What's a series/movie that best resembles the vibe of VTMB?
I never got into vampires until I played this game. I never saw blade, twilight or true blood. I only saw dracula untold and I loved the concept of a medieval warrior still being alive and hiding in the modern age. This game made me fall in love with the concept of vamps in the city, blending in society and enjoying everything it offers as a human would, politicians and vampire elites and groups, and ancient artifacts with religious/magical implications.
My friend recommended the strain and I watched the 1st season. It was ok but the vampires are more like zombies for all intents and purposes except for some exceptions. And even the exceptions cannot really hide themselves because they all look decayed. The vamps also drink through an alien vs predator mouth parasite thing. These things combined ruin the vampire fantasy for me, though it succeeds on some elements like ancient and powerful vampires.
I just watched interview with the vampire with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise and it was a really good movie but it didn't hit many of the elements I wrote about. It was a really personal story that mostly explored the philosophy of killing other humans to survive. That could fit in 1 VTMB quest, total.
I know a movie based on the game's setting exists (kindred: the embraced) but everyone online is saying it's garbage.
>>
>>224014388
Probably that new Interview with the Vampire show, though I haven't seen it.
>>
How about Daybreakers?
>>
>>224014412
I started watching the first episode then switched to the movie. Maybe I will watch it, idk.
>>224014438
Trailer looks interesting. Looks more like a zombie apocalypse movie
>>
What about:
true blood
What we do in the Shadows
>>
>>224014412
Speaking of which, might as well rewatch the 90s movie version, it's one of the most beautifully shot films I've seen
>>
>>224014388
Why nobody's ever tried to adapt WoW show?, That franchise is gold mine for new IPs
>>
>>224014572
Anything vampire related is either a shlockfest action movie or a "character drama" for foids where characters just blab about how sad they are for sucking dick/neck.
>>
>>224014541
True blood is what I'm going to end up watching if I don't find an alternative. Reviews say it becomes a slog at some point so I'd rather avoid it. As for the latter, I'm not looking for a comedy
>>224014572
I only know about the setting because of the game, but goddamn it's good. I loved that the werewolves are not some furries but legendary beasts that lurk in the wilds that even vampires fear.
>>
>>224014388
Kindred was a one-season TV show which got cancelled when the lead died in a motor accident iirc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rjik2uRfICU&list=PLTq_T-5H0J9W6V1Eb5gAMijGyzfIWGCpp&index=3
>>
>>224014388
Unironically Twilight movies and also the Underworld movies.
>>
>>224014438
Definitely not. Lacks the whole behind the scenes Masquerade and factions.
>true blood
It also lacks the Masquerade part, the first season had some hint of some deeper undercurrents in the vampire world, but then it just went into angst teenage drama.
>What we do in the Shadows
Not at all, besides the tone of the show being completely different from VtM, the contents of the episodes are not even reminiscent of VtM.
>>224014388
The first Underworld movie.
>>
>>224014618
True Blood is what you want, trust me.
>>
>>224014642
Yeah though the best underworld movie is the one set in the past imo
>>
>>224014644
>>224014642
>>224014665
Sounds like this is what I'm looking for. Trailer looks sick as well
>>
>>224014388
You could try Forever Knight.
The character Lacroix is named in reference to one of the characters from this show.
>>
>>224015254
Far too much 80s cheese.
>>
>>224014388
Anon, you should unironically watch the anime Shiki. It's perfect, you won't be disappointed. I know posting anime is controversial on /tv/ but I think you'd love this show!
>>
>>224015409
Wrong. Shiki is absolutely nothing like VtM.
>>
>>224015409
Lol already have. It's the only anime I consider actual horror. Too bad there aren't more like this. Completely different from what I'm looking for though
>>
>>224014388
Blade & Blade II
Underworld, Underworld: Evolution, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
Near Dark
Cast a Deadly Spell
Call of the Night
>>
>>224014388
>>224014624
Literally the only anon who gave the correct answer. Kindred: the Embraced, if the title didn't give it away, is actually adapted from VtM. Give it a shot, OP.
>>
>>224014388
Near Dark, until the last act.
>>
>>224015506
>It's another "anon can't into reading comprehension" episode
>>
Tsukihime
>>
It's not explicitly vampire-themed, but if you like faction autism and other RPG shit in a Dark Fantasy setting, Lord of Mysteries (high-budget Chinese anime, dubbed and all) should be right up your alley.
>>
>>224015551
I actually did miss that last line, so my bad. But I also think it's retarded to ignore it when it's exactly what OP is looking for. It has its issues (>vampires in daylight), but the biggest complaint I remember from people is that they weren't spoonfed all the details about clans and vampire politics, which isn't an issue even just by playing VTMB. At least watch the first episode.
>>
The Hunger (1983)
>>
Byzantium
Let the right one in
Ginger Snaps
Blade trilogy
Matrix (vibes)
Buffy
Interview with the vampire
Underworld
Daybreakers
>>
>>224015471
If you like Shiki, you should also try Dark Gathering!
>>
>>224014388
besides kindred the embrace and forever knight, which are pretty schlocky, there really is practically nothing like it.
i have a soft spot for angel, it's set in a supernatural LA and it's pretty dark, personal and moody, especially the first couple of seasons. it's not quite like the world of darkness, but it's my personal pick for something that's enjoyable to watch
>do i need to watch buffy before angel
first time i watched it i hadn't seen buffy, but i was broadly aware of it and what it was about, as such i don't feel like i missed too much. i went back and watched buffy a couple of years after angel was over, didn't feel like it added all that much and it had way more inconsistent quality than angel. some stuff was definitely more clever and experimental than anything angel did, but it also had many more episodes that were just bad
>>
>>224015745
>but it's my personal pick for something that's enjoyable to watch
fuck, *my personal pick for something that's BOTH enjoyable to watch AND also kind of like world of darkness
>>
>>224015471
>It's the only anime I consider actual horror.
Aku no Hana
Takopii no Genzai
Mononoke
>>
>>224014412
It's written by 60 year old gay men so all the characters are either flaming homos or "iconic" divas.
>>
Currently watching the first underworld and I gotta say it's pretty spot on. I only wish it had more vampires that weren't part of a faction, living on their own etc, and more interaction with humans.
>>
>>224014388
The literal Vampire the Masquerade TV show?
>>
>>224015788
So normal for vampire fiction then?
>>
>>224015639
Buffy is only good from seasons 1-3 everything else is bad to shit
>>
>>224014618
True blood is highly gay and woman coded but it's done pretty well and just when I was getting tired of it based Russel shows up

>>224014388
Replay VTM:B ad nauseam, get into the ttrpg, etc. Trying to find kino for this feel is a fools errand… that being said, Only Lovers Left Alive had a VTM-esque tone, but if you want a one-to-one adaptation of Bloodlines you’re setting yourself up for disappointment, that game was lightning in a bottle.
>>
The first Blade is probably the closest thing. In its setting, urban vampires go to rave clubs and pose around like they're hot shit. Above them and behind the scenes, a cabal of elder Eurotrash vampires in sharp suits govern the secret international empire. There's a scene where the leader of the funky young vampires is called before the council and reprimanded for hosting rave parties, as they risk drawing unwanted attention to the existence of bloodsuckers. In other words, he has been "breaking the masquerade."
>>
>>224014388
Near Dark is functionally a Sabbat pack rolling into town.
You could say the same of 30 Days of Night.
>>
Just watched underworld.
It definitely had the aesthetic of VTM, even the music, but it was lacking in the "upholding the masquerade" department. Really enjoyed the first half of the movie, it felt like doing missions for the camarilla lol
>>
>>224016505
the way you phrased that made me realize that VTM really is just mafia story beats with crazy bdsm night life theme.
>>
>>224016337
>discover a region where there are 30 days of night
>a veritable vampire playground which we might exploit for decades to come if we are careful
>nah let's just genocide an entire town, ensuring that humans won't settle there again and giving the people in nearby towns a good reason to leave before next year's month of darkness
>it was certainly worth travelling all the way up to Alaska – seemingly on foot – and enduring all kinds of hardship to indulge ourselves for what amounts to a split second on the clock of our immortal existence

I just don't get it.
>>
>>224016519
lmao maybe if you focus on the camarilla house and the chinese vampires
>>
>>224014388
The Originals, maybe? It's a spinoff of The Vampire Diaries but I think you can comfortably skip that if you want to avoid the more Twilighty stuff. Then then another spinoff after that, Legacies, which is more a ripoff of Vampire Academy.
>>
>>224014388
Unironically the first 2 seasons of Angel. Show takes place in LA just like VtMB and Angel is always crawling down sewers, solving shady cases in the city's seedy underbelly much like your character would in the game. Sadly, it gets more soapy in the later seasons and loses the cool atmosphere in the process.
>>
I've been looking for an answer to this question for the last few years, and the answer is NONE, THERE IS FUCKING NOTHING.
Everything is either a garbage, or do not feel like Bloodlines at all.
Interestingly, the stuff that felt the most like Bloodlines (and was actually good), was not even about vampires, it was cyberpunkish.
My answer is play the original Deus Ex and watch Strange Days (1995) and Wild Palms (1993).
>>
>>224016545
Sometimes they're just jerks.

>>224016798
What they did up there in Alaska... it reminds me of that Austrian fella
>>
>>224016545
what? they took a big boat from russia
>>
>>224016754
Wild palms looks fucking bonkers
Strange days doesn't seem to have anything to do with VTM except for the LA criminal underbelly aesthetic. Looks cool though. Also ralph fiennes is in it, damn
>>
>>224016084
A lot of movies like the party vamp trope.
City Of Bones
Dylan Dog: Dead Of Night
>>
>>224016862
Okay I forgot that detail. But that's still a large effort for an incommensurate reward. If they only wanted to rampage in a small and isolated town, I'm sure they could have done that in many places in Russia, and at less risk of getting caught, too, since authorities in Russia are more neglectful than their American counterparts. The unexplained disappearance of a population of American citizens, however small, would make the TV news and demand investigation. But in Russia, possibly not. Rather than sailing to Alaska, the best course for a Russian vampire would be to bribe the corrupt cops to look the other way when these things happen.

>What's a series/movie that best resembles the vibe of VTMB?
None.
>>
Ultraviolet (1998) British TV series.

A police department becomes aware of a mysterious group operating in the shadows. It turns out that the secret cabal of Vampires have become convinced that the human race is going to destroy itself, so they have to take over the world to preserve their food source from extinction.

Surprisingly good, expect extreme moral ambiguity.

>Kindred: The Embraced is an American television series produced by John Leekley Productions and Spelling Television.[1] Loosely based on the role-playing game Vampire: The Masquerade,[1] the series premiered on Fox on April 2, 1996, and ran for seven episodes before it was canceled with one episode unaired on May 9, 1996. Scripts for two other episodes were never filmed.[1]

True blood is pretty good, lots of great characters. But it is not about them hiding/blending in society

Perfect Creature (2006) is an incredibly obscure New Zealand movie set in a steampunk parallel universe where it is an open secret that the upper classes are Vampires.

Really falls apart at the end, but an interesting oddity.

it's Yet Another Buffy Clone, it's knowingly silly rather than grimderp and serious, but Lost Girl is breddy gud. qrd: it turns out fairytale monster-people are real, a succubus woman teams up with a qt goth girl, they start a monster-of-the-week detective agency. it's early-2010s 'u go grrl' stuff but it's fun.

reading World of Darkness sourcebooks as a teenager (and seeing the type of people into it), i thought it was the edgiest, kewlest shit. in hindsight it's pretty ridiculous, so i'll take light fluff over Misery: The Mopening any day.

Is that really how you'd describe VTM? Get real.
>>
>>224020208
in their respective fields, kind of? Cyberpunk was a tabletop RPG that did well by tabletop RPG standards, then became a popular game. Vampire: The Masquerade was the same thing years earlier.

even if the numbers aren't the biggest, you can still tell the executives it has a built-in cult following, and it'll attract NEW audiences because it ticks a lot of boxes for current trends.

really, it depends on whether they stick EXCLUSIVELY to vampires/clans/etc (that's been done), or if it's an ensemble/anthology of the entire World of Darkness (might be a clusterfuck).

>>
>>224020208
no thats ridiculous. even more so 30 years later. but you can point out how it influenced several popular properties that succeeded it and how you can make that a selling point in marketing. just paint it as the original modern vampire setting. whether that is true or not it doesnt matter.
heck if it works for cp 2077 why wouldnt it work for vtm
>>
>>224014388
>>224017171
VtmB couldn't work as a show today and that's just due to the lore. The biggest issue with audiences woud be that VtM vampires don't care about sex. Even 2026 sexless zoomer audiences wouldn't bite a mostly sexless vampire show. VtM vampires might use sex instrumentally for their own advantages, but any kindred that actually enjoys sex is viewed as insane like Jeanette, who is a literal deranged Malkavian. VtM vampires are also probably “too nice” at least insofar as most vampires tend to avoid killing, and will even go out of their way not to kill people because the humanity loss could turn them feral.

One point that is driven home repeated is that vampires are monsters and not reddit superheroes with fangs. The act of the embrace strips away essential human creative drives which is why they don't care about kine sex (their pleasure is through feeding and their reproduction is through the embrace), and explains why Toreadors, despite being a clan made up of mostly artists and actors, are no longer capable of creating art.

They would have to change so many core elements that it would no longer be VtM but just generic gay vampire sex show that bought the rights to the name. Truth is that VtM is a period piece of niche cultural and aesthetic trends from the early 90s through the early 00s and can't really exist outside of that paradigm. Even the creators think so because canonically the entire World of Darkness ends 2004.
>>
>>224020268
>Vampire: The Masquerade was the same thing years earlier.

Not really. Cyberpunk 2077 was a triple-A, mass pre-order, Next Big Thing hypefest surfing on the wave of the Witcher 3's phenomenal success. So powerful was the marketing that it shielded the game from the consequences of its disastrous launch and assured its place as an artistically disappointing but financially certain success. Holes in the ship were later plugged by a DLC campaign and an anime series, both well-received. Some people still disliked the game (me), but every man and his budgie had heard about Cyberpunk and a major new brand had been established.

VTMB, on the other hand, had none of that hype and suffered greatly from its broken condition on release. Eventually Wesp5 patched the game up and helped the game attract a a low-key cult following, but no more than that. No DLC or anime series were to follow. And yeah, I know YouTube video essays on the game have accumulated lots of views, but my guess is that at least half of those views are from people who won't go on to play the game. VTMB has become a staple of the "comfy" video genre, along with Deus Ex, Thief, and Planescape. People put on videos of nerds discussing these games in hushed tones because it helps lull them to sleep at night, not because they have played the game or have any intention of doing so.

>VtM vampires don't care about sex.

i mean it's still a 'sexy' series, to the readers/audience. they have stand-ins for sex because they become asexual weirdos.

Guillermo Del Toro's first film Cronos (1992) is about weird monsters, at a time when vampire movies had become about sexy goths fucking each other. even Twilight, for all its faults, is some
>nooo~! we can't until we're married!

A show about this should really be about this distinction, the vampire newbies think they are reddit superheroes with fangs, but actually they're monsters.

And for real it should be a period piece, set it in the 90s and make it a major plot point that the world will definitely end in 2000.

Underworld even though I think the movies suck. They even got sued by White Wolf for being too similar

Because VTMB is such an atmospheric games, I think most people relate to it via all kinds of different media, and the more vague and open to interpretation it is, the better. which is why you'll probably find a lot of musical pieces that reminds you of it. I don't really feel any kind of movie, series or game really gets close enough to VTMB.

There's tons of great vampire kino out there dough. I'd toss in Near Dark if you want something more gritty and grounded.

One thing that drives me up the wall and please help me anyone reading this. Literally a decade ago i found like a 30 min plus dark rhode piano player just vibing on youtube, and now I can't find it again. I just really associate it with VTMB even though it's not the main music type in the game. Something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PT5YWrQEPmk&list=PLT5HRUo40rPt8vXzzA9-KE_4uVsgZDLrQ&index=6

>>224017553
eh, look how bland superhero movies are compared to what happens in the comics, the characters are reduced to parodies of themselves in order to fit into a movie mold. Sure there are some cape movies I like but overall a lot was lost in the adaptation. It'd be the same for VTM, most clans would probably be reduced to themed goons while you focus on one ''good'' clan with a protag.
>>224020268
nta, imo you'd need a huge videogame hit first then to pitch a series and then build up your franchise little by little. As much as I enjoy the setting, there aren't enough fans out there yet, VTM:B was a cult hit when it came out (I got it for 5 bucks in a supermarket bargain bin a year after release) and all new games since have been less than excellent (I still enjoy some of the visual novels). I don't even know which developer I would have liked to work on the game.

Vampire the Masquerade is good despite the setting, not because of it. It's good because it captures the urban mystique, the night strolls, in this vein it's very similar to Disco Elysium although it's much better written. It is a game about politicking, about (ironically) human nature, schemes, pettiness and some really nasty horrors lurking underneath the surface (snuff plotline was disgusting because it was anchored in reality, monsters were basically costumes). Troika managed to capture the romanticist zeitgeist of late 90s LA perfectly, and there is no comparable work in any other medium. But again, it is not a game about Vampires, and it does not represent both what the setting is like, what White Wolf is like and what the fandom is like. In other words, if you see a Vampire RPG book - don't open it.

Movies:

Near Dark, Collateral, Naked, Diable Probablement

TV Shows:

Riget, MPD Psycho

>imo you'd need a huge videogame hit first then to pitch a series and then build up your franchise little by little.

it's pretty crazy we've ended up THIS way around. what used to happen was a novel/whatever would get a movie, then the movie would get a shitty tie-in game.

wasn't there an older attempt at a Witcher series? but it's clear the new one was because of the success of the games.

>Near Dark

i just watched this a few nights ago, no idea how the hell it passed me by. it's like a GOOD version of Twilight, that's also like a proto-Tarantino flick.

released a couple of months after The Lost Boys, too. 1987 was a good year for modern-day vampire movies.

>>224029513
I liked how they're portrayed as beasts on the run morally warped by their frenzied nature. The movie itself kinda unwraps like a wet fart, rather nonsensically. Good scenes though.
>>
>>224029899
yeah it's not really a 'plot' film. although some of the set pieces are fun (the bar fight, and dodging light beams through bullet holes).

but it's always fun seeing Bill Paxton play Bill Paxton, and it really is just a vibes/mood flick (Tangerine Dream score as people wander around at night).

it's definitely not a World of Darkness style vampire movie like OP was asking for, with a whole world and politics hidden under ours. but it's a damn good vampire movie.

>similar to Disco Elysium although it's much better written.

It reads like a Garth Ennis comic from the early 00s. All edge, no substance.

Being Human is about a vampire society living in secret. There are also werewolves and ghosts, and the show focuses on a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost sharing a house. There's both a UK and a US version

Disco Elysium?

the Garth Ennis comics i've read are definitely edge2damax, Disco Elysium reminded me of something like Kurt Vonnegut or China Mieville. not edgy in the sense of shock value, just postmodern/stream-of-consciousness writing and i don't get it ;_;
>>
>>224030230
Disco Elysium?

I meant VTM, obviously.
>>
>>224030083
It's rather close to WoD because it's a rare modern setting and can even be somewhat Weird West adjacent which is another rare (sub)genre.

>>224030085
There's not much edge though. It shits on Republicans a bit. In VtMB, when you enter Anarch bar, you get called Cammy a lot and you get a lot of opinions about The Man (or The Prince). But you can also figure out that they order kills and that they also are mad because they're not running the local rackets anymore. Every character in that bar is clearly defined, even Damsel has her reasons for being never-Tsundere.

If that scene was in Disco Elysium, you'd get a 30 minute dialogue about history of Anarchism and how Kropotkin would solve the Skid Row crisis but you would not get any character development. It's a very tiresome game as soon as you realize that characters were written around concepts and not motivations.

>It's a very tiresome game as soon as you realize that characters were written around concepts and not motivations.

I think Disco's characters are overly verbose, and some of them are just blunt concepts, like the racist lorry driver, but there is clear motivation among the principal characters. Evrart is not just a speech-maker, he tries to manipulate you, and you, as the player, can go along with his plan or resist it. The story can be interesting if you try to fuck with him, because he will fuck with you in return.

For example, I role-played as a fascist in my first game. Evrart said, "Before we can do business Harry, I need to know if you're a man of the left?"

I gave him a fascist-style reply, saying something like, "No, I believe the strong should rule over the weak."

He said, "Well I suppose that's what we both want, Harry. We just go about it in different ways."

That took me by surprise, and showed more depth in the writing than I expected.

kek for sure I remember during the ps2 era every movie had a tie in game
I think there was a polish series but that might just be bullshit I heard on /v/

>One point that is driven home repeated is that vampires are monsters
Vtm vamps most certainly are not monsters, but humans with superpowers larping as super-duper secret conspiracy societies and receptive to bad sun burn. One of the few vamp media that actually depicts them as monsters is The Strain, where they are ghoulish and parasitic skin walkers, cognitive higher functions is a privilege granted by the brood masters only to those they personally choose and the brood masters themselves have near biblical-mythic origins (born from the severed body parts of a biblical angel)
>>
>>224035840
That anon means monsters as in you'd call an empty, emotionless, manipulative psychopath a monster. And VTM also taps into biblical and mythological origins. See the 13 Antediluvians and the literal Cain. The "bad sun burn" is literally Archangel Michael's holy fire inflicted upon them by another angel.
>>
>>224028700
It's psychological horror.
>>
>>224035840
The premise of The Strain is more interesting than the show itself. Its vampire lore is grim and apocalyptic, but its story focuses on a trite family drama and in most scenes it feels like you're watching a shitty soap opera.
>>
>>224036323
this is way too common. is it just what tv writerhacks know how to write?
>dinosaur show
it's actually a soap opera
>post apocalyptic show
it's actually a soap opera
>alien invasion show
it's actually a soap opera
>space sci-fi show
it's actually a soap opera
>supernatural creature show
it's actually a soap opera

it's cheaper to produce

This was such a letdown.

The ruleset from the game they were based off of took influence from was interview with a vampire.
>>224015788
Vampires have always been synonymous with faggotry. I don't like assuming all these writers from the past were gay, but Bram Stroker was most likely a fag. He wrote fan boy letters to Oscar Wilde and wrote Dracula most likely out of guilt for getting Syphilis from being a homo.

But anyway. Interview with an empire series were smut books where everyone was bisexual and fucking everyone.

>>224020744
> Vtm vampires don't care about sex

There's a lore way of how they can have sex and there's a breed of vampires that specifically love having it.
>>
>>224028739
Cemetery Man is technically a Dylan Dog movie and worth checking out.
