When I was a kid I was so excited to watch Fluke finally that I bought it outright when it was on VHS, then it turned out to be an extremely sad kids movie and I let it sit on my shelf and never saw it again. Ebert and Siskel liked it and they are evil for doing so.

Jesus, I remember Jack Frost doing psychic damage to me as a kid too, and reading this synopsis I realize it ripped off this one's premise but tried to market as a fun, heartwarming Christmas movie for the family, instead of a dog movie.

Maybe not as bleak as others here, but god damn did this movie make me sad as fuck.

Especially if you've ever had a friendship like the kids in this film had. I used to have that and it fell apart over frankly some bullshit I still to this day cant wrap my head around why we couldnt get past.

Just reminded me how carefree I used to be.

Just finished it. It was very cool, but not misery porn or anything. Pretty logical sci fi space tragedy stuff if a colony ship drifted off course forever and DIDNT have cryochambers. I dont get how it would ever be the most depressing thing ever. Being lost in space isnt some revelitory concept.
>>
>>223986865
same, just finished it. it is far from depression inducing kino, it's just a shitty spaceship poorly made. it was interesting but far from what op suggested

>oh it’s also in the sparse, post-apocalyptic Australian Outback
>>
>>223994388
Loosely, yes. Some chapters are a lot more obvious which commandment they symbolize while some are a bit more abstract. But yeah, that’s kind of the idea but every single episode is basically a tragedy in and of itself. The visual storytelling is unmatched
>>
I really don't understand what's so bleak about this movie. Earth is literally the same as that ship. It's a rock everyone is one just floating around in space with no purpose. Yet no one here is going crazy and suicidal because of that fact, we make the best of what we have and our reality and that's that.

When you think about it your life is just a series of rooms, how many people did you meet, how many rooms have you been in. You will probably only meet tens of thousands of people in your life and only speak with thousands of them, you will only enter in hundreds of rooms for extended periods of time.

The spaceship isn't small enough to make a clear difference in outlook and feeling at all. I think the movie is irrational and people wouldn't react like that at all. Otherwise small island nations like Malta or Maldives wouldn't work at all.

OP movie had a good idea but didn't flesh it enough. It's also very anti-human, but given that its about a lesbian woman it makes sense she would fall into a sex cult and get pregnant as soon as there were signs of any danger. I didn't like it, and won't recommend it irl
>>
>>223994500
This is what I mean by anti human. So much sci Fi is written on the pretense that "without the trappings of society you will revert to animal." Like no, we BUILT society while still being animals. Shit doesn't suddenly collapse because it gets harder, we DESIRE civilization and find structures to create it. Very misanthropic about human nature.

https://www.criterion.com/films/28661-dekalog says:

>This masterwork by Krzysztof Kieślowski is one of the twentieth century’s greatest achievements in visual storytelling. Originally made for Polish television, Dekalog focuses on the residents of a housing complex in late-Communist Poland, whose lives become subtly intertwined as they face emotional dilemmas that are at once deeply personal and universally human. Its ten hour-long films, drawing from the Ten Commandments for thematic inspiration and an overarching structure, grapple deftly with complex moral and existential questions concerning life, death, love, hate, truth, and the passage of time. Shot by nine different cinematographers, with stirring music by Zbigniew Preisner and compelling performances from established and unknown actors alike, Dekalog arrestingly explores the unknowable forces that shape our lives. Also presented are the longer theatrical versions of the series’ fifth and sixth films: A Short Film About Killing and A Short Film About Love.

I've only seen the two mentioned at the end of that description, and they are great. Bleak, but great.

Literally the most miserable movie I can think of.
It's 3 hours worth of a kid getting raped, tortured, psychologically abused and it's filmed black and white to boot.

"Nil by Mouth" (UK 1997), the only film the great actor Gary Oldman has directed. I only tried to see it once, but had to leave about one-third through because it was so depressing.

Google summary, in part: The film is a gritty, semi-autobiographical portrayal of a dysfunctional working-class family in South London, featuring themes of domestic abuse, alcoholism, and drug addiction.

Significance: The movie is noted for its raw realism and contains the highest recorded number of uses of the word "cunt" in cinema history.

>>
>>223996957
It's literally the same as that ship in the sense that it is floating aimlessly in space with no escape. Not that the shape/size is the same. Maybe the sentence should have been "Earth is (in) literally the same (situation) as that ship"
>>
>>223996634
I know its cliche to say but that ending is still the most depressing one I've seen
>>
>>223997187
Shut up, idiot.
>>
>>223994500
You must not have thought about this very long.
The ship is the size of a town, if you get bored of it, you have nowhere to go, there is also no sunlight, and no chance for anything substantial to ever change. And it has very finite resources. They all die in like 20 years.
Earth is very big, with so far, millions of years worth of resources. You can relocate somewhere if you get bored of something, and with billions of people, new things happen all the time.
Being stuck in a town with a finite lifespan with no sunlight is not the same as being free to roam on a developed planet.
>>
>>223997187
This is the dumbest shit I've heard all day. Maybe even all week.
>>
>>223997423
The vast VAST majority of humans that ever lived died within a couple of miles from where they were born and never left their small village. The movie shows the spaceship resource issues being a thing because everyone is too demotivated to perform maintenance and upkeep on the systems.

"No sunlight" is harsh but the movie is scandinavian, it's not like those people don't historically barely get any sunlight anyway. Humanity has had plagues that wiped out the majority of your loved ones and 50-66% of all people you have ever met that led to civilizational collapse and humanity didn't somehow become nihilistic and suicidal to the point of killing our species. History is one big tale of disease, warfare and struggles and humanity thrived despite all of that. So people sitting in a spaceship with nice modern amenities and no real threat to their livelihoods should be comfortable and make the best of things.

There are people living on isolated islands in the pacific ocean with no way to get off smaller than that ship being fully content right now. The entire premise of the movie is unrealistic. I don't think people would bat an eye after maybe a 1-2 year mourning period which is more about never seeing their loved ones again than it is about their actual day to day living situation.

>>
>>223998353
Normal people have real life for deep thoughts and experiences. Movies are toys like other forms of entertainment.
>>
>>223996547
That's towards the end and it's clear nothing matters at that point. You're just watching it play out. I think the movie is commenting on how modern people can't just live for the sake of living like our ancient ancestors did. You take away purpose or meaning and we will lose the will to live altogether. I don't think it's correct at all but an interesting premise of despair and depression as a societal disease rather than at an individual's level.
