I'm looking to visit Japan in 2028 and curious to know how other people planned their trip

2 years isn't enough time. you should plan your trip at least 10 years ahead of time
    >>
    90 days
    No planning
    everywhere with a McDonalds
    $100 per day

I planned my trip with a friend in a pretty retarded way. We looked at accomodations on booking.com and simply chose two that we liked. We completely ignored locations. Only a few weeks before the trip we finally checked where our accomodations are located in japan. The first one was in katashina, a small village in the middle of the mountains in gunma. The second one was in myouko-kougen in nagano between nagano city and niigata. It's famous for skiing, but we went there in fall so no snow yet. We planned to stay a week at each location, but after 3 days of hiking in katashina we booked a hotel in tokyo for 2 days and went there instead.

I'm not sure I would do it like that again, because we had to drive around quite a bit >2000km in 2 weeks. There simply was not much public transportation in those areas. That said there definitely were some unique experiences:
    Katashina:
    - everyone was really friendly and interested because they haven't seen tourists in ages
    - nice onsens and hiking area
    - eating in restaurants always ended up in sitting with locals, getting strange food for free (bear meat, horse sashimi, raw and bloody squid), because they wanted to see our reaction
    - old grandma restaurant owner overslept and her kitchen was not ready when we arrived, so she offered us to eat traditional breakfast with her

    Myouko-kougen:
    - best sushi I ever had
    - meeting two black bears in the middle of the village while taking a walk
    - we mainly did daytrips near nagano city (temples, castles, wasabi fields) and niigata (beach, aquarium)
    - on some days I was extremely relaxed here, even fell asleep while sitting several times

Costs were around 2k€ for each of us for the whole trip (flights, hotels, car, sim card, food)
