I'm tired of all the gaslighting on how Fight Club is about toxic masculinity
>>
>toxic masculinity
Stop using this feminist newspeak propaganda phrase
>>
>>223981427
being unfulfilled in a cold and isolating world leads to destructive behavior

and this was when the world was much less cold and isolating

it's a spiritual war and the depression is our lives

>toxic masculinity
# of victims of all wars, everywhere, over the past thousand years: 600 million
# of abortions performed, out of personal convenience, in the past fifty years: 2.5 Billion

Women stand atop a mass grave deeper and wider than any genocide in human history, and somehow men are the toxic ones?
>>

Actually I'm a raging alcoholic but thanks for defending me anon
>>
>it's embarrassing for men to cry about their problems unless you're literally dying of cancer
>even though it's cringe to outsiders so should only be seen by people who are also dying of cancer
>guy figures out loophole in system, no one needs to know he's actually crying about his unfulfilling life
>woman shows up, sees right through him, KWAB
>overcorrection.exe

a bowling team or wargaming group or something constructive, not destructive, with other men would probably be a healthier strategy
>>
>>223981603
Maybe its about all of those
>>
>>223980024
reminder that there is a solid theory that it's an "all in the head" movie about an emasculated dude and that pretty much everyone with whom he interacts, not just tyler, isn't real. that includes marla. the ending shot is him accepting his emasculation or literally trooning out.

toxic homosexuality.
>>
>>223980024
Its about masculinity, both toxic and positive.
Fight club isn't about hurting people, but feeling strong through taking pain and throwing a punch.

Good thing it's almost 30 years later and we have streamers and vtubers to keep us company and say our names for a small fee

it's about a dude that discovers that an apartment full of ikea furniture actually can't fill the void in his soul but helena bonham carter and a little bit of self-esteem can. this is a lesson that most people figure out in high school but fincher decided to spoon-feed the epiphany to the short bus.
>>
>>223980024
>like the movie
>decide the read the book
>the book actually includes real tips on how to create explosives and kill people
>>
>>223982207
I don't remember anything in the book like that except for the thing about making napalm with gasoline and some other ingredient. Also the thing about "paraffin never, ever worked for me" for the bombs. Nothing had enough detail to actually be used as instructions.
>>
>>223982254
Anon got the special edition that comes with the anarchist's cookbook included.
>>
>>223982254
There are ways of making napalm given but also some explicit stuff about nitroglycerin and gunpowder. Also stuff like instructions on how to make a light bulb explode or increase the pressure in someone's home water supply system so that turning the shower on could be deadly. In the movie the instructions about naplam have been stripped of details, but in the book they are legit apparently.

It's about beauty, its nature, how to harness it, and how it is destroyed or created.
And if you don't believe me, pay attention to Chuck Palahniuk's other books and short stories they often focus on beauty.

>>
>>223981427
attacking capitalist society and reclaiming self-reliance after being weakened by the boredom of the workplace.
it's the most left-wing movie to ever have that kind of success and reflects chuck palahniuk's anarcho-primitivist philosophy as well as his personal love for fighting
>>
It's about gay sex. Back then, it was something you did in secret, clandestine. Aka the 'fight club.' That's it. I was always embarrassed at how into this guys got. Sort of like American Psycho it made me realize how emasculated my fellow males were, that they took to these bizarre, faggot-driven versions of masculinity that did not resonate with me at all.
>>
>>223980024
That'd mean the cubicle worker is the healthy masculinity.
>>
>>223982681
Nah he said in an interview that he took a lot of the ideas from Great Gatsby.

>>
>>223982967
I've watched a few of his interviews through the years and don't remember him saying anything remotely like that. it's been a while since I've read the Great Gatsby but I don't think these books are similar at all even if you want to place them in opposition to each other. Not saying that you are lying. But have you read any of his other works? Fight Club they steal liposuction fat to make high end handmade soap that they sell in the beauty department. The narrator actually comments on other's characters looks and his own looks frequently, he beats that first timer up simply because he was beautiful. Part of his motivation for terrorism was to destroy beautiful landmarks and other markers of society and nature. One thing that I always find a bit odd is how people don't talk about how simple and beautiful Chuck's prose is, in particular when they are walking though the garden. Then there's Tyler just being the all around better and more beautiful version of the narrator or at leas what he thinks of as male beauty, since Marla is there to tell him different, which also matches up to real life male and female opinions on masculine beauty and masculinity itself. There's also his superficially or artificially beautiful apartment getting destroyed and then him going to live in a rotten and abandoned house that he cultivates beauty at once he starts project mayhem. Ofc beauty isn't the only theme that the book focuses on, and I didn't mention every example there is, but it's a big one.

>I'm tired of all the gaslighting
First of all what does that even mean? Maybe it's time to stop reading into things.
>>
>>223980024
People that say it's about toxic masculinity aren't just wrong, they're inversing the meaning.

Toxic masculinity is a word to describe the bad things about masculinity. The movie is about how masculinity is snowed under, suppressed in the zeitgeist of its time. It revels in being masculine in underground basements.

The rebellion is against all the feminised ways that men are asked to act in 1999.

a Fight Club sequel can be about those Bros-Only Retreats that are still commodified to heck like all the work-to-consoom derided in the movie.

Except Kafka painted similar scenario under totalitarian collectivism. The person is atomized = isolated and abandoned by the system he still must serve.

>what's it about

the book is stated to be a love story. brad pitt was basically just a monkey paw wish that happened while he was depressed and sleep deprived and thinking about fucking the Johnny Depp girl

it went like
>ugh that chick is so hot i bet she only fucks /fa/ punk art chads

and then he though about that so long he accidentally created that as an alter ego who started to actually act like that and shenanigans ensues

the movie makes it a little more anti-corp and makes the love story part a little less obvious. in the book pitt is basically just a psycho going around doing crazy shit like The Mask alter ego

How's middle school going?
>>
>>223980024
I believe the author of the book himself has said it's not about toxic masculinity but what does he know, he wrote the book wrong just like we read it wrong and watched the movie wrong.
>>
>>223986725
It's dumb because in no way is fight club about a buddhist balance. In fact it rejects those type of 60's eastern influences together with disdain for the ikea taoist table and "finding your spirit animal".

The narrator is fighting, kicking and screaming Tyler right until the end. In the book it ends with him waking up in a mental hospital while he thinks he's in heaven. Then they start talking to him clear that they're members and excited about his return. He started something he can't stop, like a cancer outgrowth.

In the movie they reset credit balances and he "kills" tyler, essentially taking his place.

The whole self-actualization enlightenment is an invention of whoever wrote that. Even the teenage version is closer to the truth. But the essence is closer of both versions of fight club that it's a destructive and self-destructive path, but an exhilerating one. In that sense >>223981944 is right that it's about Chuck's homosexuality, which is an inherently destructive and self-destructive path. But, I imagine, for its participants: exhilarating.

It's about taking control in a world where you feel like you have no control. I'd think feminists would relate to that on some level despite the main characters having penises, but they're incapable of empathy beyond in a performative virtue signaling way
>>
>>223980024
Was always one of the themes, it’s about angry disenfranchised men in an uncaring capitalist world lashing out and groupthink cult bullshit that basically makes them no better than the stuff they claim to hate
>>
>>223986020
>>223987506
Not that anon but the infographic is just overly described and specific and takes a stronger argument that it has too. Also most stories promote balance at the end of a conflict, especially introspective shit, it's almost too obvious to mention.

Tyler is just the typical villain that has a point, just the cliché where the villain is the mouthpiece for the author's ideas. In the end tyler defeats the world by destroying the financial system, but loses the battle for jack's mind and identity. And I think you're supposed to expect jack to prevail in the probably-collapsed society because he's a man now. It's an optimistic ending.

The basic takeaway is don't waste your life buying shit and being a pussy, but being a nihilist and acting like an animal isn't preferable either.
