I wouldn't say the publicly transport is brilliant there nor anything else really. Their trains are rivatised so they can cost literally hundreds of pounds (though usually tens of) and the price varies depending on if it's a peak or you book on advance etc. I have been personally on a train there from London to Birmingham where they skipped my stop without any notice and then refused to refund me. In Germany it's called a "Radio Tax Contribution" but it's the same concept, you go to prison for not paying the tax on 'radio' (legally defined as virtually any electronic device capable of playing streamed audio these days).
