I plan on traveling from New Jersey to California. Circumstances require I drive, which would take 43 HOURS.

Could anyone please give a list of service stops/hotels to stop at, and an estimate of how far I'll be in the trip by then?

Depends on how far you want to drive each day. You didn't even say what part of California you've moving to. From the map, it looks like Sacramento.

One thing I will say, if you're going before winter, take the route Chicago-Omaha-Denver-Salt Lake City-South Lake Tahoe-Sacramento

It will only add 90 minutes, but it's way more scenic driving through Colorado, Utah and around Lake Tahoe. You can't really depend on that route in mid to late November if it snows.

I didn't mean to add SLC. You would skip that and go south through Ely if you're going to Sacramento.

I've done DC to LA, it's not that bad, basically follow this shouldn't be hard at all to get there in a week.
1st stop try to be at least Harrisonburg or Roanoke
2nd stop outskirts of Memphis DO NOT STAY DOWNTOWN
    3rd stop Amarillo
4th stop Flagstaff (PHX if you are LA bound)
5th stop: IDK unless you say which way you're going.

I used a combo of Bestwesterns and Holiday inn expresses, if you're trying to save on travel allowance use extended stays. Avoid Americas best value inn and so on. Assuming you leave next month, stick south El Nino is kicking up a shit ton of moisture and it's going to be a snowy season.

IDK if by cali you mean LA like I had to do for relocating, but Flagstaff should be your "do I go south to LA/SD" or up and over for SJ/SF.

    TIPS:
Don't bother trying to do the "ole route 66" meme it's dead up until flagstaff and some small iconic places in SoCal, none of it is worth a damn
Have some tunes downloaded as internet is slow in some points
Don't try to do too much caffeine as a caffeine crash is worse than anything
Valuables always in the trunk anything you don't mind losing in the back seats
After Amarillo make sure you fill up if under half empty
Realize past OK line heading west cops will be on the lookout for drug mules, ALWAYS be polite and obey what they say don't pull any shit like my roommate did when he moved out here

Big texan is good, flagstaff has some neat eateries, etc. Without knowing your timeframe to do this all during it's hard to give more advice.

Yeah, I've done this drive, though I used RV parks because I'm a self-sustaining chad. Drive to Columbus, then either thug it out to NW Arkansas or settle for nowheresville Indiana (I recommend Cicero). From there, cross into Colorado, or if you're feeling bold take it straight through Zion and into Vegas. From there, hit Reno and you're good to go.

So then, stop wherever you feel like stopping each day and get a room. Why do you need to plan anything?
