>>223960667Don't be absurd. The hotel is undeniably haunted and it being built on top of an old Indian burial ground is provided early in the film as the only plausible explanation as to why it's haunted. >>223960372>>223960667>>223961251>>223962080>>223963075Close. But an ancient burial ground doesn't have a curse on it to hunt white people per se. It's a cursed place that would hunt the natives themselves too. It's a place that's connected to the underworld. It's why they would bury their dead there. But they wouldn't spend any *time* there. It's an evil place. White people disregarding the spiritual aspect of the land and building on it anyway is like building on earthquake prone or volcanic land. It's volatile and very unsafe. The ghosts aren't Indians. Why would they be? The Indians buried there are gone already, shepharded by natives who knew what it was. All the ghosts there are of people who died in the area after the place was built. All white people who have no concept in their heads about what the place really is. The only people that sense it's a corrupt place are the son and the nigger cook. It's a cursed place because it's a curse place. Not because the Indians specifically said "fuck white people this place should hurt them, fuck them." It's not like that. It's part of nature, not part of some faggot pseudo magic that Indians think they can conjure up from nothing. It's a natural font or gyre of energy like a waterfall or a lake is with water.

The hotel itself was a malevolent entity formed by all the bad shit that has ever happened there. It starts as leftovers of distant events getting animated by supernatural abilities, ends as a semi- intelligent entity (not really a "ghost") possessing Jack. All "ghosts" in the book are little more than impersonations. The Overlook is almost the same as the warp drive spaceship from Event Horizon.

>>223970717Evil.
>>223972513I remember reading that too. Robin Williams would have made the movie way more psychotic and scary. But Jack is the most powerful actor of all time so it might not have been as kino. >>223972998Imagine peak 1980s Robin Williams on day five of a coke bender out of coke and trying to hack people to pieces with an axe. That's the type of manic energy he would have brought to the movie. Jack Nicholson is probably the greatest actor of all time. His performance was one of the best of all time and he brought a classic silent cinema movie star villain flair to the role. But I think Kubrick was right in that Williams would have been a lot scarier because his would have been more psychotic.

listen, not to dunk on the movie or anything, i just found this incredibly funny. watch the part where jack just slugs the black dude in the chest with the axe in any media player that does audio correction, at 20% speed. when your watching it at normal speed its kinda too fast to really notice, but if you watch it in super slow mo, jack does like 7 different, completely nonsensical facial expressions, including blowing his cheeks out like hes blowing up a balloon and it fucking dangerous to watch. i have cried laughing so hard, almost passing out from lack of oxygen at how fucking funny that scene is if you just watch it that way.it is the fucking funniest shit

>>223960297Wendy looks over Jack's shoulder feining surprise. Jack turns to look. She lowers her grip to the bottom of the bat handle and before he can turn back goes into an overhead swing taking advantage of her higher position and gravity. She strikes Jack on top of the skull with all her remaining strength and a loud crack sends him unconscious rolling down the stairs. While he's out cold she restrains him so tightly the Devil himself could not escape. She and Danny tend to their injuries and settle in to wait out the blizzard. Jack has grown increasingly weak in his isolation, muscle atrophy, and been intentionally starved of food to keep him physically weak. When the winter is over the cops come to collect him, repair her car, and she takes Danny home assuring him that Daddy was very sick and he's now getting the help he needs. THE END.

>>223960372This is something I was thinking about recently. Weren't most, if not all, Indian tribes nomadic? So it's not like the burial sites would have many people in them, certainly not as much as a traditional cemetery. They'd move somewhere, live and die there for a bit, then move somewhere else. Why pretend you ever had a moral imperative to take this country anyways? Why pretend it has anything to do with the behavior of the natives? You wanted the country and you could take it so you did. Any naval gazing about unproductive people not deserving life or warring trives not deserving a land, was drummed up afterwards. I don’t see why you can’t just look at things neutrally and say it was a really big war we won.
>>223974104Obviously Nicholson's over-the-top performance here was completely intentional on Kubrick's part. I think The Shining is still one of the best depictions of one man's descent into madness and chaos ever captured on film. It borders on that line between horror and comedy as it should but leans more toward disturbing than outright funny because you can't help but get caught up in the tense atmosphere and feel for Wendy and Danny. Things like schizophrenia is most certainly horrifying to live through, and it's horrifying for your loved ones to witness you go through, and yet to others still maybe it might actually look more funny than anything if you're crazy enough. I think that's the essence of mental illness if ever there was one. Jack's outward mannerisms perfectly visualizes the chaotic state of his mind just enough to still make you question if he ever actually saw and talked to the ghosts of the hotel or if it really was all in his head all along. Brilliant film, easily Kubrick's magnum opus and I'll die on that hill.
>>223960256the fact that it was built on an Indian ritual "burial ground", aka a site for blood sacrifices, means those Indians were in cahoots with these preternatural evil presences, as naturally expected. that's why white ppl built the hotel on the same spot, the power received from human sacrifice. Ullman, that slick bastard, was well aware of the evil. he works to keep the sacrifices going. part of his job, or his real job. the spot didn't become evil after booting out the poor widdle innocent injuns. it was always that way. injuns were literally bloodthirsty savages who'd commit the most heinous violent attacks imaginable. anything you can think of they did it.

I really love Collative Learning/Rob Ager's theories and videos on this. Like the one where he mapped out the hotel layout and it doesn't make sense, or how it's about Danny and Jack in a cycle of fucked up abuse, and how it has commentary on switching from gold to paper money
>>223974230It's funny how Shelly Duvall looks so much like Goofy there. Is this why there's so much Mickey Mouse stuff in Fullmetal Jacket too like the Mickey Mouse march?
>>223965877Ever hear the expression "ghosts of the past?"It was the history of america and Jack's shitty parents and parenting coming back to metaphorically haunt everyone.
>>223974060>hurr durr man make funne faec and i just barely noticed dis at da age of 38!Jesus, are you retarded? I first saw the Shining when I was 12 and noticed him making silly faces but I didn't pee my pants laughing>RLMfag
>>223980011Kubrick has a really fucking good sense of humour I dont know why that anon is being such a smug faggot about it. Dr. strangelove was blatantly a comedy and Kubrick makes Danny watch old Looney Tunes cartoons for a reason.
>>223963172Because we wouldn't be discussing it all this time later. If a piece of media is all laid out there's really nothing to discuss, it's more like objectively 'it is what it is' then
>>223963172Because if you can only see the surface level narrative you are probably mentally retarded, and you shouldn't be mentally retarded.
This movie really meant nothing. The book was about alcoholism and the hell of quitting. The movie took out just enough that it ended up about nothing. It was just random le spooky ghost stuff. There is nothing of substance there to discuss.

>>223980104>The book was about alcoholism and the hell of quitting. That's still in the movie though. The point of no return for Jack is when his urge to drink alcohol again makes him summon the ghosts at the empty bar of his own free will and their influence and hold over him becomes stronger as soon as he "drinks" the glass of bourbon. The ghosts and Jack's subsequent rampage are a metaphor for falling off the wagon and hurting your loved ones in the process same as the book.
>>223973112Anon what the fuck is that
>>223960256Jack is gay and molested Danny, The End. Kubrick also worked with and knew Arthur C. Clarke for 2001 A Space Odyssey. From what I heard, Kubrick cut all ties with Clarke shortly after 2001, and there is also a rumor that Clarke was a pedophile, which if true would help explain the pedo allegory stuff in Shining. It's also possible another thing tying into the pedo stuff is that it's an adaptation of a Stephen King novel, and due to a few things, a lot of people believe King is a pedo too, and Kubrick reformatted the book to basically out him as one. It's a long story, but probably the most interesting and deep analysis of the movie, way better than the 'It's a allegory for muh natives' shit.
>>223977348like a dull boy
>>223981086>Jack is gay and molested Danny, The EndThis is you people's answer to everything. Literally everyone is Gay. Everything is about butt sex and child molestation. You are fucking OBSESSED.
>>223981377Yeah, well you’re obsessed with things being straight, so what?
>>223981086It isn’t that deep or interesting. The fact you haven’t said anything in this word vomit about anything that ties the movie to Jack being a pedo rapist should tell anyone reading that.
>>223982470>t. one answer nancyIts a movie have fun with it
Maybe im a massive brainlet but i genuinely dont understand what the ending was trying to convey. He was always a ghost? So his wife and kids are also ghost? Or his wife just got some ghost semen and became pregnant? And whats the point of the boy having powers? The movies named after his shinning abilities, but it has very little impact on the events of the film. The boy could be a normal kid and nothing would change.
>>223960372Silly americans, if this ghost stuff was real all of europe would be a complete spookhouseI mean ghosts, it's indeed becoming a "spookhouse"
>>223982670It meant nothing. It was just a bunch of meaningless razzle dazzle. See >>223980104Trying to piece it together into theories doesn't work. Because it didn't mean anything.
>sequel upgrades your wife
>>223982470>>223981377It's a legit theory, there are analysis out there, and im too lazy to link them to you, so youll have to find them yourself.
>>223982785Why, because he fucking looked at his son in kind of a creepy, affectionate way once? There's no actual evidence for this. It's the same as every other autistic 'theory' about this movie, where it tortures a million things in a million absurd ways to try to prove itself.
>>223981086How do you "out" someone as pedo when he already wrote a page-long child gangbang scene in a sewer in excruciating detail?

>>223975463He calls it the shine and talks about how they could have conversations without opening their mouths.
>>223980056>Kubrick makes Danny watch old Looney Tunes cartoons for a reason.Yeah because there's no reason why a 5 year olds would ever watch Looney Tunes on TV in 1980 besides Kubrick having a sense of humor. Dumbass.
>>223982670I think the hotel drives people mad and then transports their souls to a pocket dimension. Hence Jack being in the group photo at the end.
>>223982670I always just took it to mean that his soul had been fully consumed by the hotel after dying>I'm sorry to differ with you, sir, but you... are the caretaker. You've always been the caretaker. I should know, sir. I've always been here. For all we know Grady had been in the picture before him
>>223972899I’m pretty sure this is a myth. In 1978 Kubrick was looking for major Hollywood stars and Robin Williams was just barely making a name for himself

>>223982907The stuff about the impossible set designs is trueThe Overlook being a representation of American violence is also true, Wendy styles her hair like a native woman at the end when Jack goes psycho mode. Some theories are legitimate and some are completely out there
>>223960893i dont get why ethan cheated on her.
>>223986224The Jack being a gay pedo theory is def true. Off the top of my head here is a few pieces of evidence/allusions in the movie.>At one point Wendy is seen watching a movie called Summer of '42, which is about a teenage engaging in a relationship (Which is implied to become sexual) with a adult woman (Minor and Adult together) and later we see Danny wearing a shirt with a '42' on it.>At one point Jack can be seen reading a Playgirl magazine (Which features pictures of naked men, implying that he's gay) and on the cover of that Playgirl magazine is a article talking about the positives of incest.>Early in the film when Danny is being inspected by a psychiatrist, we briefly see in one shot that his pants have been taken off, which I believe is something done to inspect children and determine if they have experienced sexual abuse.>The most damning is that throughout the movie, various bits in the background seem to associate Danny with bears, such as stuffed bears or a bear shirt he wears. Then, we have the scene where the guy in the bear costume is seen sucking off the guy in the tuxedo. There is a brief shot peering down a hallway with Danny at the end in a bathroom bent over at a sink, and the positioning of the shot with Danny and the shot with the bear costume sucking off the guy are both identitical, combined with Wendy's horrified reaction, it seems to be implying sexual abuse Jack put Danny through. There is a lot more, but it is my favorite theory.
>>223986781One tidbit I forgot to mention is that in the scene peering down the hallway with Danny at the end, there is a rainbow decal on the door, which may or may not be another specific hint at Jack being gay.

>>223960557Based Chosen, stupid goyim
>>223986781>>223986806But why? That doesn’t really fit into the broader movie.
>>223971241What about the story where Kubrick slipped her LSD then waterboarded her and threatened her with a live chainsaw?
>>223960256It’s about a guy who loses his sanity while a bunch of ghosts in a hotel make him one of them. The book does a better job of displaying the loss of sanity aspect because your actually in his head and it was about Stephen kings struggle with alcohol or something like thatThe shining is a good book but the movie is what really cemented it as iconic in my opinion even if Stephen king tried to downplay it but the visuals and how it was made with Kubrick made it even better so it does make senseYou moron
>>223983735Why put serious in quotes, do you think Mrs. Doubtfire is just as serious a character as the one in Good Will Hunting.
>>223986781>>At one point Jack can be seen reading a Playgirl magazine (Which features pictures of naked men, implying that he's gay) and on the cover of that Playgirl magazine is a article talking about the positives of incest. This is stuff that people found out decades later with a high definition home video copy. My take is that it was a joke on set that Jack Torrance is essentially reading gay porn in public
>>223988335Technically neither does the native theory, t's called allegory and hidden narratives. It's not directly stated in the film's main narrative, but it's clearly hinted at in small details throughout the main story, telling a secret story.
One thing that bothered me is that Hallorann knows what goes on at the Overlook when the caretakers stay there, and in the scenes that show him going from Florida to Colorado he doesn't take anything for defense. You would figure a scene like that would be included for context but the only thing I can guess is that he basically sacrificed himself to break the loop of the Overlook.
