Honestly, rewatching Manos in theaters tonight after not seeing it since 2017 made me realize it's not as bad as I remember it being; for a while there, it has this sincere artistry behind it that almost came off as intentionally experimental beyond camp.
It's really bad, don’t get me wrong, but maybe not bottom 3 horror of all-time, reserved for excruciating "films" like Skinamarink.

>"Scares" have no effect because I've already assumed all narrative perspectives have been compromised and it's really just the schizo daughter spazzing out
>Movie ends by revealing how the schizo's sister actually died
>Essentially by a trifecta of her being a spiteful cunt, the stepmom being a malicious cunt, and the biological mom being a schizo cunt and hanging herself in her daughter's closet
What exactly was I supposed to take away from this schizo babble?
What's the moral of the story here?

I'm picturing you in a hospital telling the doctors that the last thing you remember is watching the movie Grave Encounters, and them looking at each other concerned and then telling you "Anon... we checked your streaming history. I just watched Elm Street 3 for the first time since childhood, and I never noticed how bad of an actor Heather Langenkamp is in it, but goddammit if she wasn't really cute in it.
>>
>>223993021
I re-watched all of the original Elm Street movies years ago, and noticed that too.
>>
>>223993008
It's not as terrible as the snobs say it is, but it is noticably bad at times because they basically used all the budget on some episodes then threw it to another studio.
It's a fine, though the manga is amazing in comparison. I think the Junji Ito Maniac and Junji Ito Collection anthology series are more fun.

Oh dear. I know that early film material was celluloid, which was highly flammable. It also degrades/decomposes. The slasher flicks are about on par, they just look way worse and the girls aren't as attractive and don't do nude scenes.
The elevated genre is significantly inferior and is far less iconic than the arthouse classics.

I liked it more as a showcase of McCarthy's style and ideas than as a movie. It's kinda fun when you look at all 3 and you draw parallels.

I re-watched "The Thing" (1982). It was OK as a remake of the 1951 film and had great practical effects. Story-wise it's still a simple Ten Little Indians. I don't understand why Carpenter's now all "Heehee, nobody gets the end, even though I put clues in The Thing" either. It is kind of obvious once you think it through. Oh well, 5/10. It loses some points as a few things didn't make sense. Like they say at one point that the thing needs time to perfectly imitate a person. But then it reverts to a weird/creepy state that alarms everybody afterwards? And also it obviously is not one thing, it has to be several to have accomplished what it did, but that never dawns on any of the people at the base? It's day in one shot and night in another, but on Antarctica that takes half a year to change, not a few hours. The thing's final form is obviously MacReady. His ripped clothes were found, and also he was the one who lived alone, away from the others in his shack. We get it. It's the one you wouldn't suspect because he's framed as the protagonist.

I know I nag, but "The Thing" (1982) is still the best version of the three (1951, 1982 and 2011).

Exorcist III is proof that author Blatty is maybe a good book author, but that he knows nothing about screenwriting or directing a movie.

"Hmm, I need to get some exposition to the viewer. I know, I'll just write a scene with a dialogue between George C. Scott and somebody else! Oh, and I'll be doing that for the entire movie! It'll consist entirely of dialogues, just like a radio play!"

Whoever thought this was a good idea to produce deserves a hefty kick in the butt.

>>223998036
I’d probably agree. As much as I enjoyed Hokum, nothing gets me as much as the tent scene in Oddity.

Don't say any more about Oddity please! I'm watching it tonight
>>
I feel like I should rewatch Oddity to see if I still like it the least of the three. I appreciated Caveat's restraint, making it feel somewhat grounded in reality. Oddity was over the top with the whole wood doll idea and everything was a bit too obvious. Hokum had an unlikeable protagonist, but did well in having lots of spooks without wearing out its welcome.

Has anyone else tried watching '31 Dracula with the Phillip Glass score? I like the score quite a bit, a lotnof unnerving sections, but it does feel slapped over the film (which it kind of is, since it was recorded for a re-release). If it was composed and recorded for a different film adaptation, I think I'd be into it more.

Sorry, I legitimately didn't see your comment but it's not a story-ruining spoiler in the slightest by the nature of horror narrative structures.
