What sort of spyware? If you set up a VPN on your home router, and then have a travel wifi repeated connect to it, then the work laptop will connect to the Internet using your home IP when it's connected to the travel wifi. This works for usual IP checks. Now, they might have more advanced spyware which is another thing altogether.
    >>
    >>2919050
His DNS should also be piped through that VPN too
    >>
    >>2918954
I work for a bank in German and control these types of systems and can check where users connect from. Vietnam, Thailand, North America, Lebanon are the usual spots. I only report those traveling "back home" to india. They never fill in the correct forms to do this so they always get fired. Seeing that "off boarding ticket for Ranshit" or whatever Star Wars name fuck is after reporting him is always satisfying.
    >>
    >>2919075
Is it because they don't use any VPN to try to pretend they are still connecting from home? Or do you have some more advanced insidious tracking software?
    >>
    >>2919074
Everything should go through the VPN yes. I'm just wondering if they can do things like, scan all the wifi spots around, and then compare them to known mapped wifi hubs and send that location. That's kind of what airtags do.
    >>

    >I'm just wondering if they can do things like, scan all the wifi spots around, and then compare them to known mapped wifi hubs and send that location. That's kind of what airtags do.
they cant do that through software. if there is no physical GPS tracker on it you're safe.

most likely their accountants had them set that as the official rule to cover their asses for taxes, they probably dont actually care about enforcing it, it's just that the logistics of having a bunch of team members in different tax jurisdictions is a nightmare

    >>

Doesn't always work especially if you need to run a SW VPN on your laptop, VPN over VPN doesn't always play nice.
    >>2919075
You're risking your job and legal repercussions for that? lol actual larp

IT guy here who works abroad, my boss doesn't care about me traveling but we have managers in other departments who care about their people going out. The #1 way we get people is through their phone self reporting them, VPN outages or they want to connect to inflight/airport WiFi and do a quick disconnect to accept those ToS is a gotcha. Their email be it Google, O365, etc all often will self report in logs that they blipped out of policy during those times. A good amount of 2FA apps now have options to detect if a VPN is being used as well I know Okta does at the very least. Basic Helpdesk troubleshooting is a dead give away when "things are slow" and our tier 1 HD tech knows to do a tracert seeing some weird +200ms hops to our services with obvious VPN hops. If you have admin rights Wiregaurd VPN from work->home or friends home is doable until their internet blips too.

Other notable reasons why we detect you're at some place you shouldn't be from managers are:
-you sounded drunk on a meeting during a Friday because you forgot timezones from Asia/Europe to US fuck you up and we have to look for weird logins
-you self reported via social media to someone you are friends with in the company
-out of band management on your laptop(mostly lenovos that do this) where the bios can contact cloud support/management
-one of the apps you use to MFA in wants geolocations enabled
-the VPN you are using doesn't do a killswitch and has split tunneling rules to where apps can still geolocate
-people who have to have their cameras on for standups/meetings have their rooms look change

Silly but the weather is horrible/dangerous at their "home" but because they are abroad didn't think about anything at home and act like nothing is happening during a fucking hurricane.

    >>
    >>2919097
    >you sounded drunk on a meeting during a Friday
I do this all the time working from home as well, how is that a giveaway?
    >>
    >>2919097
Are you telling us your company snoops on your employees' private phones?
    >>
    >>2919108
Depends, we have an HR thing drawn up that if you intend to WFH or "work within the USA" aka Return To Office that work email or apps on your phone are subject to a few things like device enrollment+tracking. That's pretty standard for companies that allow you to put your corporate email on your personal device. Naturally everyone does it because they want to be able to walk away from their PC and dip a bit while still looking online for their emails/meets.

We don't go through your device but you agree when enrolling we can wipe it during a lost/stolen device and have the ability to ensure basic security (reviewing location/IP data that the phone checks into with), ensuring not jailbroken, lock screen, etc.
    >>
    >>2919111
aka avoid* the Return To Office
    >>
    >>2919112
does it detect ladyboy poop on my dick? I mean on your dick. On one’s dick. Not mine.
    >>
    >>2919050
There are other tricks to catch you. Like GPS or scanning for local wifi. And if you use software that needs phone verification, good luck.

    >>2919084
    >most likely their accountants had them set that as the official rule to cover their asses for taxes
It's actually pretty easy to arrange the tax situation if your boss isn't a mega-corp that auto-denies everything out of the ordinary. It's a generic """"risk management""""" thing for larger companies to ban working from overseas.
    >>
    >>2918954
Put a handgun to the laptops head and say "nobody move or the laptop gets it!" while you slowly walk backwards into an airplane
    >>
    >>2919111
That sounds quite illegal. There's no way I would let my employer ever touch my personal phone.
    >>
    >>2919155
I forget that this board probably has a remote workforce of at best 1/3rd the posters.
    >das must be illegal
It's not, at least in the USA and in most industries. Sure if you're government, a bank, or HIPAA compliant I am sure a personal device has stipulations but if you agree to a contract companies can do it. It's very very common especially in mid size companies.

As someone who's been the one building these policies on the other side of the table the conversation goes like this after HR and legal sign off:
Okay you can work from home we set up so Gmail requires a lock screen and basic context aware settings for you to work from-
    >UHH DAS ILLEGAL YOU GOTTA PAY FOR MAH FONE
Oh okay if you let me finish, if you don't wish to participate in this WFH program IT offers, in office positions hours are 8am-5pm mon-friday
    >actually I have a spare phone I can use for that I just remembered

    >>
    >>2919177
Anon that's the generous version of what corpo world has been doing compared to other companies where they go full on hard on for return-to-office. Many companies just up and went "you are coming back on X date"

I've grown to see IT departments as the male-counterpart to HR.

I'm baffled you'd even need to question why HR, and subsequently legal, wouldn't be involved in company policies and data access. This is basic business administrative tasks when you are enacting or enforcing company policies. Holy fuck you're like the brand new T1 helpdesk people from college we sometimes hire who don't realize that the paperwork and job offers they sign are a legal and binding contract.

Literally like cashier 80IQ take, pic you?
    >>
Yea, it is because people working in different countries have all sorts of tax implications. Not to mention that you're not allowed to work with a tourist visa in pretty much every country.

Everyone sort of looked the other way during the plandemic but times have changed.

    >>2919155
I think a lot of these companies will get you a corporate phone but people want to BYOD for some reason (I WFH but have a corporate phone).
    >>
Already called out the remote larpers, they won't let you for tax purposes digital nomad.
    >>
    >>2919176
If you want me to be reachable out of the office, you provide me with a company phone. I am not installing spyware on my personal phone. If your company doesn't have a solid WFH program then plenty of others do. Seriously IT Karens can be as bad as HR Karens.
    >>
W2 to 1099 independent contractor. Can work anywhere as long as you have proper work visas in the country you work from. Less stability and more freedom.
    >>
    >>2919280
You're actually being the Karen thinking the employer has to bend over to hire you. The market is no longer a choose whatever company hiring spree from covid, it's very much a employers market of pick and choose.

Having option A or B is very reasonable, I'll gladly use my old phone for work shit while i get a 100/mo stipend just to have it sit in my bag in my hotel/airbnb room throughout the day or maybe to the gym at night.

    >If your company doesn't have a solid WFH program then plenty of others do.
Okay great, but I got really bad news for you with the way the market is shifting especially with AI coming down companies have more reason than ever to start facilitating people in office.
    >>
    >>2919176
hows that boot taste? enjoy being middle management? the remote markets more competitive but if you want to be in the office day be my guest, just try not to latch onto the boomer office 'culture' that needs to go. also why the fuck are you even here

    >males
    >systems administration
They can go into any bathroom and you know it
    >>
    >>2919359
Not middle management senior IT, so it's pretty common to sit on a call with management and answer in layman's terms what your security policies you built in whatever infrastructure you run does. It was part of covid for most anyone working in IT(who wasn't Helpdesk or jr. Admin) to come up with WFH policies and guidelines; and get it processed for implementation.
    >>
    >>2919287
It's a security policy, not just a tax one. I'll probably have to find a smaller company to negotiate that with once I have more experience.
    >>
You’ve either got to work for small firms without a functioning IT department, or as an independent contractor/freelancer
I don’t work for corporate cunts because of this
    >>
    >>2919469
How do you approach a smaller firm about this? It seems weird to spring on them after getting a job offer.
