I saw this video, and wanted to ask the question, Is Power Rangers dead yet?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qR_RTgw7Cg
    >>
According to Playmates its basically keeping their lights on. So I'd say no.

Also thats the old Dragonzord model.
    >>
    Toy wise? No, media? Yes.
Toys will die too if they don’t step out of the comfort zone and do zords and rangers that haven’t had a modern update.
    >>
    >>11912475
Toys of the Zeo Rangers are next year, then Dino Thunder and Wild Force some time later. No word on Zords yet.
    >>
Speaking of, Playmates posted the new toy model today. No more snout hole. Also the hands don't shoot anymore and slide into the chest like they should.

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/playmatestoys/mighty-morphin-power-rangers-combinable-dragonzord/posts/4815804
    >>
I just realized, we didn't get a miniature White Ranger with the Firebird.
    >>
    >>11912470
    >According to Playmates its basically keeping their lights on.
    That's called a lie, sweetie
    >>
    >>11912572
Not according to their last financial report.

And no, you're not allowed to lie on those things. You get in trouble for that.
    >>
    >>11912465
Power Rangers died so hard it took Sentai with it.
    >>
    >>11912482
I kinda like this change, technically less showaccurate now but I never really liked the arms folding in.
The missile idea was bizarre but on par for how Playmates does this considering they made the tops of the Triceratops/Sabertooth tiger weapons into missiles.
    >>
    >>11912482
    >Also the hands don't shoot anymore and slide into the chest like they should.
They're not supposed to work like that though.

    >>11912584
    >I never really liked the arms folding in.
Why? There's nothing negative about them working that way. Why would you rather have a Dragonzord with no arms than the actual correct mechanism?

All in all this toy is way less shit than before but it's still pretty terrible when compared to pretty much any previously released Dragonzord.

    >>
so what did you think about the video
    >>
    >>11913002
I think niche fans of the franchise need to realize MMPR is Power Rangers for 90% of people and all attempts to move away from it fail miserably and that's the reason why companies are so quick to crawl back to it. Playmates MMPR stuff is selling okay, but I promise you the upcoming figures of newer seasons will not go far. The franchise needs a full on proper MMPR reboot if it wants to survive it is the only thing the majority of actual people care about.
    >>
Power Rangers only ever got popular in the first place because Jurassic Park was WHITE hot in mid 1993 and every kid in America wanted more dinos.
    >>
    >>11912482
    >>11912584
What was wrong with the arms folding in?

    >>11913002
Who cares about the video? It's another doomsaying clickbait that doesn't actually say anything that isn't readily obvious or meaningful.
    >>
    >>11913176
I've always disagreed with this. Power Rangers still would have been popular had they used Jetman or even if they waited and used Dairanger. It was popular because there was nothing like it on TV at the time. It was a live action superhero show for kids with really intense action sequences. The show decreased in popularity as it was forced to sanitize itself.

    >What was wrong with the arms folding in?
I just never liked how crunchy it felt on the original and it lead to the hollow hands. The Legacy one also felt like a tight fit as well. I did like how smooth it was on the chogokin at least, the first time I liked that bit of engineering.
In general I just like telescoping/sliding transforming mechanisms though.
    >>
    >>11913116
Disney era fans especially need to grasp that Disney fucked up the marketing so hard that those seasons after Ninja Storm have some of the worst viewership in the franchise. There's simply less people to have watched it and be nostalgic for those seasons to make them worth selling.
MMPR will always be top dog, but if any other seasons have a chance at selling decently it'll be maybe Zeo, In Space, and Time Force. And even those are a stretch. No one is going to buy Jungle Fury or Operation Overdrive figures the same way they do MMPR.
    >>
    >>11913427
Hopefully the franchise dies for good after this
    >>
    >>11913428
The franchise is more relevant and has a wider audience than He-man, which should be dead but Mattel won't let it die. Almost no kids have cared about He-man in 50 years but at least Power rangers was last successful like 12 years ago for dino Charge.
    >>
    >>11913431
Why can't the fans make a good fan show?
    >>
    >>11913431
As a teacher I can say kids still very much love Power Rangers, and they recognize the original team pretty easily, but clearly the franchise has no idea how to actually tap into that. Meanwhile even after a movie He-Man books I got for my classroom were pretty much unrecognized. No one in power has any idea how to actually market the franchise because they don't understand the appeal of the franchise. The cheesy tokusatsu elements are what make it fresh and unique for kids who are used to American sensibilities but they keep trying to wash them away.
    >>
    >>11913464
obviously children are retarded because their parents are retarded and watch tiktok all day
    >>
    >>11913427
Except when Hasbro tried to go all-in on In Space with the Lightning Collection those figures shelf warmed. It isn't as popular outside of fan circles as people think it is. Power Rangers is also really hindered by its team-based set up. People will buy a random Transformer because there are two factions. Any given evil robot or good robot can co-exist among everyone else short of a few teamguys. People are less willing to do this with Power Rangers becuase they have to consider "Well if I buy SPD Green I'll have to buy the other 6(+) SPD Rangers to finish the team."
    >>
    >>11913431
It’s funny, after the movie sales of He-man toys tripled. Makes me wonder if it was just collectors.
    >>
    >>11913468
i just think the individual aren't well-defined enough for people to care. Like why would someone buy In Space Blue Ranger if he sees him on a shelf? A rando isn't going to know his deal. Transformers, Ninja Turtles, they're more defined characters.
    >>
    >>11913496
    >they're more defined characters
they have a dozen reboots and different styles theres nothing definite about them as the corpos keep rebooting them
    >>
    >>11913505
But those versions are well defined individuals. Animated Prime and G1 86 Prime can co-exist on shelves as self-defined characters. Other reboots are just retreading the same beats for new audiences too like with the Turtles.

Most Power Rangers/Sentai heroes are not as fleshed out. They relay on a archetypes to establish their characters throughout multiple iterations which makes each feel weaker. Like the tough black guy, the goofy green guy, the tomboy yellow, cool/smart blue, stoic red with a few stock swap-ins. This works great on screen but it makes it harder to connect with characters as individuals.
    >>
    >>11913537
    > great on screen but it makes it harder to connect with characters as individuals.
power rangers is a commercial to sell toys first and foremost
    >>
    >>11913551
Yeah in the moment and to kids. We're talking about long-term collector lines. The characters aren't individualized enough to drive those sales.
    >>
    >>11913658
and kamen rider does is which is why it lasted for so long, it can change the formula and be anything. thats the problem, you need one character to continually be retold when Japan has no issue creating new bullshit out the wazoo thats just a spin off or a bootleg of an original idea and people eat it up regardless. yet for some delusional reason people think power rangers can be a legacy icon when its just a 90s fad that fans cant let go of, which is why that white dragon movie was shit and completely mis understands why power rangers sold so well in the first place. at least the 2016 movie had a robot fight as shit as that was. a movie about a white draogn cant have a dragon fight in it?

    >>
    >>11916847
The original toy's tail was short but you still needed to bend the drill part up so it didn't touch the ground, that's already better looking than this thing.

    >Or just buy the SoC releases which are the best versions of the Zyu/MMPR zords so far.
Not that anon, but I was very tempted to a couple years ago, until I saw that the Megazord was like $500 and the Dragonzord was $700, or something along those lines. I think I felt my wallet shit itself, and I say that as someone who often drops stupidly huge amounts on PR and Godzilla related merch fairly often.
    >>
    >>11916898
NTA, should have preordered the reissue month ago, it comes out this month. Maybe some retailers might have some left online in Japan.
    >>
    >>11913464
Cool is just cheesiness when the audience is receptive. He-Man is also cheesy as fuck but when you remember that he's Superman with the reputation of Christ and he's basically babysitting his enemies he turns cooler; this is all beneath him and he still chooses to be a good guy.
There's also the 20XX version that just surrenders to how over the top MOTU can be and takes it seriously at the same time, but it seems that the people in charge don't want to entertain the strong points of the series.
Same with Power Rangers. Wearing colorful costumes instead of having one standard costume with a badge to indicate each ranger's role is stupid, and so is summoning a giant robot when they could just have a jet launch a missile into the giant monster's heart, but it gives them character. Character is what you sell in entertainment, not how sound of an speculation your franchise is.
    >>
    >>11915610
Characters in Marvel Legends can usually stand on their own.
In Space Blue was a Rocky clone, and a lot better than Rocky because the poor guy just sucked and TJ was great in his role as a sort of advisor to Andros, but he's not popular enough to stand on his own. If anything, I might be exaggerating his appeal because I'm a fan. Most people don't remember In Space as fondly as fans that stayed with the series do.
    >>
    >>11913496
It's also exposure. Most people remember MMPR and maybe up to Alien Rangers, maybe maybe Zeo. Turbo is a stretch, forget about the rest. Maybe a younger generation remembers Time Force and Wild Force fondly but those are fans, not your average kid.
If I was Hasbro, I'd lean more into the weapons because those are the easiest way to inform someone about what a ranger does.
    >>
    >>11916898
    too big
dragon beast king would be cool if it weren't too small (same size as smp's I think which rules those out too) and had better articulation
    super7's too big
If i want stuff that'll scale with Godzilla lines like Hiya/Figuarts there really aren't any options. The VHS line could have worked if it weren't shit and they released everything.
    >>
    >>11917011
    >Turbo is a stretch, forget about the rest.
I think Turbo is probably fairly well remembered (not liked, remembered), one because it debuted with a theatrically released feature film, and two because it's fairly infamous for "Cars? WTF? How the fuck is that an upgrade from ninjas and dinosaurs? Ew."
    >>
    >>11912482
Why is anyone interested in this thing? It looks like shit and there's plenty of better options. No hate, I'm genuinely curious.
    >>
    >>11912580
How'd it manage to die anyway? Isn't Kamen Rider still going on? Something about bringing back Space Sheriff Gavan as well. I'd have thought if one was doing well they'd both be doing well.
    >>
    >>11915792
That is surprising. I wasn't sure anything could move the needle for them. I had hoped the CG show from a few years back would have made a splash but by its cancellation I assume it must not have.

Sentai had been on a decline for over a decade since Ninninger (Ninja Steel) and a combination of factors, including Hasbro's takeover of PR, really exposed how bad things were domestically for Sentai. Project R.E.D. is on its second show, Kakusei Hunter Omegahorn.
    >>
    >>11919537
    >Toy sales cratered
Yeah, that would do it. Toys and merchandise is the lifeblood for a franchise like this.

    >>11919643
    >Sentai had been on a decline for over a decade since Ninninger
I hadn't thought it was that bad for that long. I had heard it went bad, effectively died in the west, but I thought it was still doing ok Japan side. That Project R.E.D. was going on I thought meant if was doing ok. Figured the two could be related
    >>
    >>11919282
I think it was mostly because Playmates did the Dino Megazord, the Thunder Megazord, and the Tigerzord, and will likely do the Ninja and/or Shogun Megazord, so I think people were mainly all "Why the fuck would you skip the Dragonzord, the most popular Zord in all of MMPR?" and it snowballed from there.
    >>
So I'm guessing we won't hear anything from Playmates at NYCC?
    >>

power rangers is dead no one cares
    >>
    >>11912465
Sadly no. This zombie franchise is still gonna keep going for as long as they can milk 40 year old men with new versions of the same old megazords, only way for it to die is if Bandai and Toei somehow buys the rights and just use the Power Rangers name as a localized name for Super Sentai (which it always was anyways)
    >>
    >>11919282
because they made the MMPR zords and they're really big, so people want the Dragon Zord to go with them, only reason it's a kickstarter is because retailers do not want the Dragonzord

    >>
    >>11922025
So you're telling me Bionicle isn't a dead franchise because we've had a general here since forever?

Power Rangers is now in a state were whoever has the license capitalizes on the nostalgia for the first seasons and after that there's no more money to be made, so another toy company gets the rights and does the exact same thing, rinse and repeat. Soon nobody else will even try. And with Sentai dead there's no future for the brand at all. Power Rangers is going to end up like Bionicle.

MMPR is milked out, atleast S1-2
If another company gets the chance they will have to make highly articulated DX versions of the zords that don’t break the bank. That will be the last remaining drop
S3- in space is still ripe though
    >>
    >>11924063
    We're getting S3 next year.
    >>
    >>11922110
I'm not saying the franchise isn't in dire straits, but the only real difference between this and the last several times the franchise was in bad shape is the length of time it's taking to bounce back. Despite the series being over for the foreseeable future and attempts and revival stalling, we've still got toys and more side media coming out than during past slumps.

And it's rather silly to say nobody cares about a franchise when people are still willing to talk about it. We're no benchmark for the larger community, but at least here there's interest.

No shit it is. The factor that Toei actually axed Super Sentai given Hasbro fucking up international toy sells confirms there's legitimately no way to save it.
Companies like Hasbro and Playmates are just moving it's corpse around Weekend at Bernie's-style.
    >>
    >>11913116
    >MMPR is Power Rangers for 90% of people and all attempts to move away from it fail miserably.
Except for the time it didn’t fail. Power rangers was successful all the way to I would say samurai, samurai leaning more towards a downwards spiral. Yes it’s true that the series did have its downs like overdrive and mystic force, it however always came back with the next iteration. Disney cracked the code when they focused on a smaller cast of 3-4 rangers and having overarching plots that played in the background. Most importantly they didn’t treat the audience like retards that couldn’t count to three and as for acting it was surprisingly natural and “familiar”

Disney fucked up when their newer shows started acting like those animated cartoons you see on the treeblock for literal 3 year olds. No respect for the audience, followed by the woke lgbt slop they decided to pull in the last seasons that was the final nail in the coffin.
    >>
    >>11924422
Never give Disney credit. Disney never wanted PR, only reluctantly paid for it for years, and around the time of Mystic Force started trying to kill it.
    >>
    >>11913718
It’s completely ethical to hatewatch the show
    >>
    >>11924422
None of that shit you says actually has anything to do with PR's toy sales. Disney didn't make those decisions, Toei's choices to move around team member totals and pivoting to swappable megazord limbs did. Megaforce and Dino Charge made tons of money for the franchise too, even Ninja Steel/2017 movie made decent money even though it was clear Bandai America was stretched thin for those lines and everything suffered as a result.

Toys R Us shuttering, Nickelodeon's decreasing viewership and Hasbro's apathy are the real causes of death. TRU was willing to carry crazy expensive exclusives to get foot traffic, with them gone the only retailer to step up for those items were Amazon and Gamestop and they couldn't carry as many items or as much stock as TRU did. Nick stopped bothering to promote the series beyond the premiere window because they gained nothing from promoting a show they didn't even make royalties from. You can even trace this change as far back as when they began to air TMNT 2012, they gave it a better time slot than Power Rangers and plugged it everywhere. Hasbro inherited a whole bunch of infrastructure and contracts from Saban and chose to let them run the clock and make token efforts to a reboot while having nothing to ever show for it. Now Sentai is dead so they can't even go back to that well as a back up too.
    >>
