I'm not the biggest Poltergeist fan but it confuses me why they needed a main villain to retcon the first one. They could have made any other family experience a haunting, even base it on real cases, but let's hire an actor who's actually dying of cancer to play an evil mastermind ghost. Pure exploitation.

That movie is crazy but it triggers my belief that the demon in the original was not pazuzu. Seeing James Earl Jones in that afrikan king costume and all the locusts made me think the film makers had taken too much lsd. (John Boorman, director of Zardoz)

yeah, the big problem with atmospheric horrors is that you have to be partially inspired by the setting. If you and the movie aren't vibing at the same frequency, there's nothing the movie can do to smack you around. It was the same for me and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

horror movies are never scary but they can very sad especially if you have kids. Hereditary for example, regardless of your opinion on it in general, has its emotional climax when the mother finds her daughter's body in the car off screen. The "shocking" close up of the ants eating her head was cheap shit compared to the dread and sorrow the audience feels waiting for the mother to look in the car that morning while the son is just lying awake in bed.
>>
>>223977410
Yeah, that scene hit me hard and I don't even have kids. Dread is more effective than shock and I wish more horror movie people recognised this.

Shark Exorcist or Night of the Lepus. I like terrible horror movies, but these were just boring more than anything.
>>
>>223981559
Not even McCoy from Star Trek could save Night of the Lepus. It sure was boring. It was cute fluffy bunnies running around in slow motion over badly constructed miniature sets coupled with horrible photography that served to accentuate its faults.
>>
>>223977457
>Dread is more effective than shock and I wish more horror movie people recognised this.
Unfortunately most horror movie fans just want gorefests and James Wan style jumpscare fests basically just haunted house rides in movie form because that's the only two ways to scare them apparently everything else is thriller territory or boring drama in their mind.
>>
>>223973272
Putting aside low-hanging fruit, honestly? Longlegs pissed me off quite a bit. I've seen horror comics from the 50s and 60s with less exposition. That entire ending sequence is insulting.

>>223978372
I was just watching this and I also laughed, but it's kind of eerie. I don't think it's possible to see it the same way someone would have 45 years ago. The actual vampire makeup looks pretty great.

>>
>>223981457
I didn't really enjoy Fright Night that much the first time I watched it either which was years and years ago but then I rewatched it again a few months back on a whim and ended up enjoying it way more than I thought possible. It went from a 6/10 straight to an 8/10 for me. The atmosphere is top notch and Chris Sarandon is at the top of his game here all the characters are extremely memorable the plot is surprisingly engaging for such a simple premise and the movie knows when to take itself seriously and when not to. Just a fun horror movie and a clear love letter to the genre like Scream. Love it.
>>
>>223982296
I think I found the earlier parts just rather hard going, like I said, couldn't get into it. Perhaps it does deserve another chance.

I think it was called Evils of the Night or something like that
Some Z-grade horror dreck from the 70s I think, about two country bumpkin mechanics tasked with slaughtering teenagers so that aliens can drain their blood for experiments; Utterly abysmal. Absolutely nothing in the way of acting, set design, dialogue, or special effects worth seeing, and some unfunny and poorly paces cornball humor to boot. The only thing that kept it from being erased from my memory was my annoyance at having sat through all 70 minutes of it, and in the beginning a guy gets vaporized by a laser in a way I thought was kind of funny

Weirdly this managed to get a good actor to feature in this as you literally see better acting in school productions. Couple it with the standard off the shelf CGI scream faces and it was hot garbage.

I guess I shouldn't be annoyed at a microbudget horror but Borely Rectory was one of my favourite "true" horror stories as a kid. One thing in particular from it is a classic horror movie cliche.

Cell was worse. Was already pissed off with The Dark Tower ending, that book made me drop him.

>>
>>223973272
Poltergoose 2 wasn't terrible, it was just bland. The effects for the monster under the bed were really cool.
There are a lot of mediocre horror movies but these ones were legitimately bad:
Noroi
The Quicksilver Highway
Bad Taste
Toxic Avenger
964 Pinocchio

Horror is a weird genre. It's the only genre where it's just kinda accepted that nearly all of them are bad, yet horror fans love them anyway. They're a weird crowd those horror people....like they have no standards, collective brain damage or something.
It must be all the ink from the shitty tattoos they all have, it must get into their brains and make them stupid.

The worst has to be The Butcher from 2007. It's literally unwatchable. Maybe it would be different with image stabilization, but there's no way to see this movie without developing vertigo.

The worst I've seen this month is Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster. It's one of those movies where you wonder how it didn't get riffed on MST3k, then realize it's because almost nothing happens in the movie.

The Traveller with Val Kilmer
>>
>>223983703
The funny thing is that while I acknowledge that it's objectively terrible in just about every way a movie can be, there's still something that I find charming about the whole thing. Like I can just picture in my head Barry Gillis and his buddies getting shitfaced and just having a laugh slapping a no-budget horror movie together. I'll turn it on quite frequently just as background noise.
>>
>>223978103
I was fully on board when I thought it was just going to be some "guys in a remote cabin have to survive while being besieged by mysterious creatures", but then it turned into some alien conspiracy slop with a magical retard, and I just couldn't be bothered anymore. The whole reason I saw it in the theater was because they packaged it with the "Final Flight of the Osiris" short, and I was in full-on Matrix hype mode at that point in time.
>>
>>223978103

Idk why but I really like the atmosphere of this movie
>>
>>223974363
I wanted to like this film, but there's so much going wrong for it. It's far too mean spirited, and the character changes to Lumis and Lynda piss me off. His need to make every movie have lots of white trash and grind house exploitation tropes and stylization really didn't help this film. His other films can be fun for what they are, but remaking one of the godfather's of the slasher genre in that way just seems asinine. At least Laurie and Annie were decent to solid equivalents to the original. The sequel is far worse though.

Its fucking hilarious. I haven't seen the first one but the second I saw at a party and everyone was completely fascinated by how batshit insane retarded it was. Off the top of my head:
>supporting lead is a 35 year old man in a catholic girls school
>way too many scenes of him being friendly to a lonely girl
>the nun protagonist gets super powers from a magic nun amulet
>the nun amulet lets her show nun blasts out of her hands
>a zombie, and a goat man, inexplicably show up, then inexplicably disappear at random
>the evil nun flies around like a cartoon villain
>supporting male lead murders children, gets away with it
>the same exact hallway is used for nearly 1/2 the movie, over and over again, constantly

Its a 10/10 shitty so stupid its good horror movie. Everyone laughed their ass off at it and I refuse to believe it was written sincerely.
>>
>>223988960

it was decent until the last 15-20 mins i thought.

honestly friday the 13th the original one is really bad. like it's in the vicinity of 'the room' bad.

you should have seen NOES before you saw those other more-adult flicks, numb nuts

True, only memorable thing about it for me is that it had one of the best jump scares of all time
>>
>>223986972
I usually just look at them to see how obviously astroturfed the reviews are.
They never have anyone you've ever heard of starring in them and look like they were filmed on a mobile phone.

Oh right, my bad. You don't see people fly up into the sky in The Happening, they just magically disappear because... trees were swaying in the wind or something idk I tuned out pretty quickly.
>>
>>223989557
That was the only jump scare that ever got me in a movie, when they whisked that black lady away into the sky right in he middle of a conversation.

As far as allegories go I thought it was pretty apt.

The book is something else man. Colonel Kurtz (that's actually his name) shoots one of his men in the leg for calling the ayys intergalactic niggers because racism isn't allowed in the Army. The whole thing is like someone doing a bizarre parody of Stephen King.
>>
>>223978133
I recently saw the original and was disappointed. Started off so strong but then felt like the movie just didn’t trust the audience at all and had to spell everything out to a painful degree. The whole conspiratorial exposition part and then the end literally screaming “DO YOU GET IT?”
Such a bummer because the first like 30 minutes or so I thought it was gonna become a new favorite of mine because it was so unnerving and well done and then it just shits the bed.

there are easy/technical answers like "some kid's home movie" or "this old YouTube video" but for me, it's picrel.

Hangman's Curse (2003), a (stealth) Christian horror film about a cursed high school. i just didn't understand what i was watching, it was on Sky TV one day in the 2000s, looked like a horror thing.

it's a mild obsession i have: the film and its production are fascinating to me, you just don't get shit like that here.

>But, Survival actually kept me engaged/entertained with its stupidity

It just made me sad that Romero thought that it was good.
>Diary was so bad I actually started lurking 4chan while watching it with a big group of friends.

Dang, mega comfy. Happy for you, anon.
>>
>>223998540
Happy for you too, sexy ;)
>>
>>223989149
>I can't really think of any other horror movie where I've been as bored and disengaged as Romero's Diary of the Dead.

Try "Survival of the Dead", then you will know real boredom (like real horror). In that, it's literally the Hatfields and the McCoys, wish I was kidding. Bad accents, bad acting, and a preposterous plot.
>>
>>223998573
Yeah ill pass, maybe for next werk
>>
>>223998560
Thanks? Another good horror movie that's largely been forgotten is a Peter Cushing vehicle called "From Beyond the Grave"?

(any special reason why I'm sexy?)

This was poor even by Korean standards.

*not sure how that question mark got there after the movie title which does not have one. Guess I'm still half asleep.
"The Vault of Horror" is also good, but I'm partial to the older classics.
>>
>>223998613
Will watch that.
>why youre sexy
I assume you are and i like to compliment people even if its strangers.

Yeah I had to throw in a good movie since this thread has people watching some truly heinous floppy poops. And thanks! You're cool. I wish this place had more cool people like you.

I second this. If anything, The Thing (1982) moves along at a fast pace. It's one of those movies that's over before you know it. And while I'm here, I think Carpenter is trolling us on "no one knowing jack squat."

>i didnt even know it was a horror until about 3/4ths of the way through
>it's not horror until Weir turns into a slasher villain because that's the extent of my understanding of the genre
The movie literally starts off with two nightmarish visions and a jump scare within the first 10 minutes. If you want your generic Alien clone here it is >>223989711

I always knew a lot of the hate for Event Horizon seems to come from dumbass monster movie fans who expected it to be another Alien type movie. I hate how much this genre just seems to attract so many ADHD retards who have zero taste or appreciation for atmospheric dread and suspenseful build ups.
>>
>>223999614
Event Horizon is great. I ignore a lot of people who try to talk about cosmic horror. The other day I clicked on a video about it just to see what the kid said and immediately had to turn it off. The very first statement pissed me off when he stated "theres only 2 ways to do cosmic horror" and immediately I was annoyed. If theres only 2 ways to do it its not a very deep genre lol, people will very quickly pigeonhole what they love into a very extreme set of criteria. Odd behavior.
