A revolver will pretty much always be able to chamber and fire longer and more powerful cartridges than semi-autos without compromising handling, balance, and concealability.
There are several revolvers today that fire rifle cartridges that would otherwise need something like an AR pistol or Draco that's much larger and more cumbersome
The Desert Eagle is a semi-auto that manages to cram some magnum calibers into a pistol grip, but it's like holding a 2x4 while a revolver in the same caliber can have a grip of pretty much any size.

A revolver can use stronger cartridges than a semiautomatic simply because you don't need to rely on the gun needing to do all the internal shit to "revolve" compared to your normal 1911-style tilting barrel or alternatives like the Beretta 92. Just solid slabs of steel with a straightforward mechanism. It's basically the limits of mechanical engineering before you have to start relying on novelties of engineering like the Desert Eagle. And at that point you need that kind of power most police forces would just go with a submachine gun or a carbine rifle.

The other half of it is cyberpunk as a genre was built in the 70s/80s and that was when magnum revolvers vs .45 vs 9mm was still a serious debate so it wasn't that odd to still see police using Colt Pythons and the like before it all just became Beretta 92s and Glocks. Hence revolvers still being consistently present. Just like how William Gibson hanging out with stoners in Canada gave the genre a very distinct kind of slang.

Modern revolvers are sturdier than most magazine fed handguns with way more tolerance for grain imbalance, cheap as shit and easy maintenance and part replacement since there's no full on mechanism retardation like with magazine fed and fired, no worries about bullets jamming or the format pulling a P320 into your balls, and easy as shit to build and cheap.
They'll be around forever because convenience survives ages.
In the same way knifing people didn't go out of style even though a knife is as old as the Upper fucking Paleolithic era.
>>
>>750546024

I think that one of the dream goals of projectile weapons is to get rid of ammo.

If we ever have energy weapons, they'll probably have some battery that can fire 50 bajllion shots before the battery needs to be changed.
>>
>>750546024
THE explanation is that whatever super effective cartridges that exist in the future, might not function in a semi-automatic firearms.
You see, semi autos needs use the propulsion of the projectile from the ignition of gunpowder to send the bolt or slide back to cycle to the next round but what if the future cartridges use some kind of special technology where you don’t get those current day gunpowder physics?

The only way I can see it working is if the cylinder itself doesn't move, but rather a belt of bullets rotates around the center like a pulley, with the "motor" being the external cylinder that moves the whole belt
unless there's an internal unpowered "open" cylinder with walls to separate the bullets (and good luck feeding your revolver-belt into each space like a bicycle chain), they'd be going off right next to each other and could theoretically cook each other off and chainfire, and then you'd have 15 or so small explosions going off right in your hand, and no one likes that

Mass Effect did a cool thing where most guns do still use solid ammo, but instead of bullets they shave off a tiny sliver of a big chunk of tungsten and accelerate it using a miniature version of the same tech they use for FTL travel. not really, no. more to the point, they don't rely on ejecting a casing through a port that will get stuck if the casing flies in a weird way, which can will happen even if the gun is well-maintained, resulting in a jam. if a revolver jams, it's because the revolver is literally broken and unusable or because it has some thing physically stuck in it, neither of which happen in the course of normal operation. because they rely purely on the force of the trigger being pulled to operate and not on a combination of gas to move the slide and eject a casing and a spring/gravity to feed more ammunition into the chamber, a revolver that isn't broken or dirty will not jam.
>>
>>750546024
Not really. Revolvers can run bullet types that semi-autos generally can't. Revolvers can cycle piss weak cartridges and pissin' hot cartridges but we're already at the point where semi-autos outpace them in practically every way if you're not poor and you know what you're doing with your ammo selection. I grew up with revolvers so my carry gun is an SP101 loaded with .38 wadcutters but I have a GLOCK on standby in case shit gets real.
>>
>>750546024
Not vidya, but in the anime Psycho Pass government firearms are granted different levels of force or lethality depending on the targets mental score, determinated by an "AI." One agent uses a revolver to bypass this regulation for unique targets, becoming his own judge and executioner. But it's been like a decade since I saw the anime so the details are fuzzy.

what was retarded was that in the second game they decided that guns should need ammo again so they made it so that every gun now needed to change a "heatsink" every few shots, couldn't fire without one, and the heatsinks never cooled down and were therefore not reusable. and literally every gun in the galaxy changed to this new system in like 2 years.

If energy weapons ever become feasible enough for mass deployment, physical projectile weapons will definitely turn into novelty items like swords and bows and arrows within a century. Buying a battery once every 5-10 years would be cheaper than continuously buying ammo.

>If we ever have energy weapons, they'll probably have some battery that can fire 50 bajllion shots before the battery needs to be changed.
That would be the ideal, but realistically batteries aren't magic. A laser with the destructive power on par with a bullet requires a fucking LOT of power. The battery that can produce that kind of power output doesn't even exist in handheld form right now. Even when the tech gets better you're probably looking at batteries with ammo capacity on par with conventional firearms at best.

It's reloaded by replacing the entire drum-cylinder in the game, like some black powder revolvers
>>
>>750546024
At this point it's actually easier to construct an automatic, not to mention ammo being more plentiful that whatever caliber your revolver uses. Revolvers can also technically handle bigger calibers, there are "bear guns" that are basically all revolvers. But then again, that's extremely rare ammo and any rifle basically mogs it to death.
So not really. Perhaps if you make it a miniature grenade launcher or make some kind of super special ammo for it like smart rounds or something.

But I personally think that not every gun is equal, and not all of them should be balanced just because. It's fine to have a few guns that are straight up worse in almost every way.
You could also limit yourself to only using revolvers as a challenge, for example. Have an NPC or two acknowledge that you must be pretty good if you're using a more expensive gun with rare ammo and low RoF and long reload time and your average gamer should get the hint.

>>
>>750546024
Revolvers can handle larger, more powerful rounds than handguns without compromising ergonomics. In a sci-fi setting that has exoskeletons or cybernetic technology, it would make a lot of sense to have stuff like 12 gauge revolvers, too - consider that one of the key selling points of real-life pump-action shotguns is the ability to load all sots of specialized shells (breaching shells, buckshot, slugs, birdshot for use against drones) on the fly.

Compare to Johnny's gun. Magazine is lower and forward, giving it really awkward weight distribution. Very small magazine capacity because huge bullets need big springs to feed reliably. The protrusion of the magazine means a holster is going to be really fucking weird looking and probably be really weird to use if you had an extended magazine or no magazine inserted. The travel length of the slide means trying to use it in a confined space is going to be a nightmare.

Material and mass constraints maybe for a poorfag spacer. Like you're so broke that fancy spess polymers for magazines are too much so you stick with a weapon that has an internal magazine. Energy weapons with rechargeable battery packs are out of your budget too. Automatics are out of the question since ammo convervation is on par with Papers Please levels of budgeting. It is a larger issue than on the ground but self-loading guns already have a quite efficient heat rejection mechanism, the brass case itself. Anyone who has had one drop down their shirt can tell you those fuckers get real hot, and every joule of heat energy ejected with the case is one not saturating the gun mechanism. Also in the absence of an atmosphere, heat transfer between gun parts would be partially curtailed. So the barrel would be very hot but your fire control group would still be ice cold.

A Glock is much cheaper than a revolver.
Otherwise niggers will carry revolvers instead.

Put a screen on it that runs ads and locks the drum until you yell "mcdonalds" but has a very bad mic because it gets blown out by the gunfire.
Have entire gang shootout being just niggers sitting behind cars and yelling mcdonalds into their guns.

It's actually perfect for cyberpunk bullshit.
>extremely oversized ammunition for shooting robots and looking cool
>extremely suspect ammunition, ranging from 200 year old soviet surplus to mecha-bubba's pissin hot cyber-loads to random gonks reloading and just filling the entire case to the brim with powder
>futuristic forensics that can tell your name, address, birthday, and what you ate for breakfast from a single shell casing left at the crime scene
>nanomachine enhanced cyber-wrists allowing you to fire elephant gun rounds out of a pistol without shattering every bone in your body and launching your detached fingers into space
>>
Rule of cool you faggot. Revolvers are extremely cool and reliable
>>
>>750546141
revolvers are actually more expensive to produce than semi-auto handguns for various reasons, mostly down to material cost being lower for the latter.
>>750547140
The revolvers never jam thing is total fudd shit and when revolvers do break they fucking BREAK and are infinitely harder to fix than semi-auto handguns, when a revolver breaks you will pretty much always need a gunsmith to fix it.
>>750546598
This is the only legitimate argument for revolvers vs semi-auto handguns that holds any water, something like 460 S&W simply cannot be chambered in a non-revolving repeating firearm in that kind of form factor, in the real world cartridges like this are mostly meme shit more for having fun at the range but they are real and do exist.
>>750559223
9mm will kill any unarmored target easily, and if you are shooting armored targets 10mm wont change anything.
people do often use 10mm for personal defense against big animals because its an application where the extra kinetic energy stopping power makes sense, its completely overkill for stopping an unarmored human and the shots you miss don't do you any good.

Always thought the ability for a 357. being able to also use 38, was the coolest shit in a vidya. Especially ones that focus on resource scarcity. Giving you two chances to source ammo for it through the loot tables. FNV capitalizing on this further with mods that let you make different permutations on the same caliber just adds more value to the idea. Not saying that semiautos can't do similar things but you don't see it that much in vidya. You can have generic ammo types or special snowflake calibers that only match up with specific designs. Some games do it with 223/5.56mm but it isn't as widespread from what little I've seen.

You can kill anything that has a physical form by hitting it with something going really fast. No matter the technology advancements and the futuristic setting the UNGA GRUG THROW FAST ROCK method is the most reliable to kill.
>>
>>750546024
the IRL reason is good enough, its the best compact package for high power cartridges, there's no way you can make a pistol firing 40-70 gov without putting the rounds in front of the grip, and still have some barrel length to make use of the big round without going the extra mile of puting a stock on it and turn it into a carbine

Now that you mention it, the Human Revoltion revolver was really cool. I really love the removable cylinder magazine, it reminds me a lot of wild west revolvers and I wish real revolvers did something similar. The gold version Burke used was especially based and I wish it showed up earlier in the game.

Lasers operate on light so therefore if it's sunny you can't use a laser gun effectively. Would bring an interesting dichotomy of daylight enforcers using old timey equipment while night enforcers use skin melting laser rifles and bulky heat proof shields.

>>fully analog mechanics let them be serviced by grey market sellers and not get hacked to shit by cybercriminals
This is the one I always think of. Revolvers are simple guns mechanically, getting parts wouldn't require some monitored factory supply chain.

>>fully analog mechanics let them be serviced by grey market sellers and not get hacked to shit by cybercriminals
as opposed to regular pistols of today? nothing stops you from removing the useless hackable bits on your gun, especially if you're going down the path that black markets tinker with weapons
>>
>>750546024
Beam weapons being the standart and shields not being designed to stop projectiles.

revolvers are already obsolete yet people buy them. why would people in the future be any different?
>>
>>750545801
People do not realize just how efficient the whole cartridge+cordite+heavy mass payload is, just compare it, energy expenditure wise, to say a laser.

yeah but you need cellulose and ammonia and sulfur and bunch of other base materials plus you need to set up machines to do the production etc etc
with a laser you just need to wait for the sun/reactor to replenish your ammo
