belmonts curse wasnt bad but a lot of things just felt off about it.

Instead of another thread debating on if Castlevania has strain too far form its roots or not, how about we just have a Creaking Skull thread?

It wasn't that bad either. It's a 7/10 game.

What's the music genre of the demo area?
https://youtu.be/K0NAbMtkVWw
Hapischord beats? Church Organ Synthwave? Whatever it is I kind of like it.
I do not wish to be spoiled by any of the non-demo music but I won't be playing the full game for a few months, probably even going to wait until next halloween. Also bara Trevor Belmont was fucking hilarious, I liked the background art but the monster and character art was garbage.

I thought it was pretty damn good
Not SotN level good, but certainly better than all the other IGA-vanias
>>
>talos fight
>dubstep starts playing
>timed escape sequence
worst part of the game so far also the actual fight was ridiculously simple
sitting at 91% now not looking forward to those 4 super fights in notre dame
overall I'm liking it surely these last couple boss fights will be good
oh hall of mirrors was also total bullshit
>>
>>750554469
Pretty mid. I just wanted it to be over between 50% and 100% completion. Poorly-designed and balanced game. You can beat Dracula's first phase by spamming the Fist of Talos spell right before the enrage cutscene. He still takes damage. Same spell kills the final form like it's nothing. Also garbage upgrades and platforming. Not to mention combat.
>>
>>750562301
What's with all the shills using this game to shot on igavanias? I've seen a ton of posts like these.
>>
>>750562357
I have no clue, I haven't seen any of those posts. It's how I personally feel though.
It's also not shitting on them. Just stating that I think it's better.
>>
>>750562357
It's the marketer's playbook
>this new game is just as good as the previous games
>this new game is the best of the series
>this new game is better than the previous games
>the older games weren't that good anyways!
You always see this shit with any new entry into a series that hasn't gotten anything for years.
>>
>>750562357
sounds like there's a general consensus that ti's better than most igavanias if what you say is true

i haven't seen many posts to that effect, so if you say it's so a lot of people must believe it
>>
Most castlevania games are pretty mid tbf senpai
>>
it just isn't really a castlevania game. it has none of the hallmarks that make the series what it is. the devs frankly do not understand castlevania. there is a weird parallel here with two Silent Hill games in a row now that have nothing whatsoever to do with Silent Hill. Call it the era of the non-sequel, or sequel in name only
>>
>>750562403
I know anons on /v/ get a lot of shit for the "old good new bad" mindset but this feels like the opposite.
>>
>>750562357
Sounds like you already got your answer. A lot of people must think they're better than non-SotN Igavanias.
>>
>>750554469
3rd best Castelvania aftery Symphony of the Night and Super Castlevania IV
Some of the platorming is too much though, not that they're too hard, but slow the game down a tad too much.
>>
>>750562484
It does but I'm sick of feeling like any discussion on a game I'm interested in is dominated entirely by botfarms on both sides. Like take Valor Mortis, how no one talked about it sans the demo during next fest and how suddenly on release there were frequent threads all starting off the same way. "LOOK AT THIS FUCKING GARBAGE GAME LMAO FLOPPED NO ONE LIKES THIS SHIT LOOK AT THIS STEAM CHART" or "GAME IS BASED AND UNIQUE AND AMAZING AND THE BEST THING EVER WHY AREN'T YOU BUYING IT /v/" and how they all disappeared instantly. How Dragonwilds came out and how all the threads couldn't talk about anything beyond how it's totally better/worse than Valheim/Enshrouded and how those have disappeared too.
No one actually discusses a subject it's just like they're fulfilling a quota for posts expressing like/hate for it and this can be seen anywhere on the internet not just video games.
>>
>>750554469
They should have made either an igavania or a classicvania.
Not a single fan wanted hollowvania.
>>
>>750562479

i don't get the argument that it "Doesn't feel like Castlevania". No three Castlevanias feel like each-other, we got the igavanias, the classics, the PS2 era beat-em-ups, whatever the fuck castlevania 64 was, and the horrible lord of shadows games. I dont know what hallmarks you are looking for but you play as a Belmont, with a whip, you fight death, dracula is the big bad, and you explore his castle. Game is fun I'd say better than SotN because the combat is actually challenging

Castlevania 64 felt like a Classicvania translated to 3D with some exploration-based stages.
>>

>>
>>750562753

you have never made a positive thread in your life, according to, every game is shit and overhyped, and of course, you will never list better games, because in the end, you don't play games at all, never did, never will, the constant spam is a form of vengeance and nothing else.
>>
>>750562753
kek no it didn't
>>
It was pretty good actually.
The soundtrack is subpar and game is too easy when you explore and level up a lot but it was very fun overall. Not a fan of the cutscenes tho.
Some character models may look weird but backgrounds look phenomenal, wished it had native HDR support. Unlocking the whole loading screen was great too, more games should do that.
Anyway still the best CV game we got since Order of Ecclesia. Gonna try the 4 hours achievement, it looks fun since a lot of progression is tied to knowledge.
>>
>>750554469
It was alright. Looks incredible. I didn't finish it. Wasn't clicking with me for some reason.
>>
>>750562783
It's true. Play Castle Wall, Tower of Sorcery, Tower of Execution, even Duel Tower or the Clock Tower. They take the platforming straight from Classicvania. The weight to your jumps, the hazards to avoid including enemies, it's straight from Classicvania. But you probably haven't played enough to realise it.
>>750562808
You haven't actually played any of them.
>>
The whip and all the puzzles were really fun. Sucks to hate fun I guess.
>>
>>750562818
Also it lacks bonus content like Boss Rush or other playable characters like Igavanias had. Also wished for a secret super strong boss or something.
>>
>>750562864
>You haven't actually played any of them.
Iive played all of them that was released in the west, except the og game boy ones and curse of darkness.
and kek no it didn't
>>
>>750562936
lmao no you didn't. You have no idea how the original games play. You're just another retarded casual. If you had played them then you would know how they actually play.
>>
>>750562667
how about as an exercise you look at which of the gameplay systems were streamlined and which eliminated, which introduced or amplified, and what the moment to moment gameplay emphases are. we can set aside the fact that Castlevania is more than the sum of its parts and identify hos this game is just a modern Hollow Knight-like wearing a Castlevania skinsuit very easily. If that is something you enjoy, so be it, but it doesn't make it a proper Castlevania game any more than Silent Hill: Shaft in Scotland is a proper Silent Hill game
>>

Fun is subjective, you pansy ass liberal. I, a metroidvania enthusiast who has played like... easily 59 different metroidvanias, found BC was kinda mid. Its visually quite juicy but the gameplay just did not grab me in the way others did. Think about that next time before you go waving around black and white paint.
>>
>>750563028
you want me to list every single gameplay system that is different because you refuse to analyze the game for yourself? and I'm the retard? How about trying a little critical thinking? I just gave you a plus 15 aura bonus to IQ for the next hour if you want to try it on for size, you're welcome

>>
>>750563238
Not underaged or retarded, retard-kun.
>>
>>750562753
True, actually, and very few 3D platformers actually work that way. Castlevania 64 is one of the few that make you commit to your jumps and will punish mistakes.
>>
>>750563240
>I was just pretending to be retard.
Sure thing, retard.
>>
>>750562753
Castlevania 64 is nothing like a Classicvania. What the hell are you talking about?

I can't even beat the first boss, I'm already level 5 from running back over and over and I still can't even come close. I had no issues with Hollow Knight but I can't do what this game is asking of me. I understand what I'm supposed to do, hit /. jump the cross, knock him when he's hanging in the air, etc, but I just can't execute it.

The early game is brutal then parry trivializes it. Another fun example of great balancing in this game.
>>
>>750563303
Yes it is, have you even played these games? It literally takes concepts from Castlevania 1 and 3 and directly translates them to 3D. Castle Wall and Tower of Execution are the clearest examples.

>>
>>750563307
Dodge? Also break his cross by attacking it. That's it.
>>
>>750563391
Yes it's dumb as fuck they could have easily done save point travel and still had the hall of mirrors as a separate thing but they decided to overcomplicate it for no real reason. I guess it pads out game time which looks good on their end or whatever. Also having both mirrors and charon seems redundant.

I enjoyed playing it and exploring the map to a 100% it, also did the speedrun achievement out of curiousity to see if I can actually pull it off but it was considerably easy since you can "skip" at least two segments if you know where to go.

Yeah. And I overall like it when metroidvanias force you to play without map. It improves your spatial awareness skills.

I still don't really understand what the later-part purple-mirror markings on the map mean. The first part was simple, just go to the mirror that is the cross-section of all of the pointing hands. But the purple mirrors point in weird directions and dont seem to direct you to 1 specific goal.

its pretty great desu
you cant have a positive opinion about it without being called a shill though
my main criticisms were
>the music (which isnt great or even good, but certainly not as bad as people are making out)
>the enemy variety - biggest issue by FAR
>traversal of the map was annoying, i get the mirror teleports, but 1 in each zone (usually the most convenient one too) is useless, and the hall of mirrors in general was kinda tedious

story was great, spells are fun to use/upgrade, game looks lovely, rose is a good protag, exploration was fun. The game was a little easy and lacks replay value, but hopefully DLC will address that.

This is true, actually. In a classicvania, every step mattered, and you were punished for mistiming or misjudging a jump. Same for C64. Classicvania sometimes gave you leaps of faith, or jumps or decisions you had to make based on inference and logic, rather than seeing your next move clearly. Same for C64.

LoD was dumbed down for the casuals that would eventually become IGAvania babbies

10 hours in and i'm forcing myself to play it cause i already bought it but it feels super boring, i don't like the art style, dialogues are dumb and cliche af, combat feels scripted, platforming is unforgiving at times and dumbed down at others. Also, backtracking when you have no fast travel is tedious af
Not that is BAD, but mediocre and generic, like a 6/10

It makes C54 stand out among 3D platformers, because devs continually made the actual platforming more forgiving. Banjo Kazooie, Rayman, Mario Sunshine, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank etc. all gave concessions to the jumps and to the landing by letting the player readjust in mid air or hover before landing. In CV64 you have to commit to your jump and the only concession given is the gravity of the ledge grab. Though that actually gets used against the player in Duel Tower.

i really wanted to like it, i went into it nearly blind and sadly refunded it, it's not a completely terrible game or anything but there are just so many better options these days when it comes to castlemania, bloodstained, two castlevania collections filled to the brim with quality games, it's just not worth spending my time playing this just because it has the name "castlevania" in the title, not mad, not sad, just disappointed

I enjoyed it well enough. It felt to me like a weird mix of the classicvanias with the metroidvanias. Like a middle ground between Rondo of Blood and SoTN. Not really bad persay, but I will agree there was too many platforming challenges and they all felt very samey with the auto kill saws everywhere. Overall the game wasn't bad. The visuals and the voice acting was fantastic. Music was pretty good too. Gameplay wasn't horrid, was just servicable. Would definitely hope they improve on the next one.

The voice actor is the same but the character itself is pretty different. Dracula in the game is pure evil and fully committed to his work, in the show it waffles constantly about whether we should hate him or feel bad for him and it decides to completely shit itself by making him not evil, just depressed and pathetic and commit suicide by Alucard. Then it resurrects him as a human fucking being who is happy and gets to live his life with - yeah frankly I can't stand show Drac, the show is just dogshit, I'm glad it's not canon

So when are you intended to go to the clock tower? I did the library first then got distracted with everything other than the clock tower after I got air dash, now I've fought like 5 other bosses before going back and I'm guessing I've just way overleveled Isaac.
>>
>>750554469
I’ve played all the top rated metroidvanias, and this one is fine but not quite in the upper echelon. The aesthetics, characters, and music aren’t really to my liking. Gameplay is “good”.
>>
>>750574838
>So when are you intended to go to the clock tower?
at any point after beating Death. You can opt to do your full map clear once you beat Death, but there's a few useful things up there that come in handy for map clearing. If you beeline Isaac first, you get Hippogryph/Grav Boots from his arcana which gives you a full screen vertical jump which comes in handy for finding several secrets easier. It's also strong as fuark for combat. There's also the secret-hint ring past Isaac which makes finding them all way easier
>>
When people say it doesn't feel like Castlevania they're talking about the combat design and the platforming. Castlevania titles are about precision. You have tools with defined consistent hit boxes and you're trying to control space and use your limited mobility efficiently. Enemies and platforming segments are never complicated but you have to make every attack and jump deliberately. The platforming sections are in effect, puzzle platformers where enemy patterns are what you're trying to solve.
Curse is very much a modern Metroidvania taking queues from the popular games right now. What it's asking from you is reaction and execution. Weapons have combos and combat is faster. The platforming and exploration is gated by trials where you're trying to move quickly through spikes and wheels using portrait jumps. The way you're meant to engage the games is different and in practice the game is a weaker Hollow Knight.
>>
>>750575540
The best comparison I ever saw about what Belmont's Curse really is at heart is a 2d version of the PS2 games. Combo mechanics, RPG-lite mechanics that feel tacked on just to appeal to Igavania fans, and annoying platforming sections with loose controls that end up being a detriment to the overall game. Fucking Lament...
>>
>>750575072
>hippogryph
Oh, I'm definitely doing that next then. There's still a lot of map I can access, but after I got double jump I just guessed wrongly that Isaac must be story progression that doesn't give shit for movement.
>>
>>750575758
Isaac's movement buff is disguised as an attack Arcana, but the start of that arcana activation is a hippogryph jump which you can cancel out of at any time. There's a few places around the map where this is extremely useful
>>
>>750554469
I liked it allot. It wasn’t a Lost Crown but it was solid. I do think the MC could have had better characterization. It felt like the opening was setting her up to get slapped around and really have to get over herself to get stronger. But that never happened. She wasn’t a girl boss but she just felt one note. I also didn’t like how she never had real back and forth a with any of the fallen foes. It felt like she would just randomly ignore them. I know some people are mad because this isn’t an Iga style game but I still think it’s solid.
>>
>>750574431
Her backstory is Elizabeth Bathory's. Its the same one thats been referenced in all of the games as well. Nothing in the game relates to the anime at all thank god.
>>
>>750562257
The fast travel was fucking aids and that is probably my biggest issue with the game. I don’t mind long backtracks if ultimately you create fast travel ports that make moving around a breeze. I’m playing Lodoss Wars Deedlit and it’s actually crazy mow much better than fast travel is in that game.

Also I agree with the weapon variety. I don’t know why the legendary game weapons were the only ones that had a gimmick attached.
>>
>>750562357
>>750562403
IGAfags are so sensitive, holy shit.
>>
>>750576152
The fast travel was fucking awful. Slowest and most obnoxious fast travel system I've ever seen. Conceptually not terrible, but in execution horrendous.

The legendary thing I get personally, since if you liked an effect on a weaker weapon you'd be gimping yourself. That said, I don't really understand why they even had different weapon levels. You literally could cut out every middle weapon and there would be no difference. Just have the weakest and the legendary, the stat upgrades of everything above one and below legendary felt pointless. ESPECIALLY since you can get the Vampire Killer SO early in the game. I wound up having a legendary weapon before I even got the third tier of any other weapon.
>>
>>750576152
>The fast travel was fucking aids
Whoever at Evil Empire came up with the bright idea of having fast travel be tied to an optional dungeon and integrated into the plot so you can't even use the gimped version of it until halfway through the game needs to be smacked with a rolled up newspaper. Fast travel is a convenience for gamers to not lose their patience with backtracking in a metroidvania, not something you need to justify via storytelling.
>>
>>750576352
You can actually use the fast travel as soon as you get Charon. It just sucks balls cause you're locked into that specific area.

The discourse on whether or not BC is a real Vania is the same rot that plagues the Ninja Gaiden community. BC is basically my first real Vania because I never had access to the franchise. But absolutely nothing that I played in this game leads me to believe it’s not a Vania. Maybe it’s not like the OG’s or the Igas but CV’s identity is all over the place now. Belmonts Curse is a perfectly fine Castlevania, subjectively a great one.

Anons will get mad it’s made by French Toasts instead of honorabru Japanese.

Anons will get mad you have to play as a girl.

Anons will get mad at the “lore” as if Belmonts haven’t been cucked in numerous games in the past as many decades.

Anons will get mad that the game isn’t gearslop and souls maxing like every Iga game.

My main criticism is the dialogue and English voices kind of suck. Unironically wish there was a French dub.
>>
>>750576610
Theres a few things that set it apart from the series, but they're mostly gameplay and level design choices.

1. The focus on platforming challenges/instant death saw traps. Not really a thing or not really used as frequently as they are here. Feels like it takes heavy inspiration from Hollow Knight due to it.

2. Equipment and Loot Drops - Metroidvanias especially typically would have weapons, items, or even spells that'd drop from enemies. BC doesn't have any of that, and takes more from the classicvania approach of enemies are just obstacles and drop things which are mostly used immediately on touch. While there are different weapons and such, you only get a real difference outside of stats in the legendaries and theres less types of weapons than in other metroidvanias. That said, I do think the trinket system makes for more interesting choices as opposed to armor and equipment most times.

3. Movement and Progression- Metroidvanias usually have a few different movement techs or different abilities that allow you access to different areas. While BC does have SOME of that, it doesn't really have as much variety and seems more like call backs than anything.

4. Additional content - BC has none. There often would be other game modes, other playable characters, boss rush, etc.

This is all to say that its still a castlevania, it just is its own flavor of it, as opposed to strictly following the SoTN formula.
>>
>>750577264
I don't give a shit about any of that. What I'm saying is that having spike rooms everywhere on top of a shitty soundtrack and a garbage fast travel system makes for quite a frustrating experience when you want to explore which is the point of these fucking games.
>>
>>750576098

Bathory is a different figure altogether (and is in Bloodlines iirc)
Carmilla was the inspo for the original Dracula novel

People are godawful at games and blame the game and devs for not making a game that hands them progress. /v/ is in no way an exception. Castlevania hasn't hard a truly difficult game in decades with OoE being considered peak difficulty when it's pretty midtier difficulty compared to even something like Rabi-Ribi. It's still easier than SCIV, which was easier than every CV around it. People have to consider this when reading people's gripes with BC. A lot of it is people hating friction in modern games. I played a lot of N+, so it's easy for me to look at the different rooms as new challenges. There are also shortcuts in 95% of the platforming rooms. People just don't want a Castlevania game to challenge them.

I’m so sick of the Hollow Knight comparisons because of anons who are ass blasted by buzzsaws.

Castlevania invented the genre. Any resemblance that Belmonts Curse has to Hollow Knight is because Hollow Knight is a resemblance of Castlevania.

Hollow Knight was not the first game to feature platforming and equipped relics.

If the above is too long, you can’t pogo enemies so it is fundamentally not the same.

Too many copy pasta buzz saw rooms and indie dev tier platforming. The whole story taking place inside Rose's head is fucking stupid too. Music absolutely sucks but that's been discussed enough. I don't think this game did anything to feel like a good "anniversary" title for the series, it was very different and there are much better games to play instead that it was trying to grab inspiration from.
