They re-redid the effects with the blu-ray releases and those look better than the first run of CG effects. Pretend to be a purist and throw around sovl if you want, but TOS was notable for being an extremely low budget, bad looking show. The most recent rendition is an improvement.

different anon, but no, they it's not. blu-ray does manage to improve on effects like phaser firing, planet killer are overall better, I'm not disagreeing there. And the blu-rays have less grain, that is also true. But in some effects, like planet killer blu-ray's boosted contrast also looses some of the textures. That perhaps can be counted as a matter of preference. But the boosted contrast also fucks up some of the colors in faces and shirts. This doesn't happen all the time, but often enough. Blu-ray also manages to loose some of the sharpness, somehow. And it looses detail for example in shots of the Enterprise.
