I am looking at setting up a torrenting PC out of an old laptop. Not to torrent a massive amount, just to upload more then I download.

If my bulk storage is connected via USB, am I setting myself up for pain? Is USB 2 usable, or I need USB 3?
    >>
    >>1396315
It depends on your connection speed, some USB boxes also go to sleep
If you only use the laptop for that, put it internally and do a minimal Linux/Windows installation
    >>
    >>1396408

I was looking at a basic linux install with the ethermet port configured for 10 Mb as I only have 30Mb upload.

My hope with the external stotage is to use hardware I already have. I will keep the point about external boxes sleeping in mind if I end up with weird behaviour.
    >>
HP Z600 dual Xeon thing running Ubuntu with two external SAS RAID 10 arrays. Two arrays each of 4 x 4TB HDD's. I've also got a less power hungry Z400 single Xeon with a quad external HBA card so I'm going to move the arrays onto that to free up the Z600. The second Z600 is a Windows 11 box that never gets switched on.

Z400 already has seven internal drives and there's two more SAS drives waiting to join the arrays so it will be mounting a total of 17 HDD's. Eventually.
    >>
    >>1398603
Correction, one of tthose arrays is SATA and is pretty much just a backup of the SAS array

All manufacturers (except Toshiba) are upping their production capacity. Shareholders are not dumb, when prices are higher they will want to sell more units. Seagate and Western Digital have even announced their largest capacity will be 100TB drives soon. Prices will come down, don't worry.
    >>
    >>1400509
Increase their capacity sure but for what market. For the AI market, have you seen the videos with bins full of hdds being shredded

You seem to be an expert in terms of memory storage drives!

Should I buy a Fikwot FX815 4TB SSD or should I buy an 8 TB Seagate One Touch External HDD in Amazon?

This picture is relevant to what I said!
    >>
    >>1400904
My recommendation would be to buy 3.5'' HDDs and configure them in a RAID setup, preferably with a nice filesystem like ZFS.
This makes the whole debate about expected lifetime of individual drives irrelevant.

PICrel is stolen from reddit but what would you install on such a bad boy?
    unraid? FreeNAS? TruNAS?
I was thinking Debian + ZFS + Docker containers.
Or is there something special to all these specific NAS operating systems?
    >>
    >>1401038
    OP here.
It depends on your own needs; I installed Debian because I think it's more flexible.
I mostly use containers, except for Transmission and CUPS, which are installed natively
CUPS doesn't work very well in Docker, even for discovery
    >>
    Too lazy for pic

    - Used Supermicro mobo with Epyc 7302, 256GB RAM
    - Proxmox for hypervisor
    - TrueNAS VM with HBA passed through to it, ~170TB raw storage, ~74TB available due to RAID & hot-spares
    - rtorrent/rutorrent running in a k8s pod funneling all traffic through VPN with gluetun

I use FreeBSD for its native ZFS support and better throughput. It's also light weight enough to fit on a 16GB sata DOM and still have enough room for jellyfin and qbittorrent-nox.
    >>

Couldn't find any used ones, and most define 7 are the compact edition.
I did find one that was the XL but it costs like $330.

I pay for a year of mullvad with bitcoin/lightning. I always pay for a year at a time. Nobody knows it’s seeding 24/7 lmao. Nobody knows it was me.

Around 4TB or movies and tv shows. Not a single torrent with more than 10 seeders

truenas is a pain in the ass. I would have said 100% lock unraid before they jew'd out. unless you have some specific high end CPU requirement I'd just buy an 8 bay synology for a simple NAS because it just works.

hdd 1: 14tb exos (roms, emus, mags, multimedia, retro cartoons, audiobooks etc etc w/ launchbox)
hdd 2: 1tb wd black (misc)
    hdd 3: 2tb seagate barracuda

smthing like 20-24TB would be much better tho
    >>
    >>1400904
If you can help it, dont buy seagate. They fail way more often and in ways that make dr harder. F3 comes locked by default, and to flash custom to bypass it yo either need pc3k to exploit, or you have to pull the spi chip and flash that and put it back on as the firmware is digitally signed and verified during download by the hdd. Just check the backblaze data by manufacturers, you will see seagate consistently skewing the data by 2-3x times failure rates compared to anything else.

If you dont buy seagate drives it makes such a large difference you can almost get away with not having redundancy.
    >>
    >>1401038
Forget what you run on it. This is unrelated to torrenting as it is not demanding for permormant storage, but that in the picture looks like a pissy sata expander card. Never use those. They can be cheap, but so are pcie2 x8 HBA's (or IT raid cards) decommissioned for 20 years. And they willwipe the floor with the sata expanders at 32Gb/s throughput both ways. If you are short of pcie lanes and dont want to waste 8 lanes at gen2 speeds, go for gen3 x8 cards, still cheap as hell, but you dont really need it as the gen2 card will still fully saturate those 8 drives and more.
