This was a great movie, surprised by how overlooked it is. Not saying its some niche underground film or anything but it's a Brian De Palma film with John Travolta as the lead so you figure it would be considered an 80's classic, but it's barely talked about.
People were not ready for serious Travolta just a few years after Grease and Saturday Night Fever, even the title "Blow Out" sounds more like some fun comedy than a dark thriller.
>>224029161Coulda used more mystery
>>224029161What planet do you live on? It's the most praised De Palma film, the one that even those who don't care for De Palma say is great. It's overrated.
>>224029161>so you figure it would be considered an 80's classicIt is, dear zoomie.
>>224029886> It's the most praised De Palma film, the one that even those who don't care for De Palma say is great.Insane comment when Scarface exists
>>224029950I'm not a zoomer. I'm a zillennial. Sorry, but I haven't heard much of anything about this movie before, and I think you're lying if you say this is considered one of the classics.
>>224029841>Saturday Night FeverHave you ever actually seen the movie? Its an incredibly serious movie.
>>224029988No it's not because a lot of people don't like Scarface.
>>224030008>I haven't heard much of anything about this movie beforeThat's a (You) problem
>>224030029>a lot of people don't like ScarfaceIt's THEE gangster film every normalfag loves regardless of race or background, much more so than Godfather or Goodfellas. Get off letterboxd.
>>224030029Only because its by far his most popular movie, by several magnitudes.
>>224030024With a terrible ending. What the fuck was that. Felt like they didn't know how to close things up
>>224030058I don't think you understood my post. I'm not saying Blow Out is more popular than Scarface. And it's not just letterboxd - it's anywhere there are people into movies (which I guess doesn't really include this board).
>>224030081I'm not talking popularity.
>>224029841>People were not ready for serious TravoltaGod, you're fucking dumb
>>224030138The OP you replied too was talking about popularity, so clearly your post was poorly thought out to begin with
>>224030097>It's the most praised De Palma film, the one that even those who don't care for De Palma say is greatThat would be Scarface. It's the most praised in the sense that every normalfag has seen it and loves it.>a lot of people don't like ScarfaceThere are more people who love it than there are people who have seen Blowout, so Blowout cannot be his most praised film.
>>224030165First off, I can talk about whatever I want. Secondly, he said that it was overlooked and that anyone barely talks about it. This is wrong. It may not be as popular as Scarface, but it receives more consistent praise, and is often favored among those into movies.>>224030168>That would be Scarface. It's the most praised in the sense that every normalfag has seen it and loves it.Only true if you're a minority. Something you want to confess? In the film community it receives a lot of flack for that popularity, and is generally considered a lesser work compared to Blow Out, which has a wider positive reception. >There are more people who love it than there are people who have seen Blowout, so Blowout cannot be his most praised filmBecause I'm not talking sheer numbers, I'm talking proportions. Also, quality - I don't care that some black retards glaze Scarface. They don't count when it comes to the film community.
>>224029161Blow Out and Urban Cowboy are peak Travolta. He really showed his acting skills in both movies, and both are good movies to boot.
>>224029161What are the odds that when Travolta was offered blow out he thought it was something else
>>224030261>Blow Out is more praised than Scarface because Scarface is more popular which means it attracts more negativity which means its less praisedThis reads like an AI post
>>224030008>zillennialNice cope, zoom zoom.
The flip book of the crash took me out.Not realistic
>>224030408Again, I'm not talking sheer volume. By the same token, Vertigo receives more praise than Psycho.>BUT PSYCHO EVERYONE'S SEEN IT AND MORE PPL LOVE ITDoesn't matter. When I'm talking about praise, I don't simply mean any yahoo who says "DAT WAS GREAT, I LOVED IT." I mean people who can form a coherent thought, apply a bit of criticism, and who care about films. This is a tv/film board. You'd think that'd be a given.
>>224029161I always confuse this film and Blow UpThey even have similar plots
>>224029161It's talked about by people who like film. Every kinohead knows it and holds it in high regard as one of De Palma's best and a high point in the paranoid thriller genre. It's normies who don't know it. I'm pretty sure it's the reason Tarantula cast Travolta in Pulp Fiction. You just outed yourself as a casual. No shame though. Watch De Palma's other thrillers like Dressed to Kill, Body Double, Raising Cain, Snake Eyes, and Femme Fatale if you like Blow Out.
>>224030510Durr.
>>224030510Those 2 movies and The Conversation make a good paranoia trilogy
>>224030510I'm pretty sure Blow Out was influenced by that movie
>>224029161The more it got near the ending the shittier it got
>>224030539Enemy of the State is another more recent good one. I like the theory that Hackman's character is the same guy from The Conversation.
>>224029871This, it was kinda boring.
>>224032270I agree, and I'm a big De Palma fan. This film has never worked for me, even though in segments it's got some of his best work as a filmmaker. The Nancy Allen character is so broadly drawn and there's not that much of a relationship developed between her and Travolta. Sure, she's likable, but the big dramatic moment of the movie centers on her death, and it never felt earned. To top it off is the ending. While I love De Palma for his rejection of realism, the ending with the scream always felt like a clumsy metaphor.
Ahem...
>>224032507>the ending with the scream always felt like a clumsy metaphor.Could you elaborate?
>>224032507>the ending with the scream always felt like a clumsy metaphor.I find it horrifying and disturbing. Especially the way Travolta is mentally fucked up by it. It's in his mind forever.
>>224032933That's just how I felt. Some haunting stuff.
>>224030497>Gets brutally btfo and proven wrong>NO NO NOO THOSE PEOPLE DON'T COUNT. STOP THE COUNT!!!
>>224029161It's a slog if you've seen Blow-Up. Pacing is wonky
>>224032507Nah the actual ending is great. No happy ends here bucko, life is horrible and you turn your personal tragedy into a little paycheck and a pat on the back from the client. And that's that.
Blow Out sounds like a 10v1 0% pussy DAP scene by Giorgio Grandi
Faggot who plays the villain has written 3 books about his TDS. 3. Not even joking.
>>224029161Tarantula's favorite movie
>>224029161It was very popular when it came out and I remember hearing about it a lot in the 90s.
>>224029886>>224030168Carrie > Blow Out > Scarface
>>224029161>surprised by how overlooked it is.i watched it cus tarantino says its his favorite
>>224030261Nobody said you couldn’t talk about what you want ya spaz
>>224029161Don't forget the sequel Blow Job where Travolta grows suspicious when a stranger at the midnight gym refuses his advances
>>224029161I've seen it mentioned several times here lately.
>>224034060He just loves everything from the 70s coz that's when he was at his most impressionable. It's just nostalgia.
>>224034120Carlito’s Way > Carrie
Blowout is good, but, now, this is the actual most overlooked De Palma kino: >>224032688
for me it’s Sisters
>>224030510It's the worst movie in the Blow trilogy, honestly
>>224029161i was shocked how much I didn't like it, came across as an afterschool movie. DePalma and Travolta both seemed second rate, maybe its because I watched Thief recently?
>>224034120>>224035467MI > Scarface > Carrie > Blow Out > Carlito's Way > The Untouchables > Body Double > Dressed To Kill > Snake Eyes > Mission to Mars
I didn't like it. But there were some cool parts.
