It still sucks compared to LotR

Plebs.

Idk I feel like these movies have 0 cultural impact whereas the books were actually influential and in example we wouldn't have Star Wars without Dune. But what impact did the movies make?

Dune more like
Poope

didnt bother to watch part 2. the trailer for 3 just has zendaya hamming it up looks awful

Truth. Lucas is a hack(no shit), but I really enjoyed the first two movies.

Villenueve already botched it letting studio heads force him to cast Zendaya and also playing Part 1 to safe. He was to scared of having another Lynch disaster after blade runner 2049 flopped at the box office and played part 1 way to safe. part 2 is pretty good if it wasnt for zendaya, but part 1 feels like he's making it as accessible as possible in hopes to get the greenlight for part 2. t times it feels almost like a concept demo meant to prove that Dune is filmable, especially without internal dialogue, rather than the fully confident vision you get in the sequel minus the ugly frowny ladyboy that is zendaya

Maybe if they made an adaptation of GEoD and made it not gay and filled it with stunt casting. Dune-Messiah is environmentalist hogwash with little subtext beyond basic questions about religious moral authority. Herbert didn't start getting to the same richness in world building as Tolkien until the latter half of writing his series.

Absolutely not. LOTR trilogy is one of the most based set of films to ever be created. Dune is just modern slop for fags.

Apart from everything else I wish studios had the confidence to film an entire trilogy from the get go

Not really. Lord of the Rings gave you an entire party of charismatic heroes who you spend the whole time rooting for. Dune is just a bunch of assholes plotting against other assholes, with Zendaya’s scowling blob fish mug as the cherry on top.
>>
>>224015069
It’s actually incredible now knowing how much of pop culture was inspired by Dune, from big stuff like Star Wars all the way to Tremors, Beetlejuice, and Phantasm.
>>
>>224014428
yeh, not trying to say its identical, but Villenueve is trying to bring back the epic scope that movies have been missing for a long time
>>
>>224016795
The books were a staple of sci-fi but the movies have 0 cultural impact

inb4 this thread just becomes "muh no cultural impact!!!!" and zendaya whining like the last 3 different dunc threads this week
i don't really like zendaya in them either but jesus man please talk about something else
>>
I slogged through the first movie and I was so fucking bored I fell asleep in the middle of it. It doesn't help that it has some of the worst sound mixing I've ever heard so you can't understand a fucking word of what anyone is saying.

Yes. It's another poor adaptation of a beloved trilogy.
>>
>>224017768
you had earplugs in your ears if the sound mixing was that bad to you, heard all dialogue clearly both at home and in IMAX just fine
>>
>>224014428
Nowhere near lol. They are still good sci-fi films even if they are questionable on the adaptation part (it really depends what Denis is going to do with Chani in the third film that will make or break it). Lynch's version is more faithful to the book and most of the time far more visually rich than Villeneuve's brown and orange. Lynch's version does suffer from the lack of good VFX for its time though. Also, the casting isn't hit-or-miss with Lynch's version compared to Villeneuve's.
>>
>>224016795
Herbert's novels did for sci-fi what LOTR did for high fantasy -- they are the zenith of their respective genres and the prototypical benchmark through which subsequent works in the genre are judged and are often blatantly copied from.

The DUNC movies, while enjoyable and competently made, do not have anywhere close to the level of cultural impact as Jackson's LOTR Trilogy.
>>
>>224018474
>Also, the casting isn't hit-or-miss with Lynch's version compared to Villeneuve's.
the only really "hit or miss" casting i can think of for villeneuve's films was zendaya, everyone else is pretty much perfect
rebecca ferguson is the perfect jessica, her and alice krige in the 2nd dune miniseries are the best portrayals of her by far— it's such a shame francesca annis was so awful in the role in the lynch movie
in general the lynch movie's casting problem was that some performances were very weak or far too over the top, characters from the book like duncan were just there for accuracy checkmarks when they just show up for like 5 minutes and then die because the movie is cut to pieces
>>
>>224018849
i forgot kynes my bad
but she got a lot more to do than the lynch version, at least, where he just shows up for the harvester scene, then disappears and we're just told he died in a montage, a death scene never having even been filmed
>>
>>224018551
>Herbert's novels did for sci-fi what Lucas did for sci fi
fixed.
At the zenith of sci fi there are people like Asimov, Lem or Verne
>>
>>224016795
vile sand nig culture and snorting sandworm poops to extend thier lives and space travel.

literally thats Dune in a nutshell
>>
Quick name 3 of the characters without saying Jackie Chan
>>
Zendaya is an awful choice for Chani and has only gotten more annoying over time. Everyone else is pretty great, though; Chalamet does a good Paul and everyone else is competent. As far as adaptations go, DUNC is second to the miniseries which I still hold as the zenith of Dune. So yes, I’d say it’s this generation’s LOTR. Do I think it’s as good? No. But I’m too old and bitter to use that judgement in debate.

Also this is very tangential but Eowyn wasn’t cast well. She’s meant to be younger and more blonde. She’s portrayed fine enough but she’s one of the weaker entries.

The lotr trilogy feels like the beatles or Michael jackson. Nothing will ever be as big again, not because nothing is as good (don't let your nostalgia goggles fool you), but because there's so much more to divide any possible fandom's attention and one movie will ever loom as large again for this reason.
That said it'll probably be a trilogy i go back to about as often as i do lotr, so within my limited experience the answer is yes. I read the books while the movies were coming out for both trilogies so im attached. Sorry if my answer isn't provocative or cynical enough
>>
>>224018551
All ive heard is that the first few dune books are good and the rest are retarded. Lotr stuff is all good. Even the samiraillion in a sense. I don't think they're on the same level.
Also lotr pretty much defined what fantasy was. I dont think dune did that

>our time

>>224014428
it could have been if they didn't focus so much on Zendaya's ugly face and story. and of course they're going to fuck up movie 3, because libtards may support Islam, but they don't want to hear about jihad. they're also going to be extremely upset at the fact that Paul is not a hero.
>>
>>224014428
It's lasting legacy will be meme popcorn buckets

No if only because the beat puppies that read the books think it took too many liberties.

People who read LotR pretty much unanimously liked their adaptation, in comparison.

>>224014428
>Stars an ugly nigger
Not even close.
>>
>>224014428
I only saw the first movie, but I don't really get what people got out of it.
>amateurish dialogue
>every scene is so melodramatic it borders on laughable
>everything is desaturated
>Timothy Charlemagne looks bored as fuck
>Zendays displays no emotions
>>
>>224020193
also it just fails to adapt the few visual descriptions in the book

>The Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam sat in a tapestried chair watching mother and son approach. Windows on each side of her overlooked the curving southern bend of the river and the green farmlands of the Atreides family holding, but the Reverend Mother ignored the view.
>>
>>224020193

it looks nice and has a cool soundtrack.
>Timothy Charlemagne
little fuccboi doesn't deserve that name.
>>
>>224020193
the dialogue in the novel is not good as well. in fact i dont think the book is very well written. found it to be very much a sci-fi book fom the 60s or whenever it was published
>>
>>224016827
Because messiah is essentially a postscript for the first book.
>>
>>224014428
It's called DUNC because only an UNC like you likes Dune. Everyone else thinks it's cheap capeshit tier sloppa.
