was cruising around youtube and this Kurzgesagt video is making me anxious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijFm6DxNVyI

I would've thought the universe would use vacuum on a Planck scale so there's no chance for microscopic bubble nucleation to exceed a critical size.

Vacuum decay is a hypothetical thing that hypothetically happen in our universe, or in other hypothetical universes, that is very destructive. The idea is old but the relevant modern idea comes from Quantum Field Theory and the work of Sidney Coleman. In the picture posited by Coleman, it is possible (or even likely) that the universe we see that is basically a slightly excited state of the possible states of quantum field theory, but that what we think of as a state with no particles or energy (the vacuum state) might not actually be the lowest energy state, and some sort of decay from our “false vacuum” may occur. Coleman posited that the process would start as a nucleation process; it would happen at one point and expand like a bubble. The calculations indicate that once the bubble was formed, its radial rate of expansion would quickly approach the speed of light, meaning that this exploding bubble would likely engulf anyone before they even got the chance to see it coming.

Coleman’s calculations are still widely accepted today, except he made some predictions that were not supported in subsequent tests. He predicted that coherent beams of pions would “roll over” the vacuum state, but I am pretty sure people made such beams and nothing actually happened.

So realistically I don’t think there is any real risk of vacuum decay; even if it were possible I think it more likely it comes as a giant shockwave out of space and we all die instantly; aside from that possibility I think we are totally safe

The idea is this: The vacuum of empty space isn't empty, it's full of quantum fields and since they are quantum they have non-zero minimum energies. The one usually mentioned when it comes to the idea of vacuum decay is the Higgs Field since it fits the requirements best. So the field has a minimum energy, but for whatever reason it's might not be the real minimum. At least one lower energy state exists. So at any time due to the rules of quantum mechanics, even if it's extremely unlikely, the field at some point anywhere in the universe could jump to that lower state releasing a whole bunch of energy in the process and fundamental changing the laws of physics at that point. If / when that happens however that change would then propagate at the speed of light to the rest of the universe. So at any moment we could all die, our atoms ripped apart, and we'd never know it was coming.

I don't think there's any build up with black holes creating a central movement with itself.

It's yet another para-religious apocalyptic surrogate narrative to discourage people from trying to extract useful work from the vacuum, like the one about the risk of atmosphere igniting due to atomic bombs, the planet being devoured by a black hole due to CERN and other inane shit like that.

why worry about something you can't see coming? who cares

    >>17077300
You should really stop worrying about popsci slop
    >>
    >>17078162
And how are we supposed to extract work out of the vacauum?

    not with that attitude

it would need to be within 100 lightyears to effect us in our lifetimes the odds of that are basically zero

When you die, you’ll practice making small planets and solar systems with your mind. And then you’ll go find some humans on earth or some other earth like planet (or whatever life form you want), abduct and hypnotize them against their will, and use their sperm and eggs to seed this planet from a UFO. Then who knows, you might become God.
