I worked in a deli and rather enjoyed it but got real fuckin' gunshy after slicing off a bit of my finger while cutting some provolone for a lil old lady.
>>
Can I get da flavor of da day sample
>>
>>224011047
Did you get fired or decide to change jobs after scaring the customers with your stubby finger
>>
>>224011946
NTA but I've worked with people who cut themselves kinda bad for a larger company, so not a mom & pop shop. The union made a huge deal about it because modern slicers are designed to be idiot proof if you cut properly. There's a guard between your hand and the product being cut and if you wear cutting gloves like the union wants (no one actually did this at my store) then you should be protected from all but the worst mistakes or accidents. Thing is a lof of the training was basically do you have a pulse, can you watch someone do this for a few customers, can you do this while being watched for a few customers and then the leash comes off. If anything it was far too quick and there's a number of times where you might wanna cut without the guard for certain products like a large roast beef which can be a bitch if you have a blade near the end of the day and it's dull. Or some cheese products can be a bitch with a guard. In those cases you need some decent skills and experience to know what to do and what not to do and wear the dam glove under your vinyl gloves so if you do fuck up you won't take off a finger or slice your hand open.

if someone cut their hand super bad and sprayed blood everywhere behind the counter and then freaked out and ran through the store bleeding everywhere would you shut down the deli for the day?
>>
>>224012683
Sounds fun
Did you eat a lot of free food?

>you should just be selling the turkey, you know, we aren’t selling any ram here

>>
>>224010945
For me it was cart pusher. Super low responsibility, no one expected you to do shit so if you simply put in a C rank worth of effort you looked amazing. And you had an organic reason to not stick around for team building bullshit. Someone has to grab carts. No one else is gonna do your job.

This is where I belong, the world don’t give a shit about me

yes though that was breaking all the rules - you shouldn't have any food or drink in any food prep areas for food safety reasons, cross-contamination and heavens forbid if the company thought your were stealing their food you could be fired on the spot but we all did it anyway and just kept it all in the back where no customers could see it. every morning we'd pull all the sell by today food to be recorded as throw aways or donations, scan them out and they should all either end up in the trash or the dono bin but for example if we were throwing out 3 bowls Tzatziki we'd often keep one after scanning it for trash and just demolish it with any chips or something that were slated to go in the garbage along with it. Some days there would be quite a lot of that since it was a large store so we had everything from small pizzas, egg rolls, all sorts of cheeses and meats and soups that were free game if they got scanned for trash.
it was a risk but we all did it and tell ya the truth, anytime we'd get safety inspections our store managers would come around before hand, all the store managers in the district kept in touch and would pass the word along that inspections were happening, they would ask us to remove all our water bottles and personal items, we'd clean the place up and make it look good for a few hours every few months and then just go back to doing whatever. on the afternoon shift when the store was dead you could basically do whatever you wanted as long as you got your work done. sometimes we'd order delivery and crush a proper pizza or burgers amongst the night crew right in the department and as long as the store managers didn't see us doing anything too risky we'd be fine. being union workers is kinda a double edged sword, on one hand you can't get fired unless you really fuck up and injure someone or steal, on the other no one has any drive to actually be better.at their job once they are in the union so you got some people who coasted

in our company cart pushers were also the jannies, bottle machine and garbage guys and a lot of them were kinda "slow" which always made me feel bad for them since we'd sometimes get the occasional homeless person who would just royally fuck up the public restroom
>>
>>224013319
I loved all of that but I'm pretty sure I'm retarded. I just got left alone all the time. Walking the store all day saying hello and grabbing carts cleaning up stuff from time to time. It certainly helped all my fellow cart pushers were teenagers who hated their job and didn't try at all so again if I was putting in the bare minimum of effort I looked incredible compared to them. Shit when I first got hired literally every other person in the store told me not to listen to my trainer. They all hated him so much. He loved to walk out to the cart corrals in the parking lot and start doing pull ups on them for fifteen minutes. I thought he was fine. He taught me what to do and never got in my way when we worked together.
>>
>>224013386
Hey I think I'm kinda retarded too at times so it's all good, I'm certainly not cut out for white-collar work and have moved between jobs every few years without really ever settling down. If it works for you and puts a paycheck in your hand do it. I got along really with with the majority of my customers and looked forward to seeing them, you get to know people's orders since they often get the same stuff and it was a bright spot on my day. Nothing wrong with that sorta thing. One couple even invited me over for thanksgiving since I had no one to spend it with and they were saying how bored they'd be at their parents house. Meet a lot of nice people in public jobs like that.

I want to stop being a NEET soon and i'm thinking of getting a grocery store job would it be hard for someone mildly socially anxious?
>>

depends on the company/store as some managers at the store level can make or break how a day goes - well run stores often just let the department managers do their thing and only get involved if there's issues. in my experience if you worked stock, dairy or frozen you were largely on your own or in a really small team and if you don't mind the cold frozen and dairy always had work to do in the back areas away from everybody. bakery would come in early, like 5-6am and be done with most of their stuff by lunch on a good day avoiding all the after work crowds. deli/seafood where i worked you had to talk to customers a lot but idk a lot of it was really routine and after like 3 months i went from being kinda a loner to someone who didn't mind talking to other people. that being said i was also a school janitor and maintenance worker in office buildings so i've learned to have some people skills. just don't be a cashier or customer service counter person. some stores have online-order people who do nothing but push carts around and pull orders, pack them up and get them ready for delivery trucks, if you can learn a store layout that's a solid position because you're always on the go and can't stop too long to help others since the delivery trucks have timeslots you can't miss. if you don't mind overnight jobs some companies still offer that, at the very least you'll have no customers except maybe an hour or two at the start or end of your shift. biggest thing is just learn the position you're given and look out for trouble makers and you'll do fine. it's one of the easiest jobs in the world and there's always turnover so positions are always opening up. just don't work front end, to me that's the shittiest job just working a register or being customer service.

Just do overnight stocking
>>
>>224014058
not that anon but that honestly is a dream job for me. I used to clean supermarkets at night and apart from the shit pay it was so much better then my current job
>>
>>224010235
>Hey. Aren't you that wrestler guy? Isn't that shit all fake?
>>
>>224013772
Cart pushing actually helped me get over that a little bit. I mean I still feel it, but I was able to rationalize it in my brain as "I'm being paid to engage with people." so I'd just turn on what I thought was charm and it worked well enough. Most likely everyone just thought I was slow or something. I didn't mind, they were all nice cause I was nice to them first. Plus I was always moving so it's not like I was starting up entire conversations. And I could just say "well carts ain't gonna grab themselves!" and excuse myself.

As for Overnight stocking yeah that's also a piss easy job but I did that too, and personally? I was never more miserable. Everyone on night crew was an asshole, when the morning managers came in they'd get upset with night crew because they hadn't finished stocking and it was just negativity city. I dropped out of it after a month or two. But hey if you want to speak to no one and move boxes for eight hours it's a chill gig.

I had a deli job when I was in my early 20’s and didn’t know how great it was. I remember having to work on Thanksgiving and feeling sorry for myself but on my break I ate Butterball turkey with stuffing and mashed potatoes and gravy and then I watched Wizard Of Oz in the break room because nobody came in after 5:00PM. I should get a job at Jimmy John’s a block away from my house.

Guns N' Roses fucking rules. Crüe. Def Lep.

Then that Cobain pussy had to come around and ruin it all. Like there's something wrong with wanting to have a good time.

I'll tell you something. I hated the fucking 90s.
