Faffing about is useful to play with new mechanics, but if you want to quickly solve the puzzles, planning how to approach the problem is better and more rewarding.

I have streaks in which puzzles take seconds or a minute then every now and then I get stuck on a puzzle, ill get real frustrated, leave the game, then come back 15 min later and solve it in less than 5 min.

I do have a bit of a competition with a friend on who does better so I don't ever leave the game idling, which probably contributes to good times in the long run. I'm winning by FAR

It would be pretty awesome to discover the sky world and underworld for the first time. I was spoiled long ago by watching Jon on Twitch, but the full extent of those areas was unknown to me
>>
>>750554912
Sky would be a surprise, but once you're aware there's a 2nd map, then the existence of a 3rd should be obvious if you recall the Exit. You even get a reminder after endgame 2.

Actually thanks for the reminder because I meant to ask about this but I didn't back then.

Did vid related get removed from the game? It's technically not a spoiler, it's just something you can do at that very point in the game, but I did it when I went through that stage, yet it seems to be gone in newer versions? Like you can still *do that*, you just don't see the same thing.

It's strange to me because it seems like THAT is exactly what the deadwaters are? Right when they are mentioned?

>>750554912
It's wild to me that the trailers showed tridimensional maps. I had no idea those were in. Kinda weird to show that kind of thing?

It's not too specific about where you find them, fortunately. It is a pretty big reveal, I'll say.

I just find it hard to believe
>>
>>750555847
It's just a weird coincidence. The ocean plane doesn't extend infinitely, just far out enough that you don't see where it ends. Just a mess up. The reason you can't do that anymore is because it was a mistake they patched.

>>750556119
It's generally really not that bad, a good amount of maps are still 2D in a way, in the sense that you are not really moving stuff vertically much, you are just either stacking or just dropping stuff here and there, it only gets bad when there's some weird as fuck interaction that you are somehow supposed to know and then you waste half an hour because aha you see the very specific way to do this thing you need in this puzzle is THIS which wasn't really mentioned or shown at any point LMAOGETBENT

This is the exception rather than the norm but I'm baffled that Jon Blow, the guy who gets mad at fucking title screens, came up with this shit

A monster's expedition is one mechanic played out extremely thoroughly. It also has many iterations of the same puzzle a few times in a row, which is nice in a quick gratification sort of way. You finish 5 islands and then get hit with a hard one.
OSS on the other hand is many varied mechanics, but there are tons of potential puzzles and mechanic ideas left undone.

Second one is simple
just think of what other levels taught you
and use that

And now i think about it first one is also pretty simple just do the obvious

third one is definitely a brainer
>>
>>750557120
ironically I just figured out the third one, but the first in particular I feel the only possibility is to get the mirror on the lilypad but there's no way to make it go right after I do

whoa, there are multiple solutions to this? I did it by timing a rock just right to be able to pull it down right as I got the extra block of the exit to move in, with a 1 block offset to push the lilypad I was on back right for the other character

>>750557438
That's the intended way, webm is an unintended alternative that requires some precise movement to get the sailor onto the exit.

I had a moment a few days ago where I got home from work and jumped right into the game, opened the catalog and couldn't find a thread. So I told myself "I guess it's just me and the game now" and enjoyed myself for hours.

Don't sweat it, we'll be around, and when we're not, just enjoy your peace and quiet with the game.
>>
>>750557615
Purple and Green mog so unbelievably hard. Orange has its moments but often times can get annoiying
>>
>>750557671
>>750558067
Purple and Orange both share the position of being an obstacle as often as they're a tool, but Purple remains overly simplistic for the entire game if you ask me. Orange gets far more creative with how you apply it, and that endgame level where you crank up a six-way teleporter has to boost it a tier on its own.

>>750557671
I don't remember what altered Green or Cyan do.
>>
>>
>>750558247
I'm not sure if altered green is used, or at least I haven't found it, but altered cyan/strong makes you pull instead of push. This is why your first encounter with it, along with altered red restoring energy gates, makes people think it's an inversion beam[/spoiler[

On the contrary, these were some of my favorite levels in the underworld. That 3 chain down the gate path setup is fucking annoying though
>>
>>750560435
Yeah a handful are "why is this even a puzzle" levels. They could have used the idea here as the basis for something more challenging.

Presumably you just use the orange beams on opposite sides of the wall to skip the crystal stone through it, and then orange beam over to the bottom path? No catch whatsoever here?
>>
>>750560619
You can't skip it through the orange beams, but pretty close.
>>
>>750560619
I'll go further and say that by the time you are in this level, you will already be well-aware of >>750560695 (since that's the point of the area), so you're even more primed to just do what it's asking.
>>
The cuck council will decide your fate.
>>
>>750560695
I meant down. Like you set up the beams along the top and bottom edges of the wall, go back to the stone, get it up top, skip it down through the thing and into the gap. Crystal stones interact with orange beams once they hit them so it would jump through the wall, yes?
>>
>>750560818
No. What's happening will become clear once you get to the areas leading up to this one. Skipping stones stop skipping when caught in the orange beam, since they cannot fall two spaces.

well the art of subtlety is dead, so the overwhelming majority of puzzles today only give you feedback on what not to do. which requires you to make mistakes, so to some extent you are brute forcing the puzzle. i noticed destiny 2 is really bad about this.
>>
Man everything you might do to solve this puzzle is carefully pre-empted and off by 1 so it's impossible.
And why the lily pad? You can't put the crystal on it without losing the one method of moving it. Teleporting onto it is impossible without losing sacrificing the mirror which is obviously needed to get to the end. And it can't go anywhere useful anyway.

Someone convince me not to drop the game 10 hours in, if you feel like it. I'm not a brainlet but I don't have a background with sokoban puzzles and I'm feeling pretty filtered.
>went north, finished all the available heroes puzzles
>went east, finished all the available mirror puzzles
>found a heroes/mirror combined puzzle, couldn't crack it, left it to come back to later
>went south, made some progress with stones but got stuck on one I couldn't work out
>went west, got the first 12 gems but then softlocked myself with the last of 20 gems trapped in an accessible spot
>disgusted at the thought of resetting it and doing the whole thing over from scratch and hopefully not silently making it unsolvable this time, put it down and haven't yet returned

I could just look up guides but that would be missing the point and a disservice to both the game and myself. I'm really put off in particular by the thought that a quarter of the game will be the sort of thing where one unnoticed mistake can cause the next half hour of my life to be complete waste, I guess I respect anyone enthusiastic about that level of gloves-off puzzle gameplay but it just sounds like cock and ball torture to me. And I'm a bit concerned by how long the game is implied to be, I like a bit of puzzling here and there but there's other stuff competing for my time and attention and I'm getting hints I could spend far more time than I would ever enjoy wading through endless layers of puzzles and still have barely penetrated it.

Should I just accept I've been filtered and fuck off and leave the people the game's actually for to enjoy it, or should I give it another chance and do something differently?
>>
>>750582402
Try the west again. Resetting sounds disgusting, but it's really not that bad, and there is a checkpoint once you pick up the power up. You'd be surprised how fast you can get back to where you were. My advice is, don't get too lost in the sauce, pretty much all the gems do not require any sort of crazy moves that involve every beam or something, they are mini self contained puzzles with prerequisites sometimes. It will be very satisfying when you get it
>>
>>750582402
resetting in beams is a matter of ~2 minutes of progress, you just go back to where you get the displacer tool. afaik there are multiple ways to get the gems
>>
>>750582968
>>750583490
Say I do, how long will I be playing before I reach a point where I can feel satisfied that I've "finished" the game and can move on from it contentedly? I've heard talk of multiple stages of endings and people continuing to peel back new layers for hundreds of hours, will the first ending I reach feel rewarding and cathartic enough that I can take it as my cue to clear off without there being obvious important things left unresolved?
>>
>>750582402
>I'm really put off in particular by the thought that a quarter of the game will be the sort of thing where one unnoticed mistake can cause the next half hour of my life to be complete waste
those kinds of puzzles are exceptionally rare to be fair. almost 400 puzzles in and I only encountered like 5 of those so far. The first couple of puzzles in west and south are a big filter and then it gets noticeably easier but still harder than what you encountered north imo. I also felt quite demotivated with south and especially west and honestly if every beamcasters level was like that, I'd probably fuck off too.
>And I'm a bit concerned by how long the game is implied to be
The game is pretty long. With that in mind, I wouldn't push myself to finish if I wasn't having fun.

My suggestion is to pick one of south or west and crack the filter puzzles of that area. I think west, it's the first two that are huge and south it's 1st and I think the 3rd or so and see if you enjoy the next couple few that are shorter and more like what you are used to. Just go in with the mindset that it's going to be a big task but it's fine since worst case scenario, you just drop the game shortly after. If you still feel unsure after seeing the first half a dozen puzzles of the area, you aren't gonna make it.

That puzzle where you follow the dragon's breath through a path of mirrors was cool, especially how you ultimately had to exploit the crossings to backtrack several times. It looks like it's literally on a rail at first glance but somehow they crammed all this complexity in
>>
I caught a bit of Blow's stream and heard different dialog in the Mirror Isles starting levels. Did they get rid of the sultry female voice talking down to him in word salad while he lamented his life of regret and replace it with something else? I had those levels finished already because the demo save carried over.

Outside of being a Sokoban, not particularly. The mechanics are fun and deep, but not to Baba's extent. I don't think anything can be like that, frankly. I do think that the gameplay is designed better than in Baba is You, though.
>how difficult actually is it?

The Witness is great. Check it out.
This game is really good too.
Baba's puzzle design was inspired by Blow's first game, Braid. And it carries on here.
That said, if you're after rule modifiers, this game isn't it. The closest resemblance would be beams, and even then only sometimes...
Overall, I would say this game is much harder than Baba. Or maybe it's just way longer? I'm at 735 levels solved in 168 hours. Staring at a puzzle that looks impossible. Time for bed.

There are two types of puzzle games: Pokemon gyms and Factorio.
The Witness? Pokemon gyms.
SpaceChem? Factorio.
Stephen's Sausage Roll? Pokemon gyms.
Human Resource Machine? Factorio.
Despite having having a puzzle that simulates a binary adder, Order of the Sinking Stars is Pokemon gyms.
Despite being about pushing blocks, Baba Is You is Factorio.

I don't know why others say it's not similar to baba. Baba is my favorite game of all time and there are loads of similarities in my opinion, specifically in level design. They both explore interesting interactions with mechanics then move on. Baba is a bit more hardcore where as order is a lot easier to experiment and spot the "trick" of a level, but even beyond the obvious rule building difference in baba, it's a lot about reverse engineering the combination of moves to achieve your win condition with the pieces given to you on the board
>>
>>750595918
Layer 3 seems to be a grab bag of marginal ideas. Either too simple, or not enough design space, or solutions too convoluted. I find that I either see the trick immediately and breeze through the level, or get stuck with no clue what I need to do to proceed. Or can't be arsed to do another bard dance session. Luckily it's easy to move through the overworld to find new rooms, but I think I'm about to exhaust all my easy puzzles and have to deal with the harder ones soon.
>>
>>750596216

what am i missing here with the bottom goblin. i need him to turn both east and south and i have one rock to achieve this. the only tile that will make him turn south if he's turned another direction for example is the tile two spaces south of him. if i were to put the rock on the southeast tile and stand there, he would turn east, but then have no way to be turned south again.

My first assumption was it was based on it's currently face direction, but that wasn't true, so then I just brushed it off thinking there was an arbitrary tiebreaker priority for certain directions and I shouldn't bother to test what they are since you wouldn't design puzzles around that
>>750603331
idk I'm 500 puzzles in and that was the second bad one (the other being a skipping stones + druid puzzle where the solution is obvious but you assume it doesn't doesn't work because the timing looks impossible)
>>
>>750602837
I stumbled across the trick of this one, and since I genuinely don't think anyone could reasonably logic it out before hand I have no problem spoiling it.

The goblins turn depending on the direction you are facing when you approach them, this is useful for the bottom goblin

I did that. You still need to push the orange beam onto it, quickly run back up to push the gem into its slot, and then run to the last sliver of orange beam to get into the first hole. If you're even slightly delayed you miss the train completely.

more like another 50 hours until you finish the tutorial world and can start the real game
>>
>>750607035
Yeah. I already made the webm so here is the full solution anyways.

One thing I don't like is how some levels, the timing for the wrong solution is sometimes very close that you think it's doable but it's not. They should have padded the time for those a little bit more so you don't keep trying in vain.
>>
>>750607460
There have been a handful that almost tempted you with timing exploits, but those attempts would come up obviously short, and you'd understand that timing wasn't the goal. This actually allows you to zip around trying to push everything into place before finally jumping into the hole. My fault for turning off the beam at the beginning to work through the problem, and then assuming it wasn't supposed to come back on until the beamer was in position.
>>

it's not bard's fault, it's moving something that's also riding above a moving crystal, it ends up moving twice and sometimes it bypasses gravity?
it's more even retarded when sometimes you can move and other times the bard is straight up locked.

same thing happens when you try to move out of a moving lillypad, realtime gravity was the stupidest thing i've ever seen in a grid based game, even with slowmo.
>>
>>750608785
>other times the bard is straight up locked.
This is what tripped me up on this world 3 level. For the longest while I thought that a bard on a crystal couldn't walk the side off because that was the rule—whenever I tried it the game wouldn't let me. But apparently that's just a safety feature for the player (never mind that you can rewind at will) because you totally can if there's a platform. Which in hindsight makes total sense (when you're lined up on two crystals, the 2nd one moves into place for you), but the fact that being able to make the action is dependent on the results of that action is what's unintuitive.
>>
>>750606540
See, I played a lot of both. But I definitely enjoyed Mewgenics way more, and Mewgenics deserves fuckloads of prizes because of the soundtrack alone my god
>>
>>750609483
I was lucky enough to discover this in the process of toying around in this level, at which point I said, my god, I don't even need to be one more tile down. But I don't think the game makes this super clear. Any other places where you move across a patch of water before this, you end up on the last crystal as it touches land.
>>
>>750609483
I'm not sure this is a special-cased safety feature as much as it's that you can't plainly walk onto water, like, ever, so when you take that forward step as the bard and it carries you onto a water tile, the entire transaction gets reversed.
>>
>>750590773
lol
>>
>>750609773
Yeah you may be right. For some reason I thought that starting from map 2 you could walk off edges and drown, but that's probably just for voids.

How does the gemcuck keep winding up in these situations? Does he do it on purpose?
>>
>the queen levels in layer 3

mind legitimately blown
>>
>>750616678
Someone keeps unplugging the green beam.
>>
>>750616856
I was hoping for some Braid inspired levels where rewinding time was necessary to proceed, but I'll take partial resets. It took me a couple levels to realize I was playing as the Queen.
>>
>>750616928
I think that 4-part puzzle with slight variations was Witness-like, at the very least. There are a few sequence puzzles in this style

I knew they were connected, but this whole contrivance was needed in order to un-duplicate before reaching the finish (duplicating yourself earlier was necessary to get the rock over and dupe it)
>>
>>750617630
you definitely did not need to use clones for this level btw
>>
>>750617630
My dude have you seen how fucking slow that thing is? You can easily outrun it
>>
3rd layer puzzle
The fuck do I do here? I figure I need a double beam at the cyan spot, but I have nothing to keep the button pressed. Am I missing something?
>>
>>750617630
why don't you just solve it the normal way
>>
>>750617809
Try stepping on and off the button a few times, and keep your eyes open.
>>

I'm saving this level for the weekend. Probably going to be a multi-hour affair.

These were stunning. I also liked the dragon lily lake and wish it was a larger area. A large multi-screen level in that setting would be a dream.

Good game.
Now, let's discuss: how would these keys interact with mirrors?

I've finally reached the cellular automata level >>750566045.
I have an inkling of what I need to do, but this is enough sokoban for one day.
>>
>>750566045
>>750619073
What I don't like about this level is that once you finally figure out what the solution needs to be like (which is an absurd progression from the previous two levels), getting the correct amount of mirrors of the correct facings in the correct positions is a pain
>>
>>750603007
>a mechanic that isn't explained in any way whatsoever
I figured this out from the mirror goblins and wizard level.

I think the goal is to learn how to read your options. I will just tell you because you made the post and seem to be stuck, but do you see how juicy those two lilypads at the bottom are to go right? What if you worked towards that goal?
>>
this seems so simple but i'm getting filtered anyway
>>
>>750620937
I'm in the endgame-endgame and I still haven't done heroes and stones lol

A bit scared seeing how many people get stuck there
>>
>>750620937
Work backwards from your goal, and figure out where the stones need to go.
>>
>>750621035
holy shit i'm retarded that shit was way simpler than i thought it was gonna be
>>
>>750621092
That will happen a lot.

>>750617809
Finally finished this one. Felt like I was back doing skipping stones #2 but with 5 extra layers, what a ride.
>>
>>750617809
I cheesed the hell out of this part and didn't even use the button and never even went up. There's a huge oversight on this part
>>
>>750623301
Going right? I tried that but was 2 tiles short.
>>
>>750623335
I don't remember entirely but I teleported right and landed on top of the beam caster there and pushed it away from the wall

did you see what was up with that mirror in the east red area bro?
>>

>>
>>750623746
Do you know what the object of this task is? If not, you're in for a treat.
>>
>>750614868
The progression on these is kind of weird. The one that comes after the big one actually illustrates the concept better than this one, though it's still technically present here.
