This thread is going to be our jumping-off point for OC album 36! Here, anons and namefigs can discuss their schedules and make suggestions for the release deadline and stuff like that. We'll also discuss the cover art and possible names for the album.

And of course, you can also submit early songs, post samples or stems if you want people to use or remix them, or make plans to collaborate.

On the topic of AI, I'm kind of interested in using RVC to change the texture of voices, and having VSTs custom generated. I've always wanted a waveshaper VST where the curve shapes and point positions can be automated and I finally had AI put one together for me today, but I wouldn't use it in a song that I'm going to post here without asking the community first.
    >>
    >>13218288
Sorry that was meant to be a question. So... what's the consensus here?
    >>
    >>13218288
I don't care as long as it isn't fully prompted suno slop like Kyrie was doing
    >>
The first thing I'd like to discuss is the use of color graphics. Your choice of pictures has not been conducive to bringing traffic to these threads. Please consider thisin the future.

    >>
    >>13218360
This is precisely what I mean by prompted slop. These are supposed to be OC albums not slop albums.
    >>
    >>13218362
just wanted to get that clarified and out there. technically this was written and carefully crafted, not just "Do a song about the nice gril", but the issue here is that it was basically all prompted out and didn't actually include any original music. Now let's say I had AI make music but I sang, or made the music but had AI sing? Where is the line?
    >>
    >>13218363
Personally I would like to see only music fully composed/arranged/sequenced by human hands. Like you said, original music. Using AI tools to create samples/text to speech vocals to incorporate in your composition would be acceptable, but not much beyond that I think. Anything spit out by directly prompting suno or whatever is just going to be garbage, if it's going to be allowed I personally won't be contributing.

Your fortune: You will meet a dark handsome stranger
    >>
    >>13218366
fair and agreed, I think this is the right move. AI as a tool, not as a means to "create".
    >>
It should go without saying that this is not the platform for prompted music. If I recall correctly, when I started the last OC album thread, kyrie's thread for AI music was still up. These threads are explicitly distinct from the AI music threads, as a platform for the creative expression of the s4s community. I have no problem banning all AI audio tools completely from use in future s4s OC albums (insofar as I'm hosting them) if that's what the community here wants.

    >>13218343
I do enjoy monochromatic palettes because, by their nature, they avoid clashing. But you make a good point, anon. Even though this *is* a diagram of some of the internal workings of the classic TB-303 bassline synthesizer, it does blend into the board and therefore it's not very eye-catching. As board participation is the number one priority here, I'll keep this in mind when I set up the next thread.

LMMS is alright, the main issues are that it has unwieldy automation and - in your case - you can't natively run windows VSTs. But ZynAddSubFx is pretty fully featured, for example. I usually tell people that in the long run, starting on LMMS is going to give you a better understanding of the fundamentals of production than starting on FL would. Whether or not LMMS is going to work for you as a DAW is really a matter of the type of sound design you're trying to do, and your level of experience.

should we decide on a theme and then people loosely follow it or be completely open ended
    >>
    >>13220502
I don't know how much people took notice of the theme last time. We can do a theme this time, but just by the nature of the board you kind of have to expect that some people are not going to follow it at all and be okay with that.

Also, we had two songs submitted late for the last album that I'm assuming I should carry over to this album. So those might be off-topic if we do a theme.

None of that precludes us from giving the album a theme, these are just things to consider. The case could also be made that picking a theme can do nothing negative since, were the theme to determine just the name and cover art of the album and be sort of unrelated to the contents, it would be just a normal [s4s] album.

I haven't really been present in thread this week, but I'll probably be posting more next week. My hope is that being more consistent with OC and keeping the thread near the top of the catalogue will keep things a little bit more active and help build some momentum. If it stays dead, though, I might consider letting this thread die and starting a new thread with a more eye catching OP image like anon said.

    >>13226305
If you prefer the more abrupt ending and that's what fits your original vision, that is totally fine though. I would suggest doing a very sharp fade out with a volume or lowpass curve just so that there isn't a click. Sharp jumps in volume can be hard on some speaker systems so it's always safer to smooth them. In such a case, you would be smoothing on a time scale so small that it wouldn't be noticeable to the ear, except that there may be less of a pop (insofar as there was a pop in the original, although I didn't really notice anything but I often feel it's better to be safe than sorry with these situations) so it would preserve your idea and would not change the ending of the song in any meaningful way. I've personally never had any speaker damage from this, although I've definitely had samples that I accidentally cut at the peak of a wave and they would end with an audible click until I smoothed them.
There's probably a word for that, but I don't remember it if I ever knew it.

be truthful with me is the bass too scuffed should i unplug the arpeggiator and draw it in?

Your fortune: Good news will come to you by mail
    >>
    >>13239523
I'm guessing the arpeggiator is on the bass, and then you have a separate sub? Because otherwise I don't know where the arpeggiator is. If the arpeggiator is what's giving the motion to the bass, I would basically try everything before cutting it. Although, if you're running it up octaves, you could probably get a similar effect with filtering instead if you needed to since the instrument is effectively playing the same note either way. My first instinct would be to just pull the instrument down to the low mids, high bass area, because right now it's more toward the upper end of the mids, almost like a lead instrument. But then again, I've gotten that advice before on instruments where my intention was to have them there so since I don't know what you're going for, I don't want to tell you something that's wrong. I think the bass as it is now is definitely a good sound, but at the very least I would (selectively, if you have the time to automate and want to be less destructive) dull it a bit on top so it's not clashing as much with the other elements in the mid-high end, and I would fill out the low mids and bass - you can see there are times where they get particularly empty.

On the off chance that you weren't asking for serious advice and you just wanted me to say that it was good - which I would completely understand and I'm not even being sarcastic - It's a nice arrangement of a lot of elements, and the dynamic tempo is hard to pull off but you're doing an effective job of it.
    >>
    >>13239648
Also, if you're interested, you could make a study of Destroid's "Get Stupid", which uses either an arpeggiator or step LFO for the bassline so it's a similar concept. Since it's Space Laces, the sound design at least is pretty solid, everything else aside.
    >>
    >>13239648
There's a bass and kick but no sub, the arpeggiator is controlling the timing of the bass and I have an LFO animating the arp. sync rate to switch between 1/16 and 1/16T; so this LFO is really controlling the bass pattern. I've listened to it too many times and am really having trouble telling if the *pattern* sounds on or if it's a little sloppy as a result of shortcutting with this c/v method. I think it sounds almost right but maybe not quite. Yeah the bass has some synthy mids going on i think part of the reason is the slower filter envelope making it sweep up through some of the mids? That's good mixing advice and I appreciate it, I will try adjusting the bass to see if that brings the muddiness down.

    Your fortune: Excellent Luck
    >>
    >>13239648
Oh, the bass however is multi osc. so that's probably where you're gettin the sub but it's just one instrument

Ohhh, okay I get what you're saying. Completely different than what I thought you meant, that's my bad. The timing flows naturally (at least in my opinion). It's got a pretty similar feel to a reese, so I think you actually even have a good window for error in shifting it around without making it jarring if you had some need to do so later, but it fits well with the rhythm as it is now for sure.

I was thinking Drescher Grotesk BT Demi and FF Bauer Grotesk DemiBold were also pretty close, but that's just from whatthefont... I wouldn't be surprised though if the real typeface was something that they got in Germany in the 90s that would be impossible to track down now.

They're all pretty close and similar. I used a 1997 cover since I couldnt find the 1999 one in high quality. Seems to use the same font. Futura No. 2 Demi Bold is a little bit wider than it but might either be the same font family or just squeezed slightly

This is the cover I found

I couldn't really get this cleaned enough for a good vector trace, and I don't trust myself to do it by hand. So I guess font matching is probably the best option unless someone else wants to take a stab at it.

Thanks for trying, anon! It's almost certainly in the Futura font family, somewhere! There's about 7000 different variations of it. This is FuturaEF Heavy with kerning set to optical and tracking set to -20, whatever that means LOLE. The letters and numbers are almost an exact match except confusingly the apostrophe is flipped upside down which seems to be a common trait of futura...actually I just tried ' ' and the second one is flipped to its proper rotation, which is something I didnt even know was a thing LOLE
