Why do superman films do so bad internationally
>>224015818Superman is a terrible character for the postmodernist, lore obsessed, ten layers of irony writing that modern media is plagued with. He’s fine for a villain of the week style publication or show where he beats the bad guy, teaches kids a moral lesson about being a good person and sells them plastic crap, but was never designed to be scrutinized as a realistic character in a realistic setting.
>>224015818I thought you said "intentionally" This scene is so badass, Superman is lacing up his boots! He's about to put in WORK! Maybe there should be communication between the storyboard and costume people so he can have boot laces, not ron desantis galoshes.
>>224015818Dunno. Has been a trend since Reeve
>>224015818Why can't they just make a period piece Superman film set during the great depression with retrofuturist elements?
>>224015818Why does the all American aw shucks gee wiz hero thing not travel well?
49% and 57% international is pretty good
They hate us cuz they ain't us.
non-American here, the 1978 film was already a modern/slightly-cynical take on an old-fashioned, quaint Americana ideal (i mean that as a positive). you either play it super straight 'n' serious and it's daft/campy, or you go overly-deconstructionist 'isn't this absurd?' then everyone just rolls their eyes.it's an idea, it's been done. it's like remaking Back to the Future. when you can just watch Back to the Future.
Terminal Mutt Fatiguegee golly shucks fake schtick wore off big time
>>224016476>Why can't they just make a period piece Superman film set during the great depression with retrofuturist elements?Probably too expensive. But those late '30s comic book adventures -- where he's a vigilante fighting corrupt politicians and crooked businessmen, not science fiction-style supervillains -- could easily stand a modern update:https://babbling-brooks.com/2018/05/17/the-golden-age-superman-was-a-badass-vigilante-part-2-of-2/
>>224016476>>224018910WATCH THE FLEISCHER CARTOONSalthough i'm a pleb, the golden age stories i've read really are just silly unpretentious fluff. i think it's revisionism to overstate>ackshyually he FOUGHT BANKERSand all that. it's tunnel vision. they're also ignoring that he'd spontaneously say>I know! I'll use my Past-O-Vision to see where those dastardly robbers were last nite!!a period piece could just represent the actual social mores of the time/stories, it's not as if he was punching Chinamen and belittling women every other panel.
