The irony of this film, is it didn’t even show some of the issues that made the situation more severe for the British outpost soldiers.
The tifles being used actually had issues with the cartridge cases getting stuck due to heat expansion, so soldiers had to use bayonets to pry each cartridge case out after they had fired a certain number of shots, making loading slower and mire cumbersome.
The same Zulu forces had also recently massacred a larger British force of troops, which had rockets, yet still lost, something not shown in the film.

Theres a prequel film that shows that, Zulu Dawn, but it's shit.

Feels like making revolver rifles made would have made more sense than that single shot trash

The director actually hated the fact that he was forced to comply with apartheid. Although he was legally required to segregate the set, he didn't tolerate overt racism from any of the white cast and crew towards the Zulu actors. There were cases where he actually fired some of the South African extras due to how they were treating the Zulu extras. For many of the Zulu, this was the force time in their life that they had been treated like a human by a white person.

They were a thing but they were expensive, unreliable and the ate through ammunition to such an extent that it would be impractical to have them be a service rifle.

Interestingly enough it was also against the King's orders as Rorke's Drift was in British territory whilst the earlier British defeat at Islandwana was in Zulu territory. It ruined the King's attempt to diplomatically present himself as only defending himself.

>movie ends lamenting the carnage of war and with both sides expressing a sense of martial respect to one another
i donno gaywad that seems pretty timeless to me

Fun fact: The actor who plays the Zulu king in this movie was the great grandson of the actual Zulu king that he's portraying.

looks like a scene from Starship Troopers when the bugs are coming over the base's wall.

There have been multishot rifles, including multishot rifles using a single barrel, going back to the 1600s, at least, with a number of surviving examples.
The Lorenzoni flint lock system, and the Kalthoff Repeating system, (actually issued to troops and used in battle), were two early examples.
Both were highly complex, expensive, and hard to repair, and basically required trained gunsmiths with knowledge of the system, to keep running.
Revolving cylinder firearms are good for pistols, held with one hand, or stocked pistols used for higher accuracy, but for rifles, there are two main issues.
The revolving cylinder to barrel gap looses a certain amount of pressure, and the fap presents a potential injury issue, if the user holds the rifle wrong, and this point is mentioned in practically every Forgotten Weapon video covering this type of rifle.
There were attempts to fix or alleviate the issue going back to the 1700s or earlier, but none of the methods was perfect.
The Nagant 1895 revolver actually fixed the issue with a soecial cartridge case design, but that design was mainly intended to fix the gas leakage issue rather than the exploding gas from the cylinder gap issue, and was likely never applied to rifles, with a higher powder charge cartridge, since plenty of better designs were in existence for a repeating rifle by the 1890s.
There were more effective repeating rifles by the late 1870s, such as Winchester designs, or even thr Soenced repeating rifle used during the US Civil War, but the British chose not to adopt these in large numbers or to adopt the reaping rifles at all.
Rolling Block rifles were fairly affordable, and easy to maintain.
