Some thoughts on franchise horror:Halloween - ran out of story after II, III should have been the future direction of the franchise, but noooo Nightmare - The definition of a movie that was a complete and perfect single movie, stretched out to oblivion but at least 2 and 3 are entertainingFriday the 13th - somehow at least passable throughout, but at its best (IV, btw), it never quite reaches greatnessSleepaway Camp - the thinking man's dumb slasher series. The only shortcoming is the fx are all pretty weakHellraiser - falls off a cliff after II, but goddamn what an amazing setChild's Play - an unparalleled level of auteurship and continuity. Possibly the greatest range of any horror franchiseLeprechaun - the dark horse of the group. Just tremendously and gloriously stupid, yet an incredibly watchable series throughout. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that each movie is a hard reset, down to the powerlevels.Saw - Kind of funny to be ten? Eleven? Movies deep into a franchise perpetually trying to recover from the obvious mistake they made of killing off Jon Kramer the third movie in. Evil Dead - too artistically defined by Raimi to have any validity without his involvement, sorry.Conjuring/Insidious - I'm a Wanslop tolerator, they're comfy, fuck itFinal Destination - strangely consistent, fun and satisfying.
