>It kills only animals. Let us say I suggest you may be human.
Why didn't the Bene Gesserit kill House Harkonnen with 'The Test'? They're clearly animals.
>>
No one in House Harkonnen was Bene Gesserit, much less a potential Kwisatz Haderach. The BG don't go around using that test on just anybody.
>>
>>223988077
So it's not a test for every potential ruler?
>>
>>223988077
>No one in House Harkonnen was Bene Gesserit, much less a potential Kwisatz Haderach.
Yeah, but wasn't Feyd-Rautha originally going to breed with a female Jessica-Leto Atreides child for a potential Kwisatz Haderach? If so, clearly his genes were important, as well as a requirement not to be an animal.
>>
>>223988442
What they mean by "human" is basically just "rational". Genetics are of vital importance to them but this isn't genetic.
>>
>>223988615
You can be perfectly rational and a slave to your instincts and base desires, that's what the test is about, filtering out beasts. The Harkonnens run gladiator pits, contrast that with the ethics, intelligence and self-restraint of the Atreides. They're polar opposites.
>>
>>223988615
I think it means a bit more than that. It means being capable of holding onto your rationality in extreme adversity. Sort of a mind over matter thing.
>>
>>223988675
Baron Harkonnen is not a “beast,” just utterly devoid of morality. You remember the analogy Mohiam gives Paul during the test - that bit about an animal gnawing a paw off to escape pain versus a human choosing to bear it for the opportunity of revenge? The Baron would bear the pain. Raban on the other hand …
>>
>>223988804
he also weighs 1000 pounds and requires levitation pads to move
>>
>>223988675
Failing the test is irrational.
Anyway, they're not ethical women; the test is extremely unethical as we understand the term.
>>
>>223988442
Were you there?
>>
>>223988123
it is not
>>
>>223988049
Well, uh, its because you are stupid bro. The only thing you know about Dune comes from the movies, which are full of noncanon nonsense like Lady Fenring going to Geidi Prime to give Feyd the gom jabbar test.
>>
I like how Baron Harkonnen rationally tortured Dr Yueh's wife, killed him once he fulfilled his deal, slaughtered the Atreides forces, and carpet bombed civilian Fremen.
>>
>>223989805
It was highly rational. The only reason the Baron lost is because he didn't know about the genetic freak that could see the future and thought Paul was just another noble's heir.
>>
>>223988049
They need their genes
>>
>>223989805
It WAS rational, it was just evil. Irrational and evil are two different things. That fact seems to be what you're struggling to understand for some reason.
>>
>>223989854
If Paul died in the attack the Baron would have needed to get production of spice on arrakis perfectly immediately (wouldn't have happened) the only reason he was allowed to and not immediately massacred was because the emperor supported because the other houses liked Leto enough to make him a threat to the emperor. With Leto gone, the emperor could scape goat the harkonnens and he'd be completely unchallenged after that
>>
>>223989854
>>223989890
I'm following what you guys are saying, that's why it's nonsense. >>223988615
I didn't say the gom jabbar Test of Humanity is a test to see if you have solid reasoning. It's about awareness and mastery of self, which Paul Atreides had plenty of, and the Baron Harkonnen demonstrably didn't. Hence the OP.
>>
didn't the atreides steal arrakis and politick the shit out of the harkonnens before this which is why the baron hates them so much

no

The flying fat man, The Baron cannot control his appetites, He is described as constantly fidgeting his fingers, he gorges until he is so large he cannot move unassisted,, he molests young boys and even dreams of raping Paul instead of getting a hot sexy witch wife useful ally and strong heir bearer. Every choice he makes is to secure his own power and wealth, or to gain more of it. He is deathly afraid of losing his power and blunders into constant traps.
He's about as rational and self-possessed as a large black women at a Church's Chicken or Waffle House. The exact opposite of rigorous culture of super human discipline of the Atreides.
>>
>>223988049

The test was to see if the Atriedes heir may be the Kwisatz Haderach since Lady Jessica had given birth to a male against the orders of the Bene Gesserit.
>>
>>223989943
Try this reasoning:
>If I take my hand out of the box, I'll die
>I don't want to die
>Therefore I must not remove my hand
It's very solid reasoning. Simple, but undeniably solid.
