Went to Tokyo for 8 days 2 years ago and loved it
Going to Japan next year, this time for 2 weeks and planning on booking hotels for 2-3 locations throughout the trip, preferably at least one urban location and one more rural out there location
    >>
    Osaka and Kyoto obviously.

I really dug Beppu out in Kyushu. Bus ride from Fukuoka or Nagasaki. It is a hot spring town, but has a bit of an old resort town that time forgot kind of feel with hot spring steam everywhere. Early moring walks are a serious vibe. Some rugged bathhouses there and some fancier ones along with the Hell pools.

Kansai has a lot going for it in addition to Osaka and Kyoto. There's Nara, Himeji, Iga, Wakayama. Not to mention it's an hour and a half away from Hiroshima by Shinkansen.

Any reccomended towns to stop off in on the Shinkansen?
    >>
    >>2907968
You've got 12 more years until the Shinkansen to Sapporo is finished.
    >>
    >>2907972
But since it goes all the way to Hakodate, if you transfer there, you can get to Sapporo.

    Let me rephrase my question

Any recomended Shitkansun stops between Tokyo and Hakodate?

Nta but take the fucking plane to cts and go to sapporo and base yourself out of there

Sure theres technically shit to see and do if you wanna shinkansen from tokyo to hakodate and then get on different trains or whatever; but this is like flyover country type stuff

If u dead set, theres nikko (big old shrine complex) and sendai (big city) and zao (fox village)

Plane's cheaper than trains and much faster and very convenient, and then you have more time to do things in hokkaido
    >>
    >>2908367
    > base out of sapporo
Yeah depending how much time I have I think it would be cool to fly one way and then shitkansen one way and see wtfs up with Aamori, Morioka or jaunt to Akita
train rides also give me a boner so its worth the extra $ for daddy ( thats me )
but anyway it sounds like maybe you can reccomend some Hokkaido spots or Sapporo things to do ?

Hit okinawa for a week. They are a little racist if you look american but its an amazing place. Great beaches, food is amazing, not too expensive. Im unsure if they still have a banana show.

They have the worlds largest tug of war every year in Naha or Nago, cant remember. But shits so big it doesnt really move. Great festivals for cherry blossom season.

Spend at least two days in Nikko. The place itself is a asian redwoods-style forest with multiple temples, some UNESCO world heritages. The nips themselves have the quote: "you can't say marvelous untill you've been to Nikko"

Have you been to Yufuin, which is about an hour by train from Beppu?
It’s a hot spring resort for those who want to relax in peace—the complete opposite of Beppu, which is geared toward active travelers.

tokyo is the best place in japan because it's the only city big enough to absorb the massive amounts of tourists. They have 45 million japs there, so none of the infrastructure or amenities is significantly bogged down by even 1 million tourists.

I started in Fukuoka this trip but quickly went to Tokyo because Fukuoka was way too overtouristed. Getting a room for rent was near impossible, they wanted Harajuku prices for places a 30 minute walk up a mountain on the last stop of the last train station on a secondary train line. Most parts of Tokyo are unironically cheaper. Today I am staying 2 blocks away from Akihabara for 2000 yen, in Fukuoka the cheapest rooms were starting at double that. Fukuoka isn't even a big city, it's about two blocks big, but right now it is completely swamped. It has westerners there, from australia and europe, but the biggest groups are the koreans and taiwanese. Every tourist there acts like cattle and the forward facing service workers are sick of tourists. The japanese girls I approached there were friendly, that's one group who doesn't seem sick of the tourists apparently, but the logistics weren't really viable. If you go to a tourist area in Fukuoka and you approach people, you will see that out of 10 people, around 9 of them aren't japanese, and if they are japanese, they were often travelers from a different part of japan. I can't speak for the other places, but I imagine Hokkaido is the same, and I heard the same thing about Osaka. If you want the pure Japanese experience, you have to go to the big city in Tokyo to escape diversity, ironically.

Is it viable to go sightseeing there if I'm not hiring a car? I haven't driven outside of home before and I'm not sure if I would be confident doing so. In the past I've traveled with my mother who does the driving - and has much experience driving in countries around the world - while I help with navigation etc. I have about 2 weeks by myself around late November and was looking for somewhere interesting outside Tokyo or Osaka. The other place I was eyeing was Kushimoto but not for any particular reason. I'm a /p/ fag and enjoy history and shrines.

I think you should take the train to a city near your destination, and then rent a car for the parts where trains and buses aren't convenient.

Once you have visited all the pilgrimage sites in Shikoku, you should go to Okuno-in on Mount Koya to report to Kobo Daishi and express your gratitude, saying, “Thank you for watching over me and keeping me safe throughout my journey.” This is the proper way to complete the pilgrimage.

    >one urban location
Osaka is the "True Heart of Japan"; would highly recommend going; 0 tourists and Western culture hasn't really reached it. If you have been to Tokyo, Osaka is the antithesis you didn't know you craved. Expect the best eateries you've ever been to, and the warmest people you've ever met. You WILL stand out as a white person, but just roll with it and enjoy it, be the life of the party wherever you go and I promise you you will have a fucking blast.

    >one more rural out there location
There is a remote town called Nara that time simply forgot. It feels like straight out of a Gibli movie, not just how it looks, but how it *feels*. I'm not a religious man, but I swear, there is something about this place that makes you feel like the boundary to the spirit realm has never been thinner. Only downside: you definitely need to speak Japanese here, not fluently but probably N3/N4 at least.

An extreme obsession with Japan— "Japanophilia" —is typically driven by underlying psychological needs such as identity formation, escapism, social alienation, and compensatory coping mechanisms
