Whenever I've been to parties, it always feels like I'm in a waiting room. I don't understand how normal people enjoy these things. They just stand or sit around and talk to each other. I keep waiting for something to happen and it never does because it's not supposed to. But I need something to happen because otherwise it really is just like I'm at a doctor's office waiting for my name to be called. The last time I attended an end-of-year work dinner (I don't go to these any more) I spent most of the evening trying to make music in my head out of the droning industrial sounds I could hear coming from nearby roadworks. There was an interesting mix of humming and mechanical grunting that reminded me of the nights I would spend in the storage freezer at the supermarket I used to work graveyard shifts at as a teenager. The fans would hum and blast away and also occasionally hiccup the way shoddy industrial components tend to. I was such an efficient worker that I would often end up taking care of all my tasks and responsibilities for the night in just a couple of hours; the rest of my time I would spend in the freezer with my eyes closed imagining I was an early Arctic explorer. If anyone stuck their head in and asked what I was doing, I would mutter something about re-recording some of last night's faulty stock-take reporting.
