What soccer/football league outside of the big ones do you pay even a little attention to?

Mine are Norway's Eliteserien and Estonia's Meistriliiga in Europe, and the USL here in the USA

He doesn't need condolences, these leagues are comfy. Only a few clubs have a steady claim to the Bundesliga, and not all of them are always there
Sure, 2nd tier is better than 3rd tier all in all. But it is nice, really

I occasionally check the other Germanic leagues' standings and go over some games and players, but I don't watch. These are the leagues that are closest to us in many ways. This is total stadium attendance, isn't it? I'm kind of surprised to see the Eredivisie that high - not because it's a bad league, but because I think fairly many stadiums in the Eredivisie are rather small. I didn't expect it to be double Belgium's and comparatively close to Italy, although some clubs in the Serie A also have pretty small stadiums. This grap is from 2016, but things cannot have changed that much
Some of this stuff is also down to the league format, of course. For example, the Premier League has 20 teams. So 380 games. The Bundesliga has 18 teams, so 306 games. That means the Bundesliga has a higher average attendance. Funnily enough, this means Eredivisie does even better when compared with Serie A, it's also 18 vs 20 teams
>>
>>158387714
Braunschweig? You are being rather modest, this is your 5th consecutive year in the 2nd Bundes after all. Although you're always battling relegation
Still, you're there and hard to get rid of, so to say
My local lads would eagerly take that spot. They are a regular 3rd tier side again, but catching up further isn't easy despite some untapped potential

The list seems rather old. Current figures for football leagues are
(Total attendance)
>Premier League - 15.5 million
>Bundesliga - 12.7 million (you can see some rather big clubs got relegated)
>EFL Championship - 12.4 million
>Primera Division - 11.8 million
>Serie A - 11.3 million
>MLS - 11.2 million
>Campeonato Brasileiro - 10 million
>2nd Bundesliga - 8.5 million
>Ligue 1 - 8.1 million
>J League - 7.8 million
>Liga MX - 7.2 million
>Eredivisie - 6 million
>Chinese Super League - 5.9 million

Due to different formats, here's also the average attendance
>Bundesliga - 42,450
>Premier League - 41,600
>Primera Division - 30,950
>Serie A - 29,975
>2nd Bundesliga - 28,500
>Ligue 1 - 27,400
>Campeonato Brasileiro - 26,225
>Chinese Super League - 25,600
>EFL Championship - 22,290

I saw a table the other day that basically every stadium here is 99+% occupancy. There isn't a club that isn't looking to expand their stadium or is without a waiting list for season tickets.

Basically the opposite of what Italy has with empty dilapidated stadiums
>>
>>158387746
I don't know, I just kind of grabbed the image off of Google to use. Only lower-side German team I know of and track was Dynamo Dresden because I was there for a spell

If I had money, I'd found my own club stateside in the USL League One, especially given Promotion/Relegation coming here in a few years

I only recently got into club football tbf, I never had a boyhood club so all the clubs I like or, more accurately, keep track of I picked
>>
>>158388226
Damn, yeah, Italy is worse than I thought
Data for 2025/26
>https://www.fussballdaten.de/italien/2026/zuschauer/
Their stadium infrastructure is rather bad in general. They'd really profit from having actual football stadiums without running tracks, for starters, I think. But still, these are sad numbers considering Italy is a great football nation
>https://www.fussballdaten.de/niederlande/2026/zuschauer/
Dutch numbers look much better indeed. Ajax being near the bottom in attendance rate is kind of crazy, despite their bad season
>https://www.fussballdaten.de/bundesliga/2026/zuschauer/
Our numbers still look a bit better, although everyone knows Hoffenheim, Wolfsburg and Leipzig cheat. No club is at 100% because of security zones at derbies. Everyone with 99.5% or more sold every single ticket they could sell
Out of interest, which Dutch clubs are close to an expansion? Stadium projects are so fucking expensive nowadays, most clubs here would kill to increase their capacities, but they cannot afford it. Hamburg for example could sell >70,000 tickets for every game without a doubt, but they cannot expand beyond 60,000 plus maybe a few hundred, which they are currently trying to squeeze out
>>
>>158388255
Dresden fans are good indeed, it's one of these clubs that could have a bigger stadium. The club has potential for more, it is kind of infuriating that they are fighting to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga at best

>>158388409
>Forgot to add that the USL idea seems soulful and that I imagine getting into club football is hard if you're not really socialized to support a club from childhood onwards. Must be tough
It takes money to make a club, and pay for staff, management, facility upkeep, et cetera. Especially because I'd like it to be accessible for people to come to games and such. Closest USL team would result in a real good derby (working-class/blue-collar folk vs. the richest county per capita in the USA right next door)

For soccer, I follow my alma mater's men's soccer team back home (NCAA Division 1) especially because we placed in the top four in the nation a few years ago in the race for the national championship. I like American football ofc but soccer's great too.

>Italian stadium infrastructure is rather bad in general
Basically what happened was that they were given renovations for the 1990 World Cup, but after that nothing was done anymore. Only a small handful of clubs own their own stadium and the rest is just left to rot. Some of the sections on Napoli's stadium are permanently closed because it's simply unsafe.

>Out of interest, which Dutch clubs are close to an expansion?
Of the big clubs, PSV is closest. They want to build a whole new ring on top of what they have now.

Ajax is ok for now, since their stadium is relatively new. But it knowingly left space for an extra ring on top if that was needed.

Feyenoord is a entirely different kettle of fish. There was a project called "Feyenoord City" which would have been a 63,000 seat stadium in the place where it is right now. Built together with the city of Rotterdam to revitalise the whole neighbourhood. But the finances behind it just grew and grew and it wasn't feasible anymore. But the development of plans wasn't free either so they had to take out a loan to pay for that. (Feyenoord is the brokest club of the big 3). For along time the stadium was also a separate company from Feyenoord itself, but that has been solved last summer.

Not to mention Feyenoord fans being nostalgiapilled to no end so a hardcore contingent ended up sending death threats to basically anyone that had anything to do with the stadium plans. De Kuip is an astonishing place in terms of atmosphere but it's been under-maintained for years and compared to Ajax and PSV it just doesn't make all that much money because the facilities are so shit.

Oh and some of the smaller teams here are building too. Cambuur just opened their new stadium and Go Ahead Eagles is about to start expanding theirs by a couple of thousand.
>>
>>158388344
Just for the fun of it, I checked the second Bundesliga.
That's the current year.
>No club is at 100% because of security zones at derbies. Everyone with 99.5% or more sold every single ticket they could sell
Well, if there was talk about Braunschweig and the derby, it was sold out at 22.175, average attendance is 500 higher.
If you consider that at least 10 % is for away fans and all of this about security zones between fan groups, you can assume that every team with at least 90 % is hard capped by their stadium size.
So, those are Kaiserslautern, 96, Dynamo Dresden, Pauli, Arminia Bielefeld, Bochum, Eintracht Braunschweig, Darmstadt, Osna and HDH.
It's half the league.
>>
>>158375479
I don’t pay attention to anything. The last league worth following was Serie A in the 1990s and 2000s.
>>
>>158388548
PSV wants to expand from 35,000 to 58,000? Holy fuck, that's a big jump. And they can reliably fill this? Price tag seems to be at 400-450 million, that's impossible for all 50+1-adhering clubs except Bayern and maybe Dortmund here.
I have heard about the De Kuip being a never-ending story with lots of chaos
Interesting that some of the smaller clubs are building. Sounds like you are more active than we are, although I guess Kiel, Münster and Essen are expanding by like 5,000 seats each in the near future. But the big clubs are basically locked, they cannot spend the necessary amounts. So PSV doing this definitely catches my attention
>>158388580
Heidenheim have definitely some meme mechanism, though. I recently randomly saw one of their home games and there were many empty seats. Not like their attendance is bad, especially considering how small Heidenheim is, but I am not quite sure about their data
Nürnberg is honestly lower than expected given their current run and their fanbase size. Hannover on the other hand is doing better than expected under current conditions
But yeah, it's a good attendance all in all. A few cool clubs in the 3rd tier could help improve things further
>>158388539
Sounds cool. Yeah, I forgot about your college sports scene. You have some choices, neat
Schade, dass du kein Dresden-Spiel sehen konntest ... gerade gegen einen anderen Ost-Verein wäre das sicher lustig, denke ich. Allerdings ist es natürlich schwierig, als Gast an Karten zu kommen
>>
>>158388814
>but I am not quite sure about their data
That's the odd thing. Darmstadt and Braunschweig only declared 1 match "sold out", and for Braunschweig it was apparently the match with the lowest attendance so far if they usually sell more tickets. Kiel is an odd case. Despite being dead last in that table and just 77 %, they claim that all but one match were actually sold out. I agree that both Nürnberg and 96 seem odd, and for the same reasons.
Data that I totally don't trust is Wolfsburg, actually. They faked their attendance in the first Bundesliga, so who says they don't also do this in the second? Especially since their fans seem to have kind of an inferiority complex towards Braunschweig...
>A few cool clubs in the 3rd tier could help improve things further
Apparently the team which fills their stadium the most in the 3rd is Preußen Münster. I agree that there are a lot of fun teams in the 3rd Division, but you can really see that it's all over the place. Massive teams and then village teams nobody cares about like Havelse.
Teams like Essen, Saarbrücken or Aachen would be fun to see in the 2nd Bundesliga again, not just Düsseldorf, Hansa or Duisburg, the ones everybody would point to I guess.
What's really surprising to me down there is actually how few people go and watch Mannheim matches. They seem much bigger than this.
>>
>>158389001
>dead last in that table and just 77 %, they claim that all but one match were actually sold out
Kiel currently expands their stadium, one of their stands is missing. Their numbers are correct, they cannot sell more tickets but the stadium cannot be sold out like before the season due to the construction
Aachen is funny, 15 years ago, everyone said they are THE upper third 2nd Bundes club and a total waste in the 3rd tier or below. But after 11 years in the 4th tier, a fair share of people have forgotten about them, I think. They need to catch back up again, but they can. It will take time, though
Saarbrücken is a club I pity a lot, especially because Elversberg are living the good life right now. I'd rather have Saarbrücken in their position
Mannheim is weird indeed, I reguarly find myself being disappointed at them. They don't even have the excuse of a local rival, VfR Mannheim has unfortunately slipped into irrelevancy. You cannot tell me all these people go watch Frankfurt or Lautern ... or Hoffenheim
>>
>>158388814
>PSV wants to expand from 35,000 to 58,000? Holy fuck, that's a big jump.
The final number is still a bit in doubt, but they applied for a permit to expand up to 25.000 extra seats. Media reports that the final thing will be in the low 50.000's. They won't have much trouble selling that out since Eindhoven and the region around it has been growing at a very high pace in recent years (ASML and stuff is near there). And they're in a very good place right now financially so they want to strike when the iron is hot I guess.

Football is in a very healthy place right now throughout the country, at least in terms of attendance so banks/funds are wanting to invest in stadium expansions since it's basically guaranteed money.

We don't have the 50+1 ownership rules here, but we are very strict about club finances and investments. Making sure the money flowing in isn't dodgy etc. And it's not that expansive to go from 10.000 to 15.000 seats in the case of Cambuur.
>>
>>158389068
>But after 11 years in the 4th tier, a fair share of people have forgotten about them, I think
I disagree. 23000 in the 3rd Division is massive, still.
>VfR Mannheim has unfortunately slipped into irrelevancy
They seem to be on their way back. Totally crazy to see them in the RL again at all and then... this.
>You cannot tell me all these people go watch Frankfurt or Lautern
Have you ever been on away day in FFM or Lautern? Sure, my wild days are long gone, but but both do fill their stadiums. Frankfurt in particular always had the biggest ultra scene in all of Germany. I heard that they want to expand their stadium and they totally could.
You know... here's something funny. Attendances in the RL Nord 2001/02, before that explosion in attendances because of the 2006 World Cup and all those new shiny stadiums all over the country.
Just one team above 10.000, Eintracht Braunschweig. Magdeburg and Münster were just a bit above 4.000, Kiel and Paderborn just above 2.000, Aue and Chemnitz nowadays attract more than double what they had back then - and they play in the 4th Division. Even Düsseldorf just had an average attendance of merely 5.700 people.
>>
>>158388814
>gerade gegen einen anderen Ost-Verein wäre das sicher lustig, denke ich. Allerdings ist es natürlich schwierig, als Gast an Karten zu kommen
Ja stimmt, aber nächstes Mal, ne?

The NCAA can't join any Pro-Rel system or implement any just because of the sheer scale of teams that are members of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (~1100 total institutions across all divisions and sports). For Division 1 (the highest level of any sport in the NCAA), there's 214 schools that sponsor men's soccer scattered across many conferences (or independence, which means not a member of any conference). A lot of matchups have history or real soul behind them that despite very small stadium size gives the environment of lower-level club play in Europe

e.g.:
>The Mountain State Derby - West Virginia vs. Marshall
>The Backyard Brawl - West Virginia vs. Pittsburgh
>The Blue-Green Rivalry - Cal Poly vs. UC-Santa Barbara
>The Army-Navy Cup - US Military Academy, West Point ("Army") vs. US Naval Academy, Annapolis ("Navy")
>Harvard-Yale
>NC State-Wake Forest
>The Royal Rivalry - James Madison vs. Old Dominion
>Indiana-Notre Dame

Then games that aren't rivalries but are derbies.
>The Big 12-SEC Derby: West Virginia vs. UCF vs. South Carolina vs. Kentucky.
This derby arrangement happened because WVU and UCF (members of the Big 12) and South Carolina and Kentucky (members of the SEC) are members of conferences that don't sponsor men's soccer, so they are affiliate members of the Sun Belt Conference in men's soccer.
>>
>>158389458
Regarding Aachen: In Aachen, they never disappeared, of course. That was never in doubt, though I think it cooled down a little bit and is reawaking now, that's natural. They'd average 30,000 in the 2nd tier, maybe even more. But in the rest of the country, they were kind of forgotten, I mean. Many kids don't know them as a 2nd tier member, which is their historical standard. They were first by a lot in the all-time 2nd tier table when they got relegated and disappeared for 11 years. That's enough time for many people to forget about them a bit, and it means losing a lot of ground financially as well
>>
>>158389458
>Have you ever been on away day in FFM or Lautern?
I was talking about people in Mannheim. The city has 350,000 people, they must be able to fill that stadium more regularly. The only excuse would be that everyone in Mannheim is a fan of Lautern or Frankfurt, which cannot be true and would be very sad in its own right. Frankfurt and Lautern have lots of fans, including in Mannheim, but Mannheim is a bit of a disappointment when it comes to attendance
>>
>>158389220
I'm a bit surprised since their attendance rate hovered around 97%, which is good, but makes such a jump look a bit risky. 58,000 for a game against Breda sounds like quite much for the region, though I am sure filling that many seats for games against Ajax and Feyenoord or in the CL isn't hard for them. Low 50,000s seem more doable even for regular stuff. But maybe I am underestimating them
In any case, it seems you are more active than us. Probably because your economy isn't as fucked. I regularly lament that many clubs here cannot expand, even many of the smaller ones. They are financially healthy for the most part, attendances are great ... but it doesn't suffice without external partners, and all of them are suffering, it seems
>>
>>158389760
>it means losing a lot of ground financially as well
They gambled and they lost. Their new stadium bankrupted them, this is how they fell off in the first place. Their stadium just has a capacity of 30.000, now substract 3.000 for away fans, another 3.000 for security shit and you're already at 24.000. The last thing I heard about Aachen was how they kicked out their leftie ultras and another group taking their spot. This could mean that there was or is some unrest in the stands, but if you look at Hannover or Braunschweig where something similar happened, this didn't affect attendances whatsoever.
>>158389807
Ah, yes, I totally misunderstood this, my bad. It would be sad for people from Mannheim to go to Lautern, really. Imagine someone from Hamburg going to Bremen or someone from Düsseldorf going to Köln.
>>
>>158389606
oh and the NCAA also has amateurism rules so you cannot have played in the top flight or any professional setting before becoming an NCAA Student-Athlete. Though they can be compensated for their name, image, and likeness now, they're still students first and athletes second

There's people who've played in the third-tier of their national leagues (e.g.: Jacob Redenfors of WVU who played in the Swedish third division or Roman Anast of Cal Poly who played at Sacramento Republic FC in the USL Championship)
>>
>>158390001
The stadium hurt, but so did falling to the 4th tier because of it and earning basically no money for 11 years while professional football rapidly expanded as a business and bringing in much more money. Back when Aachen was in the 2nd tier, salaries were much lower and clubs got way less money. Competitions were less lopsided as well because of that
The Aachen stadium thing is funny, it cost 45 million and almost killed them. Build that stadium today and it costs 150 million or something. Karlsruhe built a stadium with basically the same size, probably some more VIP boxes (where most of the profit comes from after all) and that project cost 170 million. It wasn't a complete rebuild, but you could easily argue that a complete rebuild would have been more expensive, I guess
Capacity of 33,000 in Aachen isn't bad. It got called megalomania back then, and they were foolish for planning with Bundesliga money after getting relegated. But the club can fill that stadium. As a regular member of the 2nd tier, it would probably be too small already for some games
Still, a shame about the old stadium, of course. That was legendary, the new stadium is more generic. But it was kind of inevitable, unfortunately. Maybe they could have tried to do it like Union Berlin, though
The ultra thing was years ago, I think that has long since been covered
And true, Mannheimers shouldn't support Lautern unless they really are Lauterners who moved there
>>
>>158390259
Chiming in on the Monnem-Lautre thing:
I know some KSC fans that go to Sinsheim for big games/European nights. Not because they want to see Hoffe, but to see high tier football.
Not 100% the same, but yeah. If one of them played much higher than the other, I could somewhat understand visiting the rival's stadium on those grounds.

Visting Hoffenheim games without even being a fan of this perversion is beyond disgusting, but interesting. Just watch the game on TV, although I'd consider even that borderline if you're a KSC fan. What are you in the stadium for? There's no atmosphere there anyway
>>

Normally not. Or if they do, it's even more grim that Hoffenheim's stadium is usually half empty unless a big club (Bayern, Dortmund, Hamburg, Schalke, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Köln) rolls around and brings 12,000 to 15,000 away fans there
The thought of people who call themselves Karlsruhe fans willingly going to Hoffenheim games is very confusing to me

This graph made me think about our highest possible total attendance. 18 teams, 306 total games, 17 home games for everyone and all sold out
In such a case, with future confirmed (small) expansions, we'd max out at 16.6 million, an average of 54,250
However, 5 of the 18 clubs required for that due to their stadium capacity are not in the Bundesliga right now. Berlin (Hertha) and Leipzig at least would also struggle to sell out every game, of course. Düsseldorf, Nürnberg, Hannover, Freiburg, Mainz, and Karlsruhe might also slightly miss a 100% attendance rate. But 16.1 million (97% attendance) should be doable in any case
If we were like the Premier League, with 20 teams and 380 games, the maximum would increase to 20.85 million and an average of 54,870. 20.2 million might be possible in any case
7 of the 20 clubs with the largest stadiums are not in the Bundesliga right now

>for KSC fans
I refuse to believe that actual fans would do this. Rather, people from Karlsruhe that don't feel too strongly about football, for which football is just something that happens on TV to entertain them. It's not quite like the earlier mentioned Köln and Düsseldorf or Hannover and Braunschweig, rivalries and hatred between cities going back to the Middle Ages that now also extend to the football pitch because of course you would hate the other city and its team if you're from these places. Hoffenheim is just some village and the team is just some nothing club.
Perhaps we all underestimate just how casual normalfags really are.

>The ultra thing was years ago, I think that has long since been covered
Yeah both ACU in Aachen and UB in Braunschweig was almost 20 years ago. Surely that's no issue anymore nowadays.

I'd like to see what goes on in their heads then

I talked about it earlier since it was mentioned, but what do y'all think about College Soccer? Sure it's not as big or flashy as college football but it's pretty comfy

>thread about attendance

as always

You are invited to contribute something as well. If not, then stay mad

I have no idea about college soccer, I don't think anyone here not from the US does. But as an avid amateur football enjoyer, I imagine it to be quite comfy, roughly comparable to a good Kreisliga game here in atmosphere and surely with enough quality to be fun as well. So I'm positive at first, although the concept of college sports in general is pretty foreign to us

it wasn't my intention to disrupt this harmonious deference to corporate hierarchy as applied to football, cattl- i mean carry on

You can probably find college soccer videos or recaps on YouTube or something. If I were to explain it in Euro terms:
D1 is the Top Flight of College Athletics. All the big names of American colleges are here (Yale, Georgia, Texas, Stanford, Michigan, West Virginia, Ohio State, Miami, etc). In football (American football), D1 is split into FCS and FBS, but that distinction outside of American Football is nonexistent.
D2 is Second-Tier.
D3 is Non-League. Member of the pyramid, yes, but purely amateur (aka no sports scholarships generally).
Within all of these divisions are different conferences. Being a conference member is not obligatory but people usually are for ease of scheduling. Each Division has their own tournament at the end of the season within their conference, and then a national tournament to crown the National Champion.

Sounds well-organized, not bad

- Brazilian Serie C and D (my team often get relegated/promoted to these)
- Any sudakino important game
- Arab leagues (due to how easy it is to find streams)
- Women's football when there's some qt playing and literally nothing else to watch

D2 and D3 teams can play D1 teams but they are usually exhibitions in preseason or during the Spring or, if during the regular season, don't really count towards anything even in ranking (but if you lose it does)

In the postseason though, cross-divisional play is not permitted for fair play reasons. It's pretty kino, check here for highlights example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHoHSwnl2eU
