Can we talk about japanese films? looking for stuff like pic related. 50s, 60s and 70s are god tier, i haven't seen a single film that isn't good, after that they went full retarded and it's all wacky bullshit

unless you 1) understand japanese and 2) are familiar with japanese behavior and mannerisms then you cannot accurately judge the quality of their movies. sorry, gaijin.

it is the equivalent of listening to someone interviewed in a language you do not understand. the foreign ear that shrimply reads the subtitles will deem the individual far more competent and charismatic than someone that understands the language and picks up on how much of a dumbfuck they are.

Vengeance is Mine 1979 is incredible. It's why Schrader cast the lead in Mishima.

Japanese culture has dominated Asia+ since the bubble era, influenced the "Japan Inc" fears in Blade Runner, Gung Ho, Black Rain...

Have you seen Onibaba, anon? Based on your enjoyment of Demons/Shura, I think you'd like it.

i've seen, they're probably my two favorite jap films, i don't know if there are more like them but every japanese director from that time made like 60 films so i don't even know where to start

I'd say start with Masaki Kobayashi's Harakiri and Kwaidan, they're both incredible films. His Human Condition trilogy is also great, but is not a good introduction to his work.

Makai Tensho/Samurai Reincarnation is one of the best movies nobody's seen. It's Bram Stoker's Dracula meets Ninja Scroll, and Sonny Chiba as Jubei Yagyu is one of the coolest characters ever put on film.

The world is going through a cultural decay. See Hollywood and compare to the movie they used to make. I think Japanese cinema is doing pretty good considering the circunstances

Ishiro Honda is known for his Godzilla flicks but he did great stuff outside Godzilla. I recommend Matango and The Human Vapor. Both are kino

Everyone glazes this movie but it’s really just a black comedy about a horny old woman cockblocking a younger woman.
