Is George Lucas right or is he just lying? He says the acting and cheesy dialogue for the prequels were bad on purpose and it was just retro.
The acting is fine for the most part. The problem is the script.
>>22398461599% of all claims of "its supposed to be shit" is usually a cope response, in other words if that quote is true George is certainly lying out of his ass
>>223984615Funny, George, because you could say the same about the original trilogy and it doesn't suck.
>>223984615The Lucas saga is a fantasy tale set in space. The dialogue is not grounded or "realistic"Watch the LOTR movies and tell me the characters talk like people in real life. They don't, because it's fantasyPeople are retarded. If you don't even know the genre of the movie you are criticizing , shut the fuck up
>>223984615>>223984635in the 30s they didn't have green screens. Some of the hollow acting is due to a cast running around green screen rooms and having to pretend dramatic things are happening.
>>223984615Is it really necessary for him to use all those sophisticated words just because people didn't like his movies enough?
>>223984638>>223984667>>223984723>>223984746Calm down Mike
>>223984723Some of the lines are just retarded and george letting his politics get in the way unironically When Obi-Wan says his allegiance is to democracy the entire theater laughed. Hes a jedi, his job is to ensure the sith are defeated and stay that way. He isnt elected or something and he isnt a politician and Mace said "were keepers of the peace, not soldiers" so it just makes no sense.
>>223984723I love ROTS and I think it turned out fine, but this is still just depressing to see. They should still create cool sets and just use CGI to fill in the last 10%. I was watching A.I. the other night and it was so cool to notice that Rouge City was a real set.
>>223984723Theatre actors do this without an issue. Mug green screen, It's a cope for bad actors
>>223984746People take it different ways, depending on their sophistication.
>>223984881I'm a simple man, if you give me space western with rough edges I like. If you give me shiny, flashing objects without tension I drink.
I don't think Lucas intended it to come out a way it did as a matter of style, but I do think there is a stagey earnestness to it that is part of the reason why irony-poisoned zoomers are enjoying the prequels more than expected. It's obviously stilted and corny goofiness but at least it's not acting smug and self-aware all the time.
>>223984723>>223984815For all the criticism it gets, I have to admit that it created a very distinctive behind-the-scenes vibe.
yeah he's right. i think it's intentional, but it's a matter of taste whether you actually like it.go watch the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, just notice HOW people talk. it's very lofty and play-like, which is pretty weird for a Spider-Man movie (arguably the superhero where it SHOULD be more naturalistic, even social realism).the upshot is, these films won't age. the special effects? maybe. but Anakin/Obi-Wan/Padmé's conversations are the same in 2026 as they were in the early 2000s.meanwhile, the Disney sequels feel very much>these were written in the 2010s.it's already dated.
>>223984723>Some of the hollow acting is due to a cast running around green screen rooms and having to pretend dramatic things are happening.Anon, there are entire stageplays where they just have 1-2 chairs, no sets, the whole time. or no props at all. they just act.i don't buy this idea that >the actors did a bad job because they couldn't SEE the planet!how many Shakespeare plays have a player looking stage left and remarking on what he can see? or a Gilbert & Sullivan musical where they talk about 'seeing land' from their 'ship'?
>>223984615he should use ai to restore original jar jar
>>223984615I don't know...Ive seen some 1930s movies and they aren't that poorly written
>>2239853601930s movies also have better cinematography.
>>223984615>I made it bad with awful stiff acting on purpose
>>223985866not what is being said at all.
>>223985172>>223984844Theater dramas are typically human to human dramas, where you just pretend they're in some room. They don't pretend tehy're on the back of a giant lizard in some action scene.
>>223984615He's saying if you didn't like the Attack of the Clones it's because you weren't a sophisticated enough cinemagoer to have seen all the popular Saturday matinee serials of the 1930s like Flash Gordon.Your dislike of the film is purely because you're a massive pleb who hasn't seen enough 1930s films to understand that he's deliberately trying to replicate that "old-fashioned" style. So it's a pretty standard "You're just not smart enough to get it" argument. It implies that the opposite must also be true. That if you liked Attack of the Clones it's because you're a highly sophisticated cinema aficionado who has seen all the classic 1930s Saturday matinee adventure serials and immediately recognized that Attack of the Clones was stylistically emulating those serials as opposed to emulating the method acting style of films from the 1950s. But then he says the prequels were made for children. Children who happen to be experts on the stylistic differences between films made in the 1930s and films made in the 1950s I guess.Lucas has also talked many times about how the OT was based on the 1930s Saturday matinee serials. In the Empire of Dreams documentary they even have clips from these 1930s Flash Gordon serials and compare them with A New Hope. So if the prequels were made in this style as well, OT fans should love the prequels, right? But they didn't. So then he tries to argue that the reason OT fans don't like the prequels is because they're made for children. Not made for sophisticated fans of 1930s cinema anymore I guess. He's been swapping these contradictory arguments around for years to cope with all the crazy bullshit he gets from the fans. Yes, his level of self-deception is probably unhealthy, but it's hard not to feel sorry for the guy. He just wanted to entertain us. And he was much better at it than Disney will ever be.
>>223984615To him the original trilogy and the prequels are the same
>>223986094Plays also have physical sets. This >>223984844 is a clueless retard.
Except for American Grafitti, which had some basis in the real world, Lucas makes derivative movie-movies, which are always going to be a notch below real artistic achievement. You typically can't make a masterpiece out of a comic strip.
>>223985881yes it is
>>223986094i mean i can buy the connections between the characters/actors?i always thought the Han-Leia romance was forced. i get it: he's a bad boy, it's teasing, there's some sexual tension in the Millennium Falcon.then in Return of the Jedi he's a whiny teenage girl about it all, for some reason? but overall, i never bought their romance.i buy Anakin and Padme's romance. the looks they give each other, the little smiles, WHAT they talk about and HOW they talk about it. Padme clearly wants to talk shop, Anakin wants to change the subject, it's how young people act. the be-all-and-end-all of criticism, the Plinkett Reviews, points out the scene in the grass as bad, but ignores the actual dialogue. it's two young adults discussing how they each lost their virginity. that kind of shit won you AWARDS in the early 2000s.
>>223986868>i always thought the Han-Leia romance was forced. i get it: he's a bad boy, it's teasing, there's some sexual tension in the Millennium Falcon. The default is the hero is the one who whoos the princess, but no one bought that Mark Hamil was masculine. He's probably gay too. Everyone can buy Harrison Ford as macho and masculine so the story is re-written so that they romance.
>>223984635>wooden expressionless dialogue in front of a green screen for every main character.yeah for the most part
>>223984615IM SORRY GEORGE
>>223984615It's George fucking Lucas, i'm not arguing with him.
>>223986687Oh ya can…but it takes style
>>223984844>Theatre actors do this without an issuetell that to ian mckellen
>>223989322nta but you do see the matte painting, yes? lucas did the same shit with the ot.
>>223986868>it's two young adults discussing how they each lost their virginitycorrection: it's padme talking about how she lost her virginity and anakin trying to pretend he fucked.
