Have you ever talked to someone and they made you realize how poor you are?
>>85865908No because I'm not poor.
Yeah all the time.>they tell me about thing they did / got>i consider what they must've paid for it>realize it is out of my reach, has always been out of my reach, and is likely to remain out of my reach>suddenly feel very alienated from them and find it difficult to relate to and engage with what they're telling me
>>85867104Same I was at community college last Wednesday, and I struck up a conversation with a guy who happened to have the same name as me.He casually asked me if I played a newly released game. I told him that I only had a small, used gaming laptop with a GTX 1060He then mentioned that he had both a gaming laptop and a gaming PC one of which had a GTX 5060.In addition, he told me that he had sold his Switch to a friend for like 70 bucks just because he wanted to buy one with a Pokemon theme.I jokingly said that I would've bought it from him if we'd known each other earlier, but I failed the socialization check because I think I came across as jealous and envious, which I kinda was.I worked for three whole summers to buy that because my parents can't afford to give me money and some people just get stuff because they wanted them
It registers less as "Oh wow, I'm a pleb/poor" and more as "Holy FUCK is this clueless dickhead sheltered and naive." There exists a degree of worldliness that people from rich backgrounds are forever locked out of, however far they travel, by merit of not living in the world. They're always trying to manufacture some tale of trial and triumph these days because people have made being oppressed or victimized into a position of privilege and power. They honestly feel that it is unfair, deep down, that they will never be given the same credit as somebody who started from zero and is nonetheless their peer. They want to have had it just as hard and to enjoy the credit therein while also having it easy and enjoying the benefits thereof. Most of the time this will reveal itself in a moment when they are particularly slick and oily like a scheming court eunuch, and come across as low in doing so. Sometimes, though? They'll just refer to something like "the help" in a certain tone. In any case, when they're called out, they'll chalk it up people's disgust at them to the peasantry's sour grapes, when it is in fact the contempt of the prince towards their vain striving-to a nobility that needs no golden ornament, and to which they'll always be shit underheel.
>>85865908Yes, my ex grew up in a neighborhood where all of the houses are a million dollars and up. If you ever hear someone say they aren't rich but "comfortable" they're probably very well off.
>>85867381>Holy FUCK is this clueless dickhead sheltered and naiveI had a woman get angry at me because I told her a heated floor isn't something poor people have. She told me they weren't rich and that her dad had to work for everything, but I knew they had their own business where, sure, he worked, but it was highly specialized custom work and he had plenty of employees.
>>85867443>had a woman get angry at me because I told her a heated floor isn't something poor people have. She told me they weren't rich and that her dad had to work for everythingOkay, this. This is precisely what I mean. It has every element of it, too.>niche luxury that, no, not everyone has is assumed to be normal for poor people >offense is taken upon being corrected about this, even neutrally>the "we're not rich" script>the "my daddy worked hard" scriptIt's all there. Play Mad Libs with the particulars and this is the kind of locked-out-of-reality shit I mean.
>>85867182>used gaming laptop with a GTX 1060Holy fuck you are poorMy condolences I hope you win the lottery one day.>>85867381Yes, this.Everyone genuinely believes they are middle class or just getting by, all of their luxury and products are small things that everyone obviously can afford. You can only realize and understand that you and your parents are poor when you speak to someone who basically lives in a completely different world than yours
yeah one of my best friends makes well over twice as much as me, and it's constantly trying to pay for me to be included in her rich people vacations and shit.
>>85865908I was once a wagie for a goverment bigshot in my teens. One day a city councilman/local warlord swung by and asked me to courier around half a mil of bills, stuffed on a grocery plastic bag like it's just potatoes, didnt even give money for a taxi so me and my mate had to take it with us on public transportation
