I went to one and everyone staired at me. It was super awkward. It was mixed men and women naked together. They kept saying "no no no, please leave, Japanese only". I told them I was Asian too and they needed to accept me. I'm not even brown so it was just racism. I stayed in such a bizzare "hostel" in Nishinari that the place had dirt cheap, clean private rooms and zero bums around BUT no shower. At all. So I pretty much had to go to the local neighborhood sento to wash myself.
Was fine, really. The grandpas gave me a puzzled look at first but stopped giving a shit a minute later.

This story is completely made up. First, standard public baths (Sento) in Japan are strictly separated by gender by law; there are no "mixed naked" urban Sentos. The Kyoto one isn't far from Kyoto station and is much bigger and more popular than the one I went to in Tokyo. I actually went back to it when I did a 2nd trip to Japan the next year. The first time I went was more eventful than the 2nd time so I'll tell you what happened.

I had to give the customers their requested items e.g. towel, shaver and body wash, make sure they didn't break any rules (e.g. having tattoos or going into the wrong gender's side of the bathhouse), and clean up after them. If the water was too cold I also had to add wood to the furnace. I left after a few months because the owner was too creepy.
