Hello buggers, here's Chapter 45 of The Howler
    >https://archiveofourown.org/works/61103611/chapters/253554216

It's a bit shorter than I'd like, but I wanted to get something out and I was afraid jumping into another scene would end up doubling the word count before I could get to an end point. Also, from this point forward I've got nothing to do but focus on finishing this, so I hope to get the next chapters out ASAP to make up for it.

A short but nevertheless eventful chapter, the Bleed Apex is a very crafty smugbug. Her actions may have turned this coop from a longshot to somewhat good odds when she turned he Fyrix Capital into a deadzone.
I wonder what the Fyrix social media is like when this is all happening.

As the other anon said, short but eventful, and what a tactic they've employed, will be quite intriguing to see how this plays out, and whether any other side effects come from a communications blackout for the capital given the other aspects of the current situation. Also, interesting to consider the threll who never had a life outside the bleeds, machines and a society that was merely stories and accounts rather than part of a life lived for them.

The Howler, obviously (it's been posted above)
Apart from that, from the reading list in the OP, My Waspfu and The Hitchhiker have the most substance from my recollection. Mark of Shame is alright, but it's unfinished and hasn't been updated in nearly a year. There's also Three Quests of Cordyll, as well as the Unprofessional series (it's M/M) from the same author as Howler, so they're very good. I know you specified Ao3, but I'll go ahead and shout out Nor Crystal Tears and Children of Time for good bug novels.

I missed you all, my fellow bugchuds. How do you think big bugs maintain their temperature internally in hot places, apart from staying out of the sun, air conditioning, and other external methods? As far as I'm aware, bugs don't sweat and they're not usually at a size where heat is troublesome.

They would probably have evolved to develop some form of thermoregulation, pushing heat towards the abdomen where maybe the spiracles could work to siphon heat out into the surrounding air in some fashion or maybe just air passing over the abdomen cools the hemolymph or something, overall cooling the bug. Could also have chitin scales or something as insulation against heat

    >>86091169
    >Who'd have thought HFY's better when written by an actual human?
TBF, a lot of HFY stories are written by humans and are still bad. Issues usually is that the stories feels like shallow caricatures, being that of an actual alien species, where they are amazed by some stupid shit like humans breathing oxygen, meeting the humans (whom are either a "noble warrior race" or like in NoP, this "overly saintly" race). The strength of the Howler is within the efforts of making everything feel "grounded", where everything that happens has some form of sensible explanation, like the fact that Eigen's successes against the Fyrix is mostly on the fact that the Fyrix weren't equipped with handling an alien that is 3 times bigger than any sophont species they encountered, in which they ended up adapting to very quickly to that fact. It's small thing like that which helps making the Fyrix feel like an actual thinking alien instead of being a cheerleader of the human's might.

Oh man, in a Cas:U thread? That's hilarious to me on more levels than you can possibly imagine. I hope you enjoy the full release!

I'll admit, I've read NoP before. I don't really consider my work HFY, even though it hits some similar themes. It's mostly an excuse to talk about aliens and have someone hug a bug. On the whole I'd say I enjoyed NoP, but it became a very braindead 'enjoyed' (though the sequel was abject trash and not even dumb fun.) There were so many things that irritated me, and so I'd be lying if I didn't say it was an inspiration, insofar as I wanted to make something that *didn't* do all the shit that annoyed me. Apart from the incredibly simplistic human worship is how every single alien race was some anthro Earth animal, and every culture was interchangeable with one another. I know it's rich coming from the guy who clearly made his race an anthro insect, but since they're carrying the plot I wanted them to be at least somewhat easy to imagine while still being their own thing.

I could talk at length of all the things I disliked about it, and I'm sure my thing will forever be a hundredth as popular because it's about bugs and tries to have a little more verve, but it always makes me happy hearing people like my particular spin on it.

Hello, here's Chapter 46 of The Howler
    >https://archiveofourown.org/works/61103611/chapters/254704366

This one clocks in at 3.6k words. It was definitely the right decision to cut the other one short. We're back on our favorite three bugs as well as the military's attempt to keep on top of things. The howler is making it very difficult for them. I'm definitely going to be changing some names when I do a final edit on this. After seeing Zharr and Zyrrs' name appear in the same chapter for the first time, I knew it must be done. Zharr was originally a bit of a play on Tsar, but I might make it Sharr or something. I might also rename Nithry to Kithry to avoid conflict with Nestiri. It's close enough that I can accept it even after getting attached to their names.

Also, thanks to Steve for the cute Fyrix art

Very cool to see the other side of the suppression field movement, going to take quite the effort to even get anywhere near Eigen in this state and as stated the ability to negotiate is not exactly at its best. Funny to see Nestiri twist the knife on just how bad the situation, will say that I did almost read his name as Nithry a time though so changing one of their names like how you mentioned would probably be for the best. Interesting how much respect and nobility stays up even at a time like this, the line "stop an attack on the center of all our pride" is of particular note with how it frames things amongst the concern of the well-being of the population. Certainly look forward to how all this plays out, especially with other threll communities taking advantage of the situation to escape as well. Also, nice art there, think I might have to get my own comm from that guy at some point

It's not as bad as the Starsector situation. That one targeted specific mods from people they disagreed with politically and bricked your entire save. Not to run defense for Maltiez, but unlike that, it's easier to attribute his actions to retardation rather than outright malice.

Even though he'd been hired by the team, the crash code was in his personal mod libraries he made beforehand. The crash code only worked in multiplayer and was intended to target a specific cheat mod that people were using maliciously to ruin multiplayer games. The issue was that it also triggered on completely benign mods and obfuscated the cause of the crash, making it impossible for those modders to address the issue. Again, extremely retarded behavior, but not entirely malicious.

People are right to complain, and the Discord moderator's response to the situation was horrible, but Discord mods are all basement virgin NEETs; it's not like they've taken courses on crisis management. My only rankle is that they kept Maltiez on the dev team, but still, it's not bad enough that I'd consider blacklisting the game for life. And to play devils advocate, some of the pearl clutching comes from people who were simply annoyed that it was interfering with their cheat clients.

Certainly not, technology will always overcome natural advantages, especially if they have a multi-millennia head start with it. I doubt Eigen would have any chance against that walker even if wasn't running on fumes like he was back there, as that would be way too much of a stretch. That Apex's plan was a real gamechanger.
Now we at the final mile of the story, not too far to go.
