What the hell is this thing where the edges of the screen are always blurred in every single shot? Someone more versed in lenses and depth of field explain why so many films and shows look like this now.

uh cinema?

makes it look like what a human eye would see

Digital lens blur I think. Probably a pointless stylistic choice.

Well it's really fucking annoying. Half the frame is just a blur.

There many different ways this effect can be achieved. The cheapest way to just take a normal lens and attach a soft focus filter in front. The filter blurs the edges but keeps the center in focus. There are many different types of and ranges of soft focus filters you can buy. Some barely blur the tiny edges of the picture while others blur much more.

But it's not a shadow, it's blurred.

There's several films I've seen lately where just like the dead center of the frame is clear and everything around it is a smeared whirlwind. I don't see what it adds to have it there all the time. If it was just specific shots focusing on something sure but the whole runtime gets old.

They do it so they can put less effort on extras and background shit. Nobody can tell shit is cheap if its blurry

because they think it looks good, you idiot

it's the latest band-aid to obscure poorly designed shots and clumsy compositions. also look for out-of-focus foreground elements like potted plants, venetian blinds, etc as those are similarly comped in. helps reframe/move center of interest, reduce clutter. throw in some chromatic aberration, gently offset the R G and B transforms and baby you got a stew going
>>
I also read that they use it extensively in streaming productions because it keeps the video bitrate down. Blurry vignette=less visual information to be compressed into the video frame.
