I don’t mind the prequels, but what is the defense or point of Maul being a very underdeveloped character? No external media like clone wars or comics won’t count.
>>223986131he was supoosed to be a one off character who dies in TPM and never gets mentioned again, like boba fett, fans liked him so George expanded on his story and brought him back in TCW
>>223986131Of all the bad stuff in the prequels this is the lamest critique.Did Jaws, Godzilla, Jason Voorhees etc have well developed characters ??
>>223986155except that in the marketing for the phantom menace he was literally on everything and promoted incessantly like he was the main character so it was a bit of a let down to hype all the kids up over nothing. Boba became a fan favourite organically and wasn't used in marketing almost at all originally, isn't even on any of the posters etc.
>>223986131they gave him a red and black color-palette and horns so that the audience wouldn't need to think too much.
>>223986131Boba Fett is probably the second most popular antagonist in the original trilogy after Vader, and he has no character development whatsoever beyond his appearance.
>>223986233>cept that in the marketing for the phantom menace he was literally on everything and promoted incessantly like he was the main characterhe was the first non vader, palpatine sith lord and served as the main villian for the movie. of course hes going to be on every marketing thing
>>223986260yeah, so it makes the fact him being a near non entity in the movies even more glaring as the OP suggests, are you ESL?
He's a strong silent type. Like Gary Cooper.
>>223986131Sometimes you've got to leave them wanting more.
>>223986131>At last my master we will have our revenge
>>223986268Whats with the aggression? He didnt speak much but he was more then present in TPM. Are we goin to act like duel of fates didnt happen, or the probe scene, or his talk with palpatine, or his first encounter with Qui Jon and him making it clear that he is a sith lord? He was not a non entity, aside from the fact that he did not speak, but in TCW they made him a chatterbox for some reason lol
>>223986131Was never going to appear after TPM + George wanted him to be the strong silent type. Also he doesnt have much to add to conversations hes in.
>>223986233That's more of a flaw with the marketing than the movie itself. They learned from characters like Boba Fett that they could market and sell toys of any cool looking characters regardless of plot importance, and just did it preemptively this time. It's kind of a slimy marketing tactic I guess, but that doesn't mean there's anything anything wrong with a less developed character like Boba or Maul in the context of the movie itself. Sometimes you just need a character who is there to move the plot along, aura farm a bit, and act as a catalyst to other character's development, in this case Obi-wan's. There just wasn't anything left for him to do, and that's okay.
>>223986131He's an aspect of Vader, as are all the lightsaber-wielding henchmen in the Prequels. Maul's design and behavior tell you all you need to know.
>>223986916The thing about the Maul series that aired earlier this year is that it's not really about Maul but Sith in general, using him to make a point about their nature.
>>223986233Had to get people to buy tickets somehow. Who else would you use to promote the movie?
>>223986199an entire first film led up to jason voorhees appearing in a sequel. jaws spends most of the movie teaching you about sharks and never appears until the end and godzilla also has better character developmemt than darth balls. he jumps off a speeder bike in one scene has about 3 minutes dedicated to how hes a very powerful sith or something and that's it back to trade negotiations and pod racing and meesa gonna take-a big doodoo on the story meesta jedi! until he's killed in the overdramatic finale with zero fucking dialogue.
>>223986233>hype all the kidsLiterally the point
>>223986131Almost like he's a PHANTOM MENACE or something.
>>223986131He was meant to be an expendable stooge of Palpatine. His menacing aura, mystique, and lack of dialogue also serves to help drive forward the plot because because the Jedi aren't sure what to make of him.>But which was destroyed? The Master or the Apprentice?I mean, think about it, he has like two lines in the film and both of them are with Palpatine. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan don't hear him utter so much as a word and presumably fail to gain sort of useful information from Nute Gunray or any of his lackeys. The Jedi completely fail to gain any insight as to who this nigga with a red lightsaber is or whether he's part of larger conspiracy. Their complacency ultimately proves fatal because if they had seriously followed up or better yet captured him alive, it might've unraveled Palpatine's schemes before they could bear fruit.a

Their complacency ultimately proves fatal because if they had seriously followed up or better yet captured him alive, it might've unraveled Palpatine's schemes before they could bear fruit. Capturing him alive was extremely unlikely due to Obi Wan being barely out of his Padawan diapers, obviously being able to question Maul would have been great but I don't think he really had the ability to defeat Maul without dealing him a killing blow. Breaking his lightsaber was a moment of surprise that given a few more seconds of not being half a man Maul would've used to turn the tide.
>>223986131I like maul being an enigma. He’s THE phantom menace. That’s what it’s all about.
>>223991189>I like maul being an enigma.Same. To me Maul died at the end of Phantom Menace and bringing him back when Grievous, Dooku and Ventress were the key villains of the Clone Wars was retarded pandering.Maul was unique in the era he appeared in cause he wasn't a talker. He was a no nonsense assassin that got down to business whenever he appeared. He was the first real showing of what a trained Sith Lord (prior to the Plagueis being alive at the time retcon) that wasn't a half-crippled cyborg could do against equally trained Jedi. It was awesome, and like all awesome things they had to ruin it.
>Star Wars
>>223986131> but what is the defense or point of Maul being a very underdeveloped character? They simply made another Boba Fett except on purpose. Badass mysterious henchmen. By definition the moment you start to explain more about them they stop being mysterious.
>>223986199The fuck are you doing badmouthing Jaws? The human characters in that movie are absolutely well developed. They dont really have a character arc, but they all have their own voices and personalities. The shark doesn't, of course. Because he's an animal.
>>223989509Did they fix his horns on with playdoh?Couldn't they have done a better job?
>>223992049>The shark doesn't, of course. Because he's an animal.what was jaws family life like ?? Why did he go after humans instead of other fish? Maybe they should have had a flash back where a fisherman killed his mother when he was a baby shark
>>223992990Jaws was the great white version of an incel, expressing his virgin rage on defenseless human targets.
>>223986131Because when you develop him you get Clone Wars Maul who's an incredibly lame and generic villain
>>223986131>looks like satan>black>hostile>chimps outAnon, it's not as deep as you think
>>223989509I always found it interesting how shitty of a job they did blending in the playdoh they used to attach his horns to his head
>>223989509Well explained. For some reason people just refuse to aknowledge that Lucas is a genius
Vader is very underdeveloped in the first film and that's specifically why they work. They're cool-looking menacing guys that we barely see and then they kill the older hero with a cool sword.
>>223986131He was meant to be a single villain to tease the Sith coming back but he wasn't ever meant to be as developed as Dooku or Grievous. Simple as.>>223986233Are you retarded? Maul appeared far less than Anakin who got all media for him which makes sense cause he's the protag. Boba literally DOES appear in most of the marketing and even had a cartoon in the Holiday Special teasing him and him alone, he was the main thing teased leading up to ESB.>>223993850Vader is more developed than Maul in ANHThat being said Lucas wasn't clear on if he was going to continue SW and even if he did he knew Vader would be present more, meanwhile Lucas didn't give a fuck about Maul and kept him dead for a decade until he got his retarded ST pipe dream and retconned him back into TCW which makes no fucking sense but at that point Lucas had long lost the plot
>>223993929>Vader is more developed than Maul in ANH11 minutes of screen time compared to 6. They're both essentially non-characters with less screen time than R2-D2.
>>223994061We see how the Imperial military reacts to him, we get his connection to Obi-Wan, we get a fraction of his backstory, etcThe most you get with Maul is lore that's more there to set up Sidious' own motivations, like the scene where they talk on Coruscant.
>>223986243>>223986233His visual design explains that he is a bad guy, and evil jedi, a so called sith.He is a menace. But by the end of it he is defeated and it is stated he was either the Master or the Apprentice so there is a Phantom Menace
>>223994085Kino
>>223994061the difference is that Vader is at least tied as the main antagonist with Tarkin and most scenes with him are Vader making decisions and driving the story. Maul on the other hand is simply an agent that is there to pursue the good guys and aura farm, and at that like 90% of his screentime is used up in a lightsaber battle.
>>223986131>underdevelopedwhat the fuck is this reddit shit supposed to mean?
>underdevelopedHis entire appeal is the mystique. It's scary. We know nothing of this guy other than Sidious grooming him. He shows up with a unique dual blade look and an apparent fightermaxx archetype. It was awesome. No we don't need 10 hours of reddit chungus character exploration. Any depiction of Maul outside of TPM is non-canon.
>>223986131How do you mean?
>>223986131>No external media like clone wars or comics won’t count. Why not?
>>223996693
>>223986131It's clear that if Lucas was planning for Maul to return in future media alive, Obi-Wan should've been forced to cut off his legs instead to win when he hops over Maul since Maul, skilled as he is supposed to be, wouldn't turn around for 5 seconds and look dumbfounded as Obi-wan cuts him in half but instead would've swung his whole body around quickly to swing his lightsaber at Obi-wan only for Obi-wan to bend his legs as soon as he lands so Maul misses his strike and then he aims Qui-gon's lightsaber at the only part he could reach which is Maul's legs, resulting in Maul falling into the giant hole. This way, it makes Maul's injury much less severe as he isn't missing his genitals or vital organs and we don't get the stupid spider shit later.
He should have been the main villain for the trilogy. He kills Liam in part 1, mace in part 2, and anakin kills him in part 3. It would be cliche to make maul his father so make him his unc
>>223986131It’s the point of the phantom menace. This flashy looking with guy gets all the attention, while the real bad guy (sheev) can go unnoticed
