Personally I think it's the wrong movie to deeply delve into the themes. It's more of a zoomer movie that has a thematic nihilism, in contrast to the milennial "everything means something" creative style.

He threw together some shit he thought was cool (and it was). It's a fun ride. But it's not a deep ocean. Some of it works well because of the ambiguity. Does Niki like him or not? Both directions are suggested.

For example he could have cut the "do you want to talk to her?" modified the text of "It's not me!" at the party and the "she's sleeping" and that would be enough to eliminate the possession angle.

But the somewhat unexplained screaming creates a mystery that you fill in with your imagination and works great stylistically.
