consuming RNG grinding (like getting summon drops in FF4) with cheats. When people say you didn't beat a game on an emulator, they're talking about posts like this.
>>750556586Some games still don't emulate perfectly I guess, but overall emulation is far more practical of course. I think to the people collecting old consoles the whole thing is a hobby unto itself, they're not just doing it strictly for the practical purpose of playing the games, they also enjoy the collecting part itself.Personally I just set up a PC with emulators to connect to an old TV and that's how I play games from before the HD era.
>>750556993>Emulation is the casual way of doing this. No, emulation is for people interested in playing video games. You get the emulator and play the video game. Futzing about with old consoles is for people who are into futzing about, rather than playing the video games. Notice how in your whole masturbatory wall of text you don't even talk about actually playing games on your console collection? It's exactly like that, 100% within expectation.
>>750565763>When people say you didn't beat a game on an emulator, they're talking about posts like this.At some point in life you should be asking yourself: is it more important to beat a game legitimately if it involves frustrating or time-wasting moments, or is it more important to use tools to maximize fun? It's very immature to still have a gamer ego past a certain age.
I just kept all my old stuff, never went on a collecting spree for games I didn't wanna play. All of it is scattered and buried across the house, I don't care about displaying shit.
>>750565408I agree this is what I do with my CRT and consoles, I don't own any games, just the flashcarts, or I mod the consoles depending on the generation.Emulation is OK if you have nothing else but real hardware is best.
>>750556586After the government shut off all the power in this area for a few weeks I realized I needed to be able to survive at least three months without any access to the grid/internet. So I bought a bunch of tech that doesn't require the net to function. That's basically it. Some people keep board games in their closet. I keep old video games. Emulation is for when I'm out doing stuff. I grab my chinkheld and just play whatever.
>>750556586For actually playing old games there's a point to be made for playing on original hardware if you want the super giga purist experience, but there's no reason not to use flashcarts. All games in one cartridge, romhacks on original hardware, and avoiding hardware failures like a dead save battery in a game cartridge.
>>750559330Emulation isn't perfect for every system. No one answered my question about 3DS 3D with portability for instance.>>750560141Yeah, I was thinking specifically about my Logitech controller for PS2, not the original Dualshock2. 3rd party controllers for various consoles were waaaay fucking better than they are now, and a lot of those specific grips would need that specific console to be played on. Generic DS2 would probably suffice, but PS2 and Sega Genesis were two consoles that I had a way better time with alternate controllers on. I can't for the life of me remember what controller we got for the Genesis though, but I'd be floored if they made a USB version in this day and age.
>>750567469>is it more important to beat a game legitimately if it involves frustrating or time-wasting momentsIf the developers intended them then yes. If the developers want me to waste hours grinding for a legendary item with a 1% drop rate, then that's what I'll do. To try and subvert that would be me cheapening my experience with the game to make the credits roll faster. The journey is the destination.
>>750556586The first thing that comes to mind is "to play 'em", but they don't
>>750569653You do realize that back then the developers intentionally made games worse in order to artificially extend play time and incentivize people to buy the game instead of renting it for a weekend and beating it?Saying that developers intent matters the most just shows you're a clueless goycattle incapable of critical thought.
>>750556946that's the problem, retro nostalgiafags don't actually enjoy this shit
