My idea was at the start of Endgame, Thanos is an absent god separated from all events of the universe. However since he snapped Strange away there's just one chinaman keeping Dormamu at bay and guess what happens? Dormamu enters the universe. Thanos isn't going to have Dormamu undo all his hard work and confronts him only to be defeated and forced to flee. Thanos then recruits the remaining Avengers to fight Dormanu again, but even combined they still can't win. Thanos decides that the only thing worse than an over populated universe is a universe with no population and he unsnaps the rest of the Avengers. Fully united they fight Dormamu a third time and defeat him at the expense of the gauntlet. Thanos deciding that maybe he'll give the universe a second chance. Or some bullshit like that.
