I'm reserving judgement until it comes out
sounds like the story is going to be so drastically different that comparing to Dune Messiah is pointless
I wish Chani would get her comeuppance for being such a cunt but that's not likely to happen
>>223980984
Dune is Gen-Z's first real hype movie event
LOTR came out before they existed, the prequels came out when they were babies, and Endgame was when they were in middle school
you just haven't noticed because you're 45 and out of touch
>>
Villeneuve is a competent director that makes good indie vibe films, but he doesn’t have the chops to make something truly epic and eventful.

fpbp. Just look at the box office comparison. LOTR didn't have all the annoying big stars in it either.
>>
>>223980968
No. Lotr trilogy is pure magic compared to DUNC
>>
>>223980984
This. The only "memes" i've seen were just mocking zendaya.
>>
>>223980984
While this is true, it's also not fair to say.

Nothing has cultural impact in the way it did 20 years ago. The internet and streaming and social media has made it so easy to construct a bubble around yourself of pure convenience where you only see what you want to see and you only get positive feedback from it that there are seldom things which actually break through all of that.

It's a lot harder to break through that bubble of individual interest than it was in 2003.

Dennis' flicks have no soul

Is there any real-life correlation between the Fremen and Yemen? They sound awfully close and Dunc IS very middle-east/arab coded.

kino
>>
i love the dune books but think the dunc movies are garbage, would rather watch the spice diver cut of lynch's dune or the scfy mini series
>>
>Thank you for sending me a copy of Dune. I received one last year from Lanier and so already know something about the book. It is impossible for an author still writing to be fair to another author working along the same lines. At least I find it so. In fact I dislike DUNE with some intensity, and in that unfortunate case it is much the best and fairest to another author to keep silent and refuse to comment
>>
Sorry, bad films don't stand a chance. It's unfortunate, really. Chalamet was HORRIBLY miscast and the scripts sucked. More soul in 5 minutes of Lynch Dune than anything of DUNC.

the syfy miniseries with mcavoy was fun.

I want to see it just for the moment they offer Paul a Ghola of dead Chani, so I can make an AI edit of all the times she opposed him flashing through his head and saying "No thanks, I'm good" before they even get to say they want something in return.
>>
>>223980968
Both have flaws as adaptations, but in terms of artistry, LotR was better. Dunc movies are hollow industrial cinema-tier movies that are fun to watch, but that's it. No impact, just fancy visuals.

Can dune surpass Lotr with Zendaya?

The films have already been enshittified. The visual spectacle is there but the books are 100x better, and that's not even mentioning the story changes.

Actually that's too harsh a criticism. Nvm.

Financially? Yes but only because they need to fill 1/2 as many seats to get the same box office return. Sad.

>Kings are a terrible idea. This was maybe my answer to Tolkien, a lovely man who wrote a lovely book and got almost everything wrong. Lord of the Rings has a very cozy philosophy: the rightful king comes home, the trees blossom, everyone has second breakfast. But Tolkien never asks the important questions. Who controls the pipe-weed supply? Because he who controls the pipe-weed controls the Shire. Did anyone conduct a proper ecological survey of Mordor? What are its water reserves? Could you terraform it, given three hundred years and a very patient botanist?

>And who planted the prophecy about the king’s return in the first place? Because I guarantee you some secretive sisterhood of elf-witches seeded that legend centuries in advance, just in case. The giant eagles have a total monopoly on air travel, and nobody thinks that’s suspicious? That’s a guild, and guilds always want something.

>Then Aragorn becomes king and reigns for a hundred years, and Tolkien says this is a happy ending. A hundred years! Do you know how much religion builds up around a man in a hundred years? Within a generation there are priests of Elessar. Within two, there’s a holy war. Little hobbit children are reciting catechisms about the Return of the King in their little hobbit-hole schools, and somewhere a tiny hobbit fanatic is sharpening a tiny knife.

>Being the rightful king doesn’t make you safe to follow. That’s the whole problem. My heroes have prophecy, bloodlines, superpowers and the best intentions in the universe, and they still end up with sixty billion dead. Never trust a man the eagles show up for.

not really that surprising though
>>
I saw the first dune remake and didnt even realize theres three now?

They just butchered it
>>
Dunc 3 will be a better movie than rotk, but have zero lasting impact and win less awards
>>
>>223988207
Did he really say that? Here's Thomas Hobbe's arguments for absolute monarchy.
>>
There's absolutely no way the Return of the DUNC is going to sweep the oscars or live up to the hype. Messiah is fine as a book but its absolutely nothing like the first one which build up towards a very grand climax all by itself with lots of good moments scattered through out. Its going to have to be four hours long and have lots of changes for it to really be interesting to the audience that got hooked by the first two.
>>
>>223988297
No.
It the Martin quote about LOTR and Aragorn's tax rates rewritten based on Herbert's philosophy.
>>
>>223988297
No, I was riffing on the George RR martin meme, who did genuinely write:

>Ruling is hard. This was maybe my answer to Tolkien, whom, as much as I admire him, I do quibble with. Lord of the Rings had a very medieval philosophy: that if the king was a good man, the land would prosper. We look at real history and it’s not that simple. Tolkien can say that Aragorn became king and reigned for a hundred years, and he was wise and good. But Tolkien doesn’t ask the question: What was Aragorn’s tax policy? Did he maintain a standing army? What did he do in times of flood and famine? And what about all these orcs? By the end of the war, Sauron is gone but all of the orcs aren’t gone – they’re in the mountains. Did Aragorn pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby orcs, in their little orc cradles?

>Real-life kings had real-life problems to deal with. Just being a good guy was not the answer. You had to make hard, hard decisions. Sometimes what seemed to be a good decision turned around and bit you in the ass; it was the law of unintended consequences. I’ve tried to get at some of these in my books. My people who are trying to rule don’t have an easy time of it. Just having good intentions doesn’t make you a wise king.
>>
>>223980968
No one gives a shit about Dune though. The faggots in charge think they're hot shit though, so now they've set themselves to become the laughing stock of the industry when Doomsday runs over their asses with a fucking truck.

i'm 30 and literally nobody ever talks about dune except the week one is in theaters
there are no memes or quoted lines or merch or whatever and there's been that stuff for lotr since i was a kid
>>
>>223984262
The ones he wrote himself and hardcore catholic books. Oh, and also the Bible.
>>
>>223981590
The biggest meme was the popcorn bucket looking like an anus. I really like these movies but they don't really have good corny quotes or chad actors having a moment.
Maybe Pattinson will pull something off this movie again. Like he did with his last two big movies.

KEK, but not surprising, given how Oscars have been like in the recent years.

Ah yeah, I forgot about classic old tales. He enjoyed them too. Well, some of them, at least.
>>

I just watched Lynch's Dune last week for the first time.
I will never watch the modern jeetcgi slopfest that forces you to look at timojew ratface and zendaya.
>>
>>223981034
Nobody outside of /tv/ talks about dunc.
>>
>>223980968
Despite the praise that the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings films get for being faithful to the books, they actually had quite a few retarded changes in them.

But none of them came close to "Chani is the leader of the atheist Fremen faction that lives on the south side of Arrakis and she is in on the plot to assassinate Paul"
>>
>>223984262
Very cynical about religion and there are no good characters in the classic sense.
>>
>>223984262
William Morris books were his favorite and most influential to his writing from non fiction. Other books he liked were medieval and ancient sagas written by Germans and anglos. Then his autistic obsession was studying ancient languages. Then as the other anon said catholic books.

>>223980968
i only watched the first dune movie and it felt really muted, little to no reason to care about any of the characters, is literally nowhere near lord of the rings
>>
>>223988661
You would most likely like the second one. The first one I liked because i thought the political intrigue was interesting and dynastic flexing is cool.

The second one is more of an exciting action movie.
>>
>>223981600
This. Monoculture is completely fucking dead.
>>
>>223988344
/tv/ likes to shitpost about this, but if you actually look up interviews with Martin, he loves Tolkien and Lord of the Rings. His biggest real problem with LOTR is Gandalf being resurrected after dying in Fellowship, since it was such a wham moment for Martin the first time head it, and then it was undercut by Gandalf coming back in Towers.
>>223988515
DUNC is the most I ever hear about the movies.
>>
>>223988747
Heh, supposedly.
>>
>>223988754
lol, and then he also resurrects characters.

It's not in dispute that he loves Tolkien. It's just that his criticism is farcical. The Rangs of Power series even adopted it and showed the little orc baby and orc mom and won't you feel bad for them, lol.
>>
>>223988856
So GoTcucks should adore the Rangz.
>>
>>223988937
They probably do.
>>
>>223988766
Hard to argue otherwise. Its not like it was ever normal outside of local cultures or some subsection of the culture like academics or professionals.
>>
>>223981176
I think this is it.
>>
>>223986790
Agree, saw the first and don't recall anything except knife fights and shields. Didn't bother to watch the second
>>
Not even fucking close.
>>
>>223980968
HELL NO!
Dune had problems with it, Zendaya is just awful as Chani also.

LOTR had a good cast and was great overall, regardless if they didn't have all the modern effects.
>>
>>223988207
Idealism still means something, but people who only care about power and dominance without understanding people's hearts will never get that.
>>
>>223980968
Nope. The dune films are all style very little substance. The casting is ridiculous too. Jackson’s rings trilogy had real heart and soul. You don’t see movies like that anymore. Probably never will.
>>

LOTR is shit

Not with ratfaced effeminate twink Chamelet and baboondaya
Not with Villememe making it
>>
>>223980968
Villaneuve's Dune? No.
Dune itself? Yes, it could, but it has to be done well and it hasn't yet. Which also means perfect casting.
>>
>>223989857
Both of them were products of their time. Tolkien saw the all the good of preindustrial world and fought in war that was more black and white. While Herbert was how industry affected the natural world and lived through one if the worst wars, which had monsters on both sides. So I can't blame him for being a bit cynical.
>>
>>223988112
She is a genuine millstone around the second movie. Stealing Stilgar’s role as the only one who is willing to treat Paul as a human is one thing, but they didn’t even keep the loyalty and affection that both characters share for him. All because a character played by her just had to be independent.
>>
>>223980968
The difference is, lotr was competing with actual good movies for awards. Every thing is garbage these days, a clean sweep for dunc
