    Ive been buying Optimus Primals.
    >>
    >>11930627
the red on the forearms was always really weird to me. It should've been a gradient if possible. Love those early Universe energon scar effects though
    >>
    >>11930634
seems weird to have him named Optimus Primal in general, but it's interesting. looks almost like a prototype
    >>
    >>11930617
inorite. it's just little things, weird limb placements, weird everything
    >>
    >>11930634
yeah, between that and the war paint and the yellow shit on his face, he's just.... weird. but you know, it's a good mold, I like seeing recolors. if I had one, I'd definitely just try to fix the colors to a bit more natchy, like I did with Sandstorm
    >>
    >>11930638
How so? He's basically meant to be a post-Beast Machines Primal. Beast Wars characters changed colors often and Primal more than anyone. All of his forms have totally different decos.
    >>
    >”Everyone loves DJW and animated” Animated”
LMAO! Not even inside this tiny echo chamber let alone the real world. Animated is easily the ugliest, gayest, shittiest Transformers has ever been. Only Beast Machines gives Animated a run for its money in awful designs and only IDW outdid its faggotry.
    >>
    >>11930640
A lot of that going on in JP mecha at the time. A lot of BM's toyline had concepts done by anime mecha designers and that post-Eva "lets get weird" attitude is there.
Nightviper is designed by the same person who did the super popular Gundam Astray, which is kinda bizarre to me
    >>
    >>11930647
Animated and Beast Machines at least feel like intentional styles. Cyberverse and to an extent Earthspark are the worst to me because they don't even feel like what the style should be, but someone's misinterpretation of better drawn designs.
Animated and BM were both made by people who know how to draw, even if the designs are weird or ugly. Cyberverse and Earthspark are like, people who can't grasp mecha.
    >>
    >>11930649

SS86 Screamer’s such a nice figure, but it’s just my luck the only one of him I’ve ever been able to find has some stress on one of the pins by his wing. I think it was from some excess plastic that was there that fell out after I poked at it, but I’m worried this’ll eventually be an issue later on…
    >>
    >>11930648
Disagree. JP mecha has always been amazing and looked cool, until pretty recently, where it's started to look kinda goony and overproduced. kinda like your example here, actually. that's newer, isn't it?
even as weird as Eva was, they still had style. everything 'agreed' with everything. BM looks more like... the studio that did Men in Black / the Godzilla 98 movie tv series. Way more abstract biology.

Anon that design is over 20 years old now. I would say it’s more polished than Beast Machines designs, sure, but the point is the weird proportions sort of start from that.

I have applied the DNA Kit and Toyhax decals and can't think of any other improvements to do so my Vector Prime is finished to me
I THINK Micronus may be my next one but I need to double check over the kits I might have wanted for him
    >>
    >>11930669
That would require them to remember Universe 1 existed
    >>
    >>11930666
Hmm, maybe. This one here is a much better example, with his shoulders attached so high and his head so buried into his shoulders. the only thing the previous one was guilty of is the arms being kinda long, which is fine if you do it right.
You would be hardpressed to find me examples that do the kinds of things BM was doing, with the pelvis hanging way down below the hips, legs having extra joints that don't make sense, and attachment points seeming about as random as can be. And that's before getting into the beast modes, which.. robot animals are their own snarl. even fewer can do them well.
    >>
    >>11930669
it's such a meh mold. it did a few things very right (arm guns yay!), but a couple perplexingly wrong (why do his toes bend DOWN, but can't swivel around to form the little elephant toes he's supposed to have in robot mode as his heels?)
and a few others sorta half right, but still off (nice to have a belly cover, and clever job tucking it away in robot mode, but you made it a FURRY belly cover, which is a different kind of gorilla entirely)
    >>
    >>11930681
    also: human toes. very strange.

I wasn't all that bothered with Onslaught not including a weapon, but I decided to search for a gun for him on a whim. Surprisingly enough I immediately found what I consider the most perfect one for him on sale. I wasn't expecting to like how it looks with it as much as I do, it's amazing what a single piece of plastic can do for a figure. It just looks so RIGHT now.

He definitely needed better hands and Million $ problem solver, Paint the insides of the Combiner Frame Arms or just color them in general so it'd color match Vortex and Blast off
They go face to face and aren't visible in Trailer mode ANYWAYS so at worst you would have one side facing outward under the Trailer that's the default Grey/Silver

It's confirmed that Wildwheel is at least a retool of something else
    >>
    >>11930735
    because it's prohibitlvely expensive.
couple hundred years ago, you'd be calling movable type a heresy because you don't have to pay a scribe to hand-calligraph each letter.
look, I'm an artist, and a voiceover guy, and it's frustrating that just as I got good, I got replaced by machines. But all that proves is that I was never really 'in demand.' they just wanted cheap, throwaway garbage, not real products. Because the majority of this kinda thing is garbage. this is a promotional ad, it's going to be tossed after the con happens.
    >>
    >>11930739

    >>11930731
    >i'm sure they have 800 dollars just lying around.
It doesn't cost 800 bucks to make a decent promo image. And they've had no problem making real promos for every convention in the past, so cost definitely isn't an issue here. On top of that, if you even find yourself complaining about cost in order to justify this, you're basically giving a tacit admission that this sort of AI slop sucks horrendously bad, because if it really was all that great, you'd be able to brag about its supposed awesomeness instead of coming up with excuses for its existence.
    >>
    >>11930729
That is pretty fucking dogshit. Christ that's cringe
I guarantee they got dunked and blown out on socials and still ran it

His very own, pic related. Found a loose one and after haggling got it for ten euros shipping included. Too much for a piece of plastic, but not bad for 40 years old vintage plastic I guess.

And I know it's silly, but I can't help but smile when I think I reunited this old weapon that lost his owner decades ago with the newest version of that very same dude that never had his own weapon. And they look perfect together to boot, like they were always part of a set.
    >>
    >>11930773
Oh wow the original G1 gun fits his hand? Shit I shoulda just gotten one of those. Oh well. If I had, I'd end up making a G1 Bruticus. Did you read the comics that go along with it? Unicron rebuilt everyone and they have energon radiation (the silver stuff on robot modes face) It kills me how literally no one in America/China/Jaoan ever made a new version of this color scheme.
    >>
    >>11930731
they could've easily made an agreement with some artist in the area to pay them a more modest cost while including tickets to the con and whatever perks to make it worthwhile. Id be honest, If a con offered to comp me a weekend pass plus cover my lunch at the con and a little cash on the side to do some art, i'd take it.

Yeah, I checked before buying it, a good bunch of G1 weapons used 5mm ports, Scramble City combiners included. Nonetheless it was a tad too tight of a fit so I slightly sanded it.
Something cool that I didn't expect is that it's big enough to look good in Bruticus hands too.

It's just kinda lame because TF conventions have always had a big fanart culture since the beginning. I will guarantee you there's TF fanartists out there who would make you a flyer for a few toys. It wouldn't be as cheap as free, but it promotes community, the artist can be a personality fans might want to support or meet like how Dan Khanna and Don Figueroa came up in the fandom, and it's just nicer overall.
This is just 2002 era photoshop of a drawing of Cryotek's beastmode in a photo of Chicago, but it's charming and memorable. The jankiness that human confidence provides gives it it's own charm. The TFCon Orlando poster is just kinda forgettable,Grimlock isn't really on model to any design and looks like a generic robot t.rex, the Decepticons he's damaging are a mess. The rendering is really nice, but it's missing something. that sort of passion for the subject that ensouls the best art.

    >He's entirely right tho hey Wildwheel was actually a cool design
He's not even the best of his archetype. Without the hat, gun and poncho he would literally just be another guy. His vehicle mode is the most generic cybertronian car ever, but you probably wouldn't know that because he doesn't even have fucking wheels or anything. It's a testament to how even when they "try" its still shitty, uninteresting and gay. That other anon is right, none of these people actually understand what makes transformers designs work, even bayformers got this right in the earlier years.
Now look at this design. Take a good look at how the wild west outlaw motif is baked into his design, How the cobra's hood forms the poncho or how the alt mode being a king cobra ties together bot the western desert themes and the robot cowboy theme with the arm being serving as a whip/lasso. All you need to do is take a look and you immediately know everything about him. You can't take the aesthetic out of him because it's a fundamental aspect to the design where it's a supplementary aspect of the former
    >>
    >>11931017
the funny thing is character wise Cohlada isn't really a cowboy type. He's an arrogant rookie cadet type.
    >>

He and Break both do however the lone wolf western archetype adds to it too. Break is much closer to the arrogant rookie/shonen protagonist which is why is design with the spiky tuft and bright colors is so flamboyant

The preview image of animated generated insane amounts of hate. The initial response was basically universally negative and the toy reveals where treated much the same.

When the first couple episodes came out though it was a different story. Reception was very positive. There were still people that disliked the designs, but they look way better in motion, and the pretty dark undertones from the introduction of the deceptions to how badly the autobots got brutalized by just Starscream had people wanting to see more. Then they got let down. Season one was slow as fuck villain of the week stuff that was generally boring outside some occasional nice character introductions.

The turning point though is when Megatron comes back. The shows quality increases substantially, and the stakes ramp up steadily all the way to the end.

We all knew it was canceled pretty much off the rip, so there was a whole lot of dissatisfaction at how the ending was extremely quick, and with how open it was there are people that want it to continue to this day.

The big thing with animated is that many fans from the peak of the franchise (2002-2012~) see it and prime as the last real transformers shows. Anything after was just rescuebots or evergreen kidslop and the garbage quality of the "for adults" shows has made that gap way worse.

It was a risky choice but the slow season 1 start was important.
Yeah the human villains kinda suck but at least they're the ones losing every week and not the Decepticons. When they do show up it remains significant and they don't stop seeming powerful until Season 3 when a bunch have been captured.

nta but for all we know that photo of Chicago was original, licensed or in public domain. The photoshop may or may not have been legally purchased. And even if not the unique idiosyncrasies that comes from a human choosing to use whatever assets they chose makes it more charming and memorable. It's more interesting to me when there's a mind behind creation, you can't interact or converse with a machine in the same way without feeling it's all smoke and mirrors.

TFRiD 2015 did a lot better than Prime in sales and rarings, which makes me wonder if soon we're gonna have a wave of fans who will talk about how it's overhated and how it's their nostalgic series that got them into TF.
Right now the youngest fans truly active in the fandom seem to mainly be kids who grew TFP and got massively disappointed that RiD was a kid's show when they became teenagers. But RiD15 did well with actual kids, younger ones maybe but still a big audience.
    >>
    >>11931214
Eh? It's a licensed convention...the piece of Cryotek art was either licensed or likely drawn by someone like Dan Khanna.
Are you going for the angle that Cryotek was a redeco and thus a remix of an existing asset? Even so he was a redeco done in house and even his name comes from another IP Hasbro owned. It's not anywhere close to a gotcha, nothing is stolen.

    >And even if not the unique idiosyncrasies that comes from a human choosing to use whatever assets they chose makes it more charming and memorable.
Well said. The thing that matters more to me about art than actual technical proficiency is that the artist is a unique person who made certain choices for specific reasons. AI shills don't understand that because they lack the curiosity/passion to do so in the first place, and thus do not care (or even comprehend) that a machine is doing the most essential and rewarding part of "art" in their stead.

This is why real artists sneer at AI shills. It isn't because they don't draw. It's because they don't care.

As well as repurposing Purple SG/Evangelion Prime as Sentinel Prime, who was mortally wounded during the war to liberate Cybertron from the Quintessons and who Proteus kept alive on life support until he managed to break free long enough to give the Matrix (which Proteus promise the Quintessons).

For his "court", I will give him Optimus Primal, Cheetor, Goldbug (SG version), Sound cast (my name for SG Soundwave), Sky Garry, and Big Convoy.

God I wish wild king had been the US toyline instead of cyberworld, the extra budget could have been so much for the variety here.

Rexblade is fucking weird as hell. He's got darn near full articulation, though posing can be a little jank with how compressed he is, he's definitely very cluttered. The arms coming out of the wheels is cool and all, but the result is that his arms are teeny tiny stubby little guys. He has tons of shoulder range thanks to a dedicated upward and forward and back hinges, though thanks to the way his arm connects he gets little actual outward movement, just anything you can imagine so long has his arm isn't lifted more than 60 degrees.

Legs are much of the same, in theory he has pretty good articulation, it's just that a lot of... stuff... gets in the way constantly, meaning while all he's missing is thigh rotation the hip spread is very limited and the knees can be kinda clunky.

His wild docking is also very interesting. He has several extra ports for more than five energy beasts, and his sword can hold many more energy chips than the other energy masters. His feet also have ankle tilts this time, so he stands way more firmly than Optimus and Megatron can. An odd result of the way he enters torso mode is that he technically somehow manages to have less movement than the previously mentioned pair. Correctly positioned he looses elbow and knee movement. While the elbow movement is easily solved by just taking advantage of how the energy beasts are built the knee joint is another story. You can futz the knee back by mistransforming the leg, and you can get more range by further changing how the energy beast forming his shin is oriented to use the hips of the energy beast as a sort of mid shin compound knee bend or even a high up ankle pivot. Conveniently you can also use the energy beasts waist joint as an ankle swivel too, meaning while on paper he is a bit of a brick it isn't too difficult to get lots of range out of him.

Rexblade is also much bigger than I thought he would be. He dwarfs Optimus and Megatron mass wise. They felt like fairly cheap modern transformers, he feels like... selects Halfshell? Maybe saying he feels like a better quality potp terrorcon would be easier to understand. It's definitely a nicer feeling than what's on store shelves right now.

I'd describe optimus as a tfp voyager with the plastic of the weird oversized commander beast hunters voyager and Rexblade is roughly a cybertron ultra. Wild docked optimus bulks up to feeling more like dotm leader sentinel, and rexblade like savage claw mode cybertron optimus.

As for pricing... the energy beasts are roughly 15-20 bucks, though Abyssrain specifically is like 150+ sometimes for some reason. As time goes on I expect most of them to be extremely expensive.

Optimus and Megatron have two packs with either Lightlong or Captian Volka. I recomend getting them that way, although single lightning and captian volkas are super cheap. The single packs are around 25 and the duo pack is commonly under 40. Shadow Megatron and Nemesis Prime only come as a pair with their own unique energy beast and they go for under 40 to 50.

World Dragnus is the big crazy big ticket item for the first wild king season, he comes with two unique energy beasts that lack the element chips. His set goes for the higher end of 50 dollars.

Rexblade is the new big popular release. Like optimus and Megatron he a two versions, one with or without an energy beast, you can find either version for as low as 30 to as high as 60.

Consider that as time goes on the energy beasts are going to get pretty rare. Some are already trying to creep up. Also that shipping and tariff fees need to be factored into any purchase, so while on the outset they are pretty cheap, completing an energy masters set of beasts can get kinda expensive compared to easier to get figures.
    >>
    >>11931428
I'm going to have to vehemently disagree. The energy masters are individually very basic Transformers, with Rexblade evoking some design language from the transformers go designs with a hint of combiner wars optimus maximus.

The energy masters have some vague simplified stuff going on because they are basically triple changers with one mode needing to be abstract enough to not look like an arm when plugged into a leg. The vast majority of the energy masters also feature the heads of various recognizable transformers. Thunderbeak for instance has starscreams head.

What throws people off is the kibble management of how the animal parts tend to jut off uselessly and how the lack of uniform colors makes it very difficult to pull in a coherent view of the combine modes as a whole.

It was not a thing, Shockwave has never been a shoulder cannon before, it's toy original.

There was a breif scene in the g1 cartoon where a rampaging Bruticus snatches up Shockwave, forcefully transforms him and starts brandishing him in gun mode. That's what it's a reference to.

The versatility of CW was great but at the end of the day they were really kind of shitty. The plastic felt cheap to touch and they can not get a good pose. Right now I only still have Defensor and I can't get him in any where near as many cool poses as I can the new Bruticus. I wish they could have found a way to do scramble-city style transformers with the frames but even without it the frame adds so much stability to the toy. The newer combiners without frames like Devastator and Liokaiser are great too because they just feel so secure. A lot of things tab together across multiple pieces to make Devastator feel right. Though I'm not a fan of how Scrapper forms the foot I can't deny it still feels secure.

So if humans have names based on where they come from, would the Dinobots following those naming conventions be called Hilarybergs since they came into existence in a place called Mt. St. Hilary?
    >>
The ideas they went with in Beast Machines seem such bizarre a misstep compared to the company trends and fandom zeitgeist at the time. It was clear by the end of Beast Wars they were gearing up to go back to vehicles, and the constant allusions to G1 felt like the waters were being tested to see if there was still an audience. Then they go and make a whole show about how technology bad, vehicles bad. Transtech, conceptually would have been the better intermediary before a total reboot. What would you call a cheetah themed racecar, or a gorilla themed truck? A Beast Machine. Even the name fits better.
    >>
    >>11932589
I always got the distinct impression that the writers knew the series wasnt going to land so they threw all caution to the wind and wrote what they wanted as opposed to what the franchise needed in the moment. If you go back with a magnifying glass you see plenty of missteps like that over the years, but it's just the result of how the sausage is made.

i like how they actually acknowledged that Primal was going too far with that, I found that very unexpected, especially in the 90s

    >>
    >>11932589
The message wasn’t technology bad or vehicles bad, granted it was handled a bit clunky but Primal going all in on organic purism was meant to be a bad thing too and blinding him. They really should’ve shown them use more tech, rattrap’s gadgets blending tech and organics were the closest thing.
Also conceptually it’s really clear the vehicons were meant to be Beast Machines, with animal featured in vehicle mode
    >>
Anecdotal take but I think Megazarak should've been an exclusive because no one is buying him. I still see him in stores along with the Unicron Herald, and online being discounted. He should've been another Armada reissue.
    >>
    >>11932681
I watched the show, I had all the optimus primal figures. I had vehicon mirage and deluxe Jetstorm as a kid. I even bought Air attack optimus primal when it came out to round out the collection. There's never a point in the show where technology is being used for good, only sabotaged to impede the villains. Rattrap trying to arm himself is presented as a bad thing. Optimus Trying to interface with hologram fucks him over and gets him nearly shut out of the oracle. Taking control of the Grand Mal with all its defenses is never shown to give them an upper hand, and instead they have to fight tooth and nail to keep it secure. Ironically, as they tried to do this, they ended up making oragnic life look even worse by comparison. Eating oragnic food makes them turn into simple brained animals. All their organic modes are good for is hiding and running, and are constantly at a disadvantage physically. Just reformatting one robot takes Optimus off the field for weeks. At no point does the show every intentionally convey oragnic life as a good thing, only as a pathetic helpless thing that needs to be constantly coddled to get it to function. This show didn't know what it wanted to be and it's a tragedy it sours the perception of the Beast Era almost as bad as the Star Wars Sequels did to the OT.
    >>
    >>11932696
Yeah I always wonder if they release some of these guys knowing they're not going to sell well.
    >>
    >>11932698
    >All their organic modes are good for is hiding and running
They also regenerate any damage they took so long as they're in Beast Mode (which is essential to their survival, given they no longer have access to a CR Chamber).
Anyway, the takeaway here was supposed to be that "All Machine Bad, All Organic Bad, Some Machine + Some Organic In Harmony Good". Taking the pluses from both sides to make a previously unsustainable situation work - in this case, being partially organic allows them to have a variety of fuel sources (so long as that doesn't become their EXCLUSIVE fuel source) and a means of repairing themselves without needing more external materials, thus solving the resource crisis on Cybertron while remembering to keep their identity and culture as mechanical lifeforms.

Cybertron was running low on Energon. Earth, however, was unusually rich in the stuff, and there were a number of different ways it could be extracted from the planet. Nobody was making Energon from nothing - it was in Earth's soil, its oil, its plants, etc, and the same methods for gathering it on Earth wouldn't work on Cybertron, where the actual shortage was happening.
We find out in Beast Wars that the reason there was such an unusually high amount of the stuff on Earth was because the Vok seeded it here for...whatever the hell they were doing before the BW crew showed up and messed up their plans. When the Planet Buster was destroyed, it refined it all into an inert state where it was harmless, but also integrated the Energon into everything, thus putting the planet in the state it's in for the G1 cartoon.
    >>
    >>11933047
    ohhhh
thank you, anon, I was the tard this time.
    >>
    >>11933049
To be fair, the G1 cartoon didn't explicitly spell things out - all we knew was that the Decepticons wanted a magic substance called Energon, and that they were trying to harvest the stuff from Earth using very destructive methods. It wasn't until Beast Wars that the situation was outright stated - Cybertron was running out of Energon and other valuable materials needed to keep the Cybertronians alive, and things had gotten so bad that everyone had downgraded to smaller, more energy-efficient bodies to try to conserve what little they had left (hence why the BW crew are so much smaller than the G1 cast). Megatron had somehow gotten his hands on a map that would lead him to the motherlode of the stuff (The Golden Disk from Earth's Voyager probe, though he also had another agenda thanks to the hidden message from G1 Megatron that only he, Tarantulas and Dinobot knew about), and Primal's mission was to make sure Megs didn't get his hands on enough of the stuff to fuel a Predacon uprising. No one expected there to be anywhere near as much Energon as there actualyl was at the coordinates Megatron had jumped to, nor did they realize it was actually primitive Earth until after the Planet Buster incident; while the Maximal High Council apparently knew about the Energon map on the Golden Disk (but not G1 Megatron's message from just before his attack on Autobot City), they never pursued it despite needing it because the area and time period the coordinates led to had been deemed off-limits due to Earth's pivotal role in the Autobot/Decepticon war.
    >>
    >>11933057

This one probably won't even have the brainmaster, and its transformation is weird, seems star saber's jet has a fake nose cone instead of using saber's?

The OG is just so fucking good
Yea I do like like the Legacy but the OG can pop the foot off for Pegleg AND the foot can double as a mecha Parrot

I made a very smart and totally sane and planned purchase today at a local Comic Shop

I've still got mine sitting in the HLJ PW, should probably have him shipped next month

    ...or is that this month??
    >>
    >>11933120
He's been out like 2 months?
I found him at a Comic Shop for basically $20 or so over what it'd be on BBTS.

I wanted him but then I saw the DCS Dinobots which uses the similar metallic and G1 toy look so I dunno if I should get the Missing Link with that one coming out now

The SS86 is a damn good mold so it really depends if you want nice big boy or great smaller one
I would say SS86 is more poseable on like all levels and feels easier to mess with if that's what you like

That was 2024 and was for almost everybody. Worse for EU/UK and AUS at the time apparently
They cleared it up but not until an absurd amount clapped the fuck out of them on socials and were pushing to refund entire warehouses

And today in addition to Missing Link Grimlock I got another boy
    He was on sale
I did not listen to friends
He is funny but honestly absurdly disappointing

I personally wish that Sentinel was closer to the orange of the G1 truck he’s pulling from, but I still think it’s a good deco on its own
