Many ages have passed since the dark wizard MORDRED was cast down and slain by his mortal nemesis, a wizard without a name. MORDRED's tyranny had been broken and his beasts made tame, but the world has been forever rent asunder by his malice and dissolution...

The DUNGEON is deep and full of monsters. It is said that fabulous treasures and the legendary object of power, the ORB OF MORDRED, lie waiting at the very bottom. They also say that those who have entered have never returned alive, but they do say a lot of things...

    [Inspired by @non's @mulet Quest.]

Digging. Digging. Digging. Through the depths of the earth. You are a tunneler. It is your stated purpose. It is why you were born.

Digging, digging... Digging. Your order was to find the Dungeon and nothing more. It was to this end that you began to dig a tunnel. You were to dig with all of your strength until you executed the order. Forever, if needed.

Digging... Digging... ... Digging. But eventually, at the end of your tunnel, you struck light. There were no procedures on what to do next. There was no one else from the surface to relieve you. So you began to wait for your next assignment.

Waiting... Waiting... ... Waiting... And ever since then, an extremely long time had passed.

All you can see was that light flickering in the darkness. Just out of reach.

    Suddenly, one day, something happened.

    INJECTION SITE.confirm(xl1,d1)
    Time to begin.

You know that there will be new orders now.

You are still young, but it is hard to stand...

You scrabble upright using the rock walls to steady yourself. The weariness of your flesh weighs down on you, but you persist. It is these new orders which give you purpose and the light which causes your heart to still beat...

You extend your mandibles. Your flesh twist into a familiar set of hook-like claws.

    And you dig through.

    >>
    >>6472879
The air feels different here... Quiet, but not empty.

Flames line the hewn stone walls, blazing cheerily as if recently lit. For the first time in a long, long time, you feel warmth upon your carapace.

You do not know what this place is but...

You think you would like to remember this place for the rest of your life.

Welcome to the Dungeon. Enjoy your stay.
    >>
    >>6472886
You hear something coming. Its steps are light and swift and there's a shaking of metal tools.

There is no time to react.

"Percy, you fucking ass, you're not scheduled for the repair job for the ONE CRACK on this floor and you sure as Hell aren't meant to be drilling through the damn walls WE JUST CLEANED YESTERDAY with that STUPID beak of yours like some—"

A two-legs comes into view. At its waist is a red key.

"Kinda... I—" The two-legs goes silent and deathly still as it stares at you. You stare at it.

She speaks in a voice of a worker or a young queen, rather than a drone, but she is clearly not a fellow child of Formus nor one of the Heavenly Host. She stands on two legs. She has no mandibles like an insect or fleshy face like a human. She has a blue cap of sorts skewed on two thin horns. She is very red.

You have absolutely no idea what this thing is.

"Oh. Oh shit." She finds her voice at last. "It's an adventurer."

She turns around to shout. "Hey! HEY! EVERYONE, GET OFF YOUR BUTTS! WE GOT A CODE RED! CODE RED! CODE RED!!!"

It's just a hunch, but you have a strange feeling that things will become difficult rather soon.

    You stop digging.

You understand each word, one by one, turning them over in your mind like smooth stones in the middle of a cave stream, but the entire picture eludes you. You don't know any adventurers around here, do you?

And the shouting is becoming loud. Terribly, terribly loud. Your mandibles click in growing duress as you try to repeat the words you have been given but when was the last time anyone asked for you to give back the words you must repeat?

"kkkkk... aaaallll..." You try to speak, sounding off slowly, softly, but inertia of your entire life in almost silent obedience strangles your attempt.

A sense of dread impresses you, takes control of you. The red thing is shouting, shouting, shouting still, its own words far away and yet so close that it's hard to think on formulating your own words.

It just doesn't make sense, this sense of dread, a mess of sense, this dizziness, is distress, a fear, I fear, this hunger—

You stop thinking. You stop trying to understand. You are driven to action. You must execute orders. Just execute orders. Just execute orders.

You grip the pickaxe tightly and take a step forward...

... switch your grip and swing with all your might!

There's a tremendous CRACK as your pickaxe crashes into the red thing's head and drives into the stone wall behind it. There are no final words.

    Two-Legs dies instantly.

The body goes slack and you quietly watch for any signs of life. Its "flesh" starts to bubble, then lose cohesion, split into strands, slough off, fall apart, diffuse, melt. Your antennae twitch as the pungent odor of organic rot and faint gore in the air as the corpse (and it is indeed a corpse, yes) lyses in front of you.

You take out your pick and keep it at the ready, but you sense no one coming.

    It is quiet now...

You pause in deliberation as you receive a great deal many orders for your meager brain to process.

Your mandibles click as if physically chewing on the meat of each task. One step at a time.

You look down to the pitiful corpse. You tilt your head slowly, one from side to another. There's a particular word that impresses upon you.

"Frfff... Fri-eeend?" you rasp, forcing the words out through the holes in your carapace. It is one of the few words you have and that you've used while you lived in the hive, one amongst many sisters and a few brothers crowding, cr@wling all around you. You have a few words like that, like yes and no and ma'am and dig and there and mine and tunnel and guard and heal and help and find and demon and larvae and hungry.

"..." There's no response. It doesn't seem like much for conversation, anyway.

You decide to stop thinking about it.

There's a key on this pitiful corpse you've made, so you take it and the mace. The soaked rags and its somehow very dry flat cap are left behind for now. You consider slurping up the already drying remnants of the maintenance "goon," but something about the smell of it gives you pause.

    Acquired
    - Red Key (Very Light, No Size (0))
    - Mace (Not Light, Very Bulky (3))

The mace feels solid in your hand, but it will be a rather tricky and sluggish to use in coordination with your pickaxe and the lantern you're currently carrying. You are not Drizzt, after all. (Whoever that is. You've heard that phrase when a big sister had four spoons at once at dinner. A very hazy memory now.)

    EQUIPMENT
Arm Pair - +2 Pickaxe (12 base Piercing DMG, STR, Very Slow, Axes Skill, +DMG against Constructs and Walls, +Blunt or Lodge-In on Crit)
    Hand - Lantern (20/20)
Hand - +1 Mace (8 base Blunt DMG, STR, Slow, Maces and Staves Skill, Knockback, +Blunt or Knockback on Crit) [COORDINATION PENALTY]
    Holstered -

There are tools inside the small box by the DRINK box. A screwdriver, a hammer, a pencil, a notepad, and a dungeon employee ID for a "Rodney."

In organized handwriting, someone has written a list of tasks to perform dutifully. Very commendable. The times mean nothing at all to you and most of them are crossed out.

    TO-DO:
    - Deliver luxury latrine components X
    - Assemble latrine stalls in main hall XXXXX
    - Refuel lanterns and relight candles X
    - Maintenance upkeep (vending machines)
    - Kill Rich for stealing MY employee of the month
    - Figure out how to dispose of a body without anyone noticing

    Interesting, but not concerning.

You consider the tall boxes. Vending machines. Vend. Vendor. A vendor that is a machine. Yes, simple enough. But where is the vendor? Inside of it?

You inspect the machine further. There are several colorful rectangles here that make neat clicking sounds like your jaws when you press on them. You look down and—

    OMG

    (oh my gosh)

    OMG OMG OMG

    Your feelers wave frantically.

"itsssss... pie..!" you can't help but say aloud with the words you have. There is a delicious treat inside!

You kneel down and reach for it, but instantly bump your hand against something you can't see! You reach out and touch it the obstacle again, feeling a strangely smooth, yet warm as if there's fire coming from the inside like the stones of a surface or a lid of a hot pot. is this fire magic?

you wrack your meager brain again. there's an invisible thing, no, you can see invisible... a tran.. traps... see-through thing here. It is a luxurious material from the humans and their vendor-traders. What was it called? GLASS, yes, there's a square of glass preventing your ingress.

You stare longingly at the DELICIOUS PIE behind the glass, think slowly for a moment, then use the red key on the machine. You twist right, careful not to upset the inner mechanisms, then twist left until you hear a small click.

The glass panel flips away. The fruity smell and warmth that waft out are incredible.

You reach out and take out the platter of PIE, almost with reverence. It smells as GOOD AS IT LOOKS.

You extend your tongue to have a sample...

Theme of BLISS (Stone in Focus (Aphex Twin cover)) https://youtu.be/rAnS57JF1J0

The sweetness of fruit and sugar and the flaky, fatty taste of the bread, crust, that is, strikes your sense like a dynamite bomb.

oh me, oh my, what a wonderful pie!
it's so good, it might make you cry...

(If you could cry in the first place, that is.)

You take your sweet time eating this wonderful treat-treat, hunched over, antennae folded flat against your head. Mandibles chew and crush and make a smeared mess across the plate and your face, but it's okay. Everything is going to be okay. Your glossa goes over the plate, dissolving and lapping up the resulting pie liquid and crumbs, making sure you get every morsel out of the moment as you can.

You feel incredibly satisfied. You didn't even need to break open the vendor with your pickaxe, like you thought you would.

But as with all good things, it comes to pass.

You look longingly at the platter in your hands. There is no more pie to be found. You look around and there is no one to give any. Mmm, how sad...

Then, a new smell. No, two more.

You smell two living things coming this way, like animal and sweat and fabric and a bit like blood. Hard to tell what they are. Two things, which you smell before you hear.

"Look, I don't like her as much as anyone else does," a not-drone-but-drone-sounding voice says through the right doorway. "But you know that the boss is going to punch our heads through our asses if we don't —"

"Oi, jusshutit you slahkin' git." A rougher voice growls out. "Gimme da key out too. Fahcking Rodney lockin' ahlwheys lokkin' it behind 'er..."

Quick, move two spaces to the east and hide next to the wall with your pickaxe ready, they aren't gonna like you killing the other. If the closest one sees you when entering the room, pickaxe his head. Otherwise, wait for both of them to pass you and have their backs to you, then jam the pickaxe in the head of the closest one.

So you do as you've been told, and you swing down with all of your might onto the closest one's head...

    >Autohit, Instantkill

There's a horrific CRACK as you swing down the pickaxe with crushing force! A spectacular spray of bone splinters and gore fly out from its broken skull! You can't help but wince at the visceral sight.

"Oh GOD, OH GOD." The other red thing, not like the other red thing from before, a little more familiar in fact, you know what these things are, surel— "ROBIN! ROBIIIIIIIIIIN! HELP! THERE'S A MANIAC ON THE LOOSE!"

You thought too long. Not good. Not good. Insect jaws click in agitation as you try to pull the pickaxe free, but it's wedged so deeply in, that it's actually taking you time to remove it. Uh oh.

The other red one starts scurrying away on little gob— GOBLIN, yes! — feet and you know that if you take your time removing your pickaxe, he's going to disappear out of sight and get away. But even if you chase after him, he's got quite the headstart already...

You start to feel a bit worried, but you're doing well. You're following your orders without fail.

[Okay, fuck this, let's cut to the chase. I'm not going to finish the animation, otherwise we're not going anywhere anytime soon, and I've got a midterm tomorrow.

    So, according to the filename...]

You crush the goblin's skull in a single blow.

    >Autohit, Instantkill
    GOBLIN: -1 HP -> -41 HP
    The goblin has been slain.

    It's quiet now...
    >>
    >>6476464
You understand the importance of being thorough and destroying every part of the enemy's operating structure to be absolutely sure that a vanquished enemy stays dead. You would treat the corpse as an object, a thing to disassemble very quickly, rather than as a carcass to butcher, hacking off its limbs and destroying the body outright. Standard procedure.

But because this is only a goblin and it is not a demonic foe, it is enough to simply kill him. And so you have.

Okay. One step at a time.

You extend your mandibles and quickly hack off the goblin's arm to eat as you've been ordered.

    MORALE: N/A -> N/A
    SATIETY: FAIRLY HUNGRY -> SATED

This raw flesh tastes terrible. You are fine.

You check and make sure that the mace isn't going anywhere (don't forget!) then drag the corpse back to his fellows and make a nice pile like how you've seen your sisters stack up the dead of war and tally up their mortal belongings in preparation for the funerary rites or corpse disposal.

The red two-legs, the goon, seems to have dissolved further and her? hat still seems dry. You drop the heavier body of the green two-legs first, then check for anything interesting...

    Oh.

    Acquired
    - Unknown Scroll TRHZIATHARITHRZA (Very Light, 1 Slot)
    - Coin purse (Very Light, 1 Slot)

The scroll seems... mystical. Important. Like a a sister weathercaller presence feeling or maybe a wizard. It's a magical scroll, clearly, but you don't know what it does at a glance...

Maybe you can get someone to figure it... No. You're far from home and from your family.

You put that thought aside and look into the coin purse. Inside are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6... 7 ... 20 gold pieces, z... pen... zennies as you faintly recall. There is also a note of sorts. It reads:
"BIG THANKS FOR BABYSITTING THAT DUMB MAGE, URUK. GOOD THING WE TOOK OUT ALL THE SPELLBOOKS BEFORE WE LOCKED HER UP IN THAT BAILEY, HAHA!
    - GORDON"

    Interesting, but not concerning.

As expected, there is nothing of interest on the naked goblin's corpse. You put him down on top of the green two-legs, then turn your attention to the vendor machine that reads DRINK in bright letters. You hear the hum of its bar of light on its top. It's a weird sound and you don't know how it's making luminescence.
    >>
    >>6476471
There's an opened part of the vendor machine in a square shape, but there's nothing in the hole. You check along the sides of the machine for an opening, but there is none either. There is a blue lock on the left side of the glowing box. You double check your key color, but alas. It's red.

You stare at the vendor machine. Nothing seems to happen. You close the vendor machine door.

Effervescent Purple Potion - 7 ̶Z̶ (An unlabeled flask containing a purple bubbling liquid. It seems important.)
ICHOR OF THE GREAT EARTH - 3 ̶Z̶ (You don't understand what these letters mean. Maybe it's like those runes in the "language of the moon?" (You don't know what that means either.) "마음에 안 드는 거 있음! 언제든 말하라고!")
Out of Stock (Please call the designated dungeon service phone number or summon your minion to do so.)
Diggle Nog - 7 ̶Z̶ (A big ol' frothing mug full of Diggle Nog that's sure to put you in a festive mood. Now vegan!)

You quickly wave the thing away and just like that, it vanishes!

Your feelers wave around in distress, such is the shock of the sudden vision. What was that?

You hear an alarm blare from the broken vendor! Uh oh.

You feel a strange tingling sensation across your carapace like being outside on a stormy day on the surface. You feel exposed...

From the pierced side of the vendor machine, something like blood and water immediately flow out. You hear something... sparkling? magicky? flickery? slightly before the bar of lights go out.

Inside the broken body of the vending machine, you see there...
    - 1, 2, 3... Quite a lot of broken bottles.
    - 1 cardboard sign
    - 2 bottles with a spider on them
    - 1 bubbling potion
    - 1 frothing mug full of fluid
    - 3 bottles of water
    - 13 copper coins?

Apart from your small knapsack where you keep all your inventory items and your newly acquired coin purse, you do not currently have a spare container equipped on your body or in your hands. Your simple tunic likewise has no pockets to store items inside.

One day, perhaps even these dire circumstances may change.

    >>

I mean yeah, but we don't know how the Marking and alarm magics work, do they track adventurers even after they leave? Maybe it clears up immediately and we go back down.

Or we should set up a killzone in one of these tunnels.
    >>

MARKED - BAD THINGS COMING. Everyone on the current floor is aware of your presence and current position.

[Passed out. Here's what the Marked status entails. Fun ant fact: did you know that ants take hundreds of micronaps, a less than a minute each, in a single day? Can't blame NULL for sleeping on the job, hehe.]

    >>
    >>6476790
    >>6477026
We should explore the rest of the floor. I don't think the dungeon jannies are going to like us now no matter what.

    >>
    >>6477035

    >>6476853
You reach into the guts of the vendor machine and grab the bottles as directed, tucking them all nice and snug as, well, a bug in a rug. Your tough carapace lets you brush harmlessly against a few jagged edges and everything is okay.

INVENTORY (Small Knapsack - 9/9 Items - FULL!)
Flask of Oil (5/5) (Very Light, 1 Slot)
Potion of Curing (Very Light, 1 Slot)
Red Key (Very Light, 0 Slots)
Unknown Scroll TRHZIATHARITHRZA (Very Light, 1 Slot)
Coin Purse (Very Light, 1 Slot)
Spider Bottles x2 (Very Light, 2 Slots)
Unknown Purple Bubbling Potion (Very Light, 1 Slot)

Your knapsack is a little heavier than before, but it's not terribly heavy nor particularly encumbering. You've certainly carried heavier loads. You dig the rocks. You've moved rocks. It's what makes you, you. There's not a problem here.

The noise of the still screaming alarm is less bothersome out in the east hallway. You make sure not to step in too much blood as you wouldn't want to make yourself or the dungeon too dirty and grab the mace in one of your hands. It's a very good mace, you think.

    EQUIPMENT
Arm Pair - +2 Pickaxe (12 base Piercing DMG, STR, Very Slow, Axes Skill, +DMG against Constructs and Walls, +Blunt or Lodge-In on Crit)
    Hand - Lantern (20/20)
Hand - Hand - +1 Mace (8 base Blunt DMG, STR, Slow, Maces and Staves Skill, Knockback, +Blunt or Knockback on Crit) [COORDINATION PENALTY]
    Holstered -

Your feelers wave in circles as you stop. Now here's a real dilemma: there is a set of double doors ahead of you and a single door to your right.

There is a board made of wood on the wall with a lot of papers on it.

You sense several things moving on the other side of the wall to your right... You hear shuffling. You hear skittering.

There's an uneasy calm about you...
    >What would you like to do?

If we can detect movement through walls, that is a mighty useful ability to have.
Could put our head up to the wall to check if we can get any more information about the other side. If it's nothing major then can go check out the paper board.
    >>
    >>6477382
Let's listen then. Wait for it. Watch for it.

You can't see or smell through the thick stone walls, of course, but you can still listen through the nearby door and feel a few vibrations if you pay careful enough attention. So you try doing just that.

You hear shuffling in place, like feet dragging along the ground, and a light groaning, like a human or some other non-sister with a tummy problem. The owner's pace is slow and there's a few dull thumps through the wall, as if the owner keeps bumping against the spot where you're listening right now. Bump, bump, bump.

There's other smaller sounds as well. You hear a faint chittering? Squeaking? You have to take your time to understand the difference. The owners of the sounds seem... less... the size of... less big than the goblin or your pickaxe. They keep going back and forth as well.

The stone bricks under your hands feel quite robust despite their rough hewing and haphazard construction. This dungeon place is somewhat impressive considering how many stone bricks there are in one place. It's very cift... ciz... civilized. The design is very human. You can't help but think that they're totally unlike the tunnels of your home, which is now very, very far away...

You know your stones. You could dig through these simple walls as easily as you please.

There are quite a number of documents and notices of sorts. Let's see here...

On the top left, there's a crumpled paper talking about safety warning. You have to take your time with reading it, but it seems very important.

There used to be something called a "ecu-something" somewhere in the main dungeon.
Some of the altars to the gods were deemed too dangerous to the dungeon staff because of the arrival of adventurers so they have been hidden away or destroyed when possible. There's a special exception for the spider altars in place but you can't see an explanation.

Well, that's good! A good, safe, and happy colony always protects its workers.

Vaguely, you get the sense that adventurers are a pretty dangerous bunch! You sure wouldn't want to meet one of them.

In the corner, there's a star symbol which you recognize as ZIN of the Heavenly Host, one of the human gods (god human?) that come to visit the colony sometimes.

Hah... It's strange what you end up remembering. You have to wrack your brains about it.

You see Zin bow to the guards when he enters and he's very nice to your sisters, exchanging gifts with each other when he comes to visit. He talks a lot about himself like another person like a worker-sister and the proper worship of the three good gods and the Law and conversion and proper cleanliness. Your sisters listen well. He doesn't talk to you though. You just listened when you weren't working.

Next to it is an... adv, abdertisement. The text is small and you don't know a few of the words, but you can read it faster. It says,

    "Hey PAISANOS!
TRY our new HARDER and better DUNGEON CHEESE!
    This week: PARMIGIANO REGGIANO!
It's guaranteed to make your heart VERY WELL PLEASED!
You can't go WRONG! This stuff is the BOMB!
    Come to Floor 4C TODAY!!!

(This message was brought to you by José Juan.)"

    Neat.

Your eyes drift to the right colorful paper under a minty smelling herb, but you find the official-looking paper is way too complex for you to understand easily. Too many words that you don't know and pictures you can't make sense of. One looks like a pie. Mmm, pie.

You lick your mandibles and read the image to the left. It's the Red Goon! It seems to be saying,

    "REMINDERS:
Be mindful of those around you! Be vigilant! There exists disharmony!
Always stick with your buddy! Just remember that a friend is the best thing you can ever have. When life gets you down, a friend will be there to help!
Report any strange heavily armed individuals with a proper ID card! Those are ADVENTURERS!
Report any undead found outside the [Nec... you don't know this word.]
    HAVE FUN!
    DREDMOR NEEDS YOU!!!"

    Interesting, but not concerning.

To the left is a bunch of different papers but you're starting to struggle now. Too much reading! You much rather have your Controller figure it out for you, like he's doing right now.
    >>
    >>6479819
    [Ran out of space.]
You see two colorful things on the cheese poster. One red and one taller. They look like humans. Maybe they're like gray humans? Because they're colorful, you see. You don't know.

They have horns though and you start feeling suspicious. What if they're demonspawn..?

You stop thinking about that. That's a rude and very dangerous ac-accu-bad thought-speech about others.

    Anyway.

Gained [HEADACHE] - -1 to Intellectual challenges.

You're still in the middle of the hallway.

You can hear a lot of shuffling and squeaking and noises to the south. There are a lot of living monsters to the south of you.

Well, it's a door, that's for sure, but could there be something more?

You knock politely at the door.

It makes a pleasant wood sound when you do so.

    And nothing more.

    Okay.

You inspect the door. You're more used to working with rock and stone and tunnel-making but you've certainly seen doors before.

This one looks very well fitted for its frame, but not very important-looking. The metal-striped wood looks rather solid and robust but you could probably knock it down if you needed to. There's a metal handle for opening it.

You hear the sound of wings flapping and squeaking and shuffling behind the door. Despite there being multiple things on the other side, they still haven't opened it.
