It's kinda funny how Criterion released a giga boxset of Olympics documentaries.
Who was the target audience for this?
>FUCK YEAH, FINALLY OLYMPIC KINOOOOOOO
>>
Sports fans and guys who collect sports memorabilia
>>
>>224012721
Sometimes the IP owner already paid for restoration, digitization, and accompanying booklet and just need a U.S. distributor.
>>

Iirc the nerds on r/criterion were let down by this announcement when it came out

>>224012721
it could be interesting? it would be neat to watch the evolution of a sport and all the major record breaking moments. i remember watching a vid a while back about dick fosbury showcasing his new high jump style during the 68 olympics and really enjoyed it, shit like that would be cool to see.

I wonder if half the living people featured in it and a third of their relatives bought it would they profit? Could be clutch. Are you gonna not buy a documentary you're in/relevant to?

sounds like it could be interesting if you're fan of olympics

Dude did you see the fucking Stanly Kubrick box set with impossible to remove discs
>>
>>224017545
>with impossible to remove discs
Wdym?
>>
>>224017852
Criterion loves making expensive over the top unwieldly boxsets and put the discs cardboard. In some of their previous ones they already had the disc being too loose and fall off so this time they opted to pack the discs so tight that its impossible to jiggle them out without scratching them.
>>
>>224012721
Their fucking shitty ass Kubrick collection box set fucking turned me off this company forever, absolute garbage packaging that damages the blurays.
>>
>>224012721
You people are absolute plebs and it shows.
Official Olympic films are masterworks of cinematography and weaving long stories together. They focus on the human spirit and triumph, they focus on coming together and overcoming. They're often 3+ hours and weave a multi-week competition into an experience that really does remind you what it was like to live it. For Games you never saw, you can feel their flame through these movies, and for those you did, you can relive exactly those moments that made you feel proud to be a human.

Historical content is important and interesting
Sorry it’s not your typical MCU/Star Wars/Breaking Bad level pleb slop with hype moments or whatever
>>
Criterion is such a frustrating company because they are the biggest game in town for releasing *generally* quality presentations of good movies, but they also put out way too many boring woke flicks, they use ai to write copy on their website and probably their disc back covers, and they don't always use the best compression houses for their disc mastering.
>>
>>224012721
>>224014258
it's both a look at how the documentary film has evolved and a look at how the sports themselves have evolved
the trailer for it was God-tier because it was nothing but match cuts of different sports in different eras

>>
>>224019397
You can have historical context without watching decades of films about the Olympics. Personally, I'm not interested in the MCU, or Star Wars, or Breaking Bad. Nor am I interested in this boxset.

Porn is basically free. Why would I pay for it?

What are the boring woke flicks? Their discs have really improved in past two years.

>>224012721
I've watched a few around the last few Olympics. They're neat. It's interesting to preserve and it's not as if they'd put them out individually.

1964 Tokyo Olympics were very significant because they symbolized Japan's de-chuddified reemergence on the world stage. They unveiled the shinkansen and expressway systems for the event. It was epic
>To host such a major event, Tokyo's infrastructure needed to be modernized in time for large numbers of expected tourists. Enormous energy and expense was devoted to upgrading the city's physical infrastructure, including new buildings, highways, stadiums, hotels, airports and trains. There was a new satellite to facilitate live international broadcast. Multiple train and subway lines, a large highway building project, and the Tokaido Shinkansen, the fastest train in the world, were completed. Tokyo International Airport and the Port of Tokyo were modernized. International satellite broadcasting was initiated, and Japan was now connected to the world with a new undersea communications cable.[45] The YS-11, a commercial turboprop plane developed in Japan, was used to transport the Olympic Flame within Japan.[53] For swimming, a new timing system started the clock by the sound of the starter gun and stopped it with touchpads. The photo finish using a photograph with lines on it was introduced to determine the results of sprints. All of this demonstrated that Japan was now part of the first world and a technological leader, and at the same time demonstrated how other countries might modernize.[52] In preparation for the games, 200,000 stray cats and dogs were rounded up and killed.[54]

>>224018942
Does anyone actually buy Criterion blu rays for MSRP? I assume that most just just wait for the 50% off sales. On Amazon a lot of their movies will just always be half off.
>>
>>224020609
>massacring stray cats = high trust society
Also Japan is only a "high trust society" because the shogun forced everyone to behave or commit sudoku, and they just never abandoned those rules during the Meiji Restoration. This is why they still do nonsensical things like bathe naked in front of each other in public and sit on their shins so their legs go numb. Those are traditions created during samurai times so they wouldn't be able to draw hidden swords and kill each other.

I'll buy it and cut all the ass shots and make a summary
But this is the kind of documentary that has no ass shots, mention no ass shots nor the male gaze, even if it's 90% of all the female sport's footage
>>
>>224022798
I'm more interested in being exposited about "why" form would change to
>run faster
>jump higher
>row harder
>skip longer
Since I've always enjoyed watching competitive actions more than judged actions.
>>
>>224022654
Equating the mass slaughter of stray domestic pets that were neglected by humans to that of farm animals bred and raised for food is a dumb vegan argument. Sure they're all animals, but there's something particularly cruel about murdering a defenseless creature meant to be a companion to humans like an innocent cat. With stray dogs at least you can justify that they're scavenger pack animals and actually pose a danger to humans if allowed to run feral.
>>
>>224023433
It was a disgusting act that bears mentioning in encyclopedia articles, because it shows the often cruel toll of hosting an Olympics. It's no worse than the many cities in more modern times that have rounded up the homeless humans and bussed them off to god knows where in order to appear clean, or the stadiums built through basically slave labor with nearly no safety oversight resulting in deaths.

Actually, that's why these sorts of stories that focus on the Games and athletes themselves are so compelling, because it does make all of the bad inflicted by the IOC feel "worth it". And because the competition aims to be chiefly apolitical and free of the woes of the rest of the organizing, it distills it down to what the Olympic Games MEAN rather than what they represent in society. Often criticized for being too fluffy and blind to the world, but it's meant to project a utopic vision of what we as people can be, when we set down our politics, put aside factions, and let human willpower and spirit, sportsmanship and togetherness, prevail.
The state of the modern IOC as a mafia on par with FIFA is a sad thing precisely because of that, but the Games always manage to win out in the end, no matter how controversial or bad it is made out to be, what people always, always remember... Is the triumph and elation of victory, the heartbreak of coming so-close, the fact that the intense reactions of our athletes at the finish are wiped away by the time they get their medals and walk the closing ceremony.

Glad there are other Olympicheads here that have actually watched some of these films.
The Winter Games get slept on, but the docs about Sapporo '72 and Nagano '98 are rather incredible in their own right. Nagano got an amazing IMAX film too, that I don't know has ever been re-released.
